Making a stone trough.."bampy" style.

At last I got round to trying to make a stone trough..or flower pot…or whatever it turns out to be..“bampy” style.
I learned a lot by doing it..first don´t be in a hurry…it takes a lot of preperation..(I planned to meet the OH in town at 11 am…I started making it around 9 am, next time I will leave a lot more time)…finding somewhere to make it where it will not be in the way for a couple of weeks, finding the right size cartons, putting the cartons together and strengthening them with sticky tape and plastic string, getting the cement, sand, peat, mixing bucket, trowel and water.. in the same place!.
The measurements…thickness of the cement mix is slightley smaller than bampy´s…mine being about 4- 6 cms thick in places, but I did add more cement than bampy says, one for the pot as the saying goes..so maybe that will make it just as strong…(toes crossed!), for the base I had quite a stiff mixture that I put in with the trowel but for the sides the mixture was more runny so that I could pour it in between the cartons…another lesson learnt….it shouldn´t have been as runny as I made it, another lesson was to weigh down the inside carton with stones, at first I didn´t and it just got higher as I poured the cement in for the sides, anyhow I got it finnished..in a hurry!!!…a very big fault!!!.
I have added 5 photo´s of the making of the “thing”, the 1st one is all the ingredients in one place, the 2nd one is the carton filled up to about half the height of the carton, the 3rd 4th ones shows that the mixture was too runny and the outer carton not strenghthened enough! and finally the 5th one…the whole thing covered up. I will now leave it for a couple of days..as bampy says and then remove the inner carton, then I will leave it about 10-14 days until the cement has cured…and then….either it falls to bits and I have a heap of rubbel…or I will be proud of my first attempt in making a “stone object” bampy style.
When the cement has cured I will add more photo´s of the finnished “project”.
Have a nice gardening easter…the weather is super fab here.

i hope it works.

Thanks for the replies. @ Terratoonie...3 parts cement, 2 parts builders sand and 1 part peat and just a couple more parts cement in the bucket full of mixture to make it a bit stronger.
@ Stickitoffee, I hope it works as well otherwise I´m left with a small heap of rubbel...hihi.. but then I can always grind it up with a sledge hammer and use it at my next attempt!!!.
@ Sanbaz, I need the luck because it was more luck than judgement making it.

.. and next attempt when you are given more time...
.. maybe when your OH goes on a longer shopping trip..
perhaps a week's retail therapy in New York ;o) Lol.

excellent idea TT ~ i would like a week off ~ can you organise trips away ~ for the OHs?

Sticki... you only get a week's shopping trip if your OH promises to make a trough similar to Rogi's amazing effort ;o)

other way round TT ~ i dont mind trying to make a trough if you can send OH on a holiday for a week?

good plan!

Good luck! That was actually my plan for Monday, make some Bampy-style slabs! I'm going to use some old cat litterpans as molds. I figure that will be simple enough and I can't possibly screw it up!

Hallo Lauram. I have also thought about making some slabs, but I thought that I would put the mixture in some bin liners, making the stuff fairly sloppy then it will just spread itself out...it could give some unusual shapes. Another thing I want to make is some lawn edging made out of empty cardboard tobacco drums...the ones that hold 200 gramms...as we both smoke we have 2 empty ones a week, they are about 12 cms high and about 9 cms in diameter so they will be fairly solid.
So I will now go down to the garden and finish off making the biotope that has been on the plans for a couple of weeks. Have a great easter sunday, even though it is only just after 7am here the thermometer is showing 15° C.

Hallo all. This afternoon I took the inner box out of the trough, it came out very easily, but it is very shallow...this is because I realy didn´t have enough time.., it won´t be any good for plants, but it could be a bird bath, or for putting a plant pot in it, or the other idea I have had is....last week I bought a small sun dial from an ebay shop, small and not very high, my idea is to make round pillar using the same method, about a foot high and cement the bottom of the pillar to the bottom side of the trough and the put the sun dial on top of the pillar. I will just have wait and see what happens when I take the outer carton off in a week or so´s time.

Rogi... with all those ideas, you could end up making about another 6 blogs about troughs ;o) Lol.

Hallo all. I have just added another photo of the trough (the last one in the series) that is more or less finished, it now needs to dry out properly before I move it to its final place...wherever that will be.
