yesterday this old man landed with a bump in my garden couldnt take off again and just sat very still most of the day, even when the rain started, i took him some bread and water which he slowly ate and drank, but nothing, i kept my eye on him till teatime but while all the other birds left he still sat alone, so after a few calls to council, rspca then finally as no-one gave a damn i called my vet which told be to bring him along, vets have to take in any wildlife injured or dead, or ill, so popped in a box wearing gloves because they carry alot of disease, he didnt seem to mind, felt so sorry for him, i know we get fed up with them eating everything but this is a living thing, we all feel pain and we all get old and tired

anyway i took him and left him with my vet who was very nice, guess he`s in birdy heaven now but i couldnt have left him to be attacked during the night by a cat,

We had a dove in a similar plight, which then got worse, so I phoned the RSPCA who said that if we took it a local vet, they would give me a reference number to give the vet.
This ensured the vet received payment which I thought was marvellous of them. (Glad I donate). The poor bird apparently had brain damage and had to be put to sleep.Maybe because you use your vet, he didn't charge.

at least we dont have to worry and leave them to be attacked, i thought about calling vet to see what happened but to be honest i dont want to know, i could see how old and ill he was anyway mad

We had a yound bird fall inbetween the house[next door]and our fence it could'nt get out and it's mother could'nt get in to feed and help. The noise the mother made was terrible so we took the large panel out and watch from afar.... the mother came and sat with her baby till it had the strength to fly ..Is'nt nature wonderful

Poor little pigeon .. it's so sad when this kind of thing happens in your garden , we had a young Chaffinch that did the same it sat on the lawn for ages until we picked it up I put it on a branch out of the way of cats , it was still alive then , next time we looked it was on the floor .. dead .. .
You did the right thing Sandra whatever happened it didn't suffer anymore ...

Well do Sandra i'd have done just the same as you.

I don't like to see animals injured. I have a koi pond in my garden, and when I or my wife see any that do not look well ,we do worry about it (the koi) and we do our best to see that it is treated to make it better. It does not always work out good. In our garden we also have a tall slim conifur and there is a pair of pigeons nesting there. This is their third season now. I think they have 2 or 3 broods every year. They say you never see a young pigeon,I saw one leaving the tree and making a few bumps and starts then he or she flew streight into my opened greenhouse, and stayed there until it got it's bearings, and flew out again. see you franktf4

hi dawn, thankyou, i just couldnt have slept knowing he was out there, poor thing

30 Sep, 2009

Well done Sandra, I've done the same in the past. Along with the occasional unfortunate in my garden my son was always bringing home injured or poorly wildlife! Well, you have to do your best for them and apart from that it's very distressing to just leave them isn't it?

30 Sep, 2009

yes your right lily,iv helped a few birds along the way, even mice lol, if you had seen me with the pigeon, stroking its head, with gloves mind,, and talking to him, im sure he knew i wasnt going to hurt him

30 Sep, 2009

Yes I think they do know when you're trying to help them. I had a tiny mouse in intensive care last weekend, I wasn't surprised it didn't make it but at least I tried. We have large windows which the birds are always flying into, usually they recover if I put them under the hosta! lol

30 Sep, 2009

aww normally just stunned lily lol poor things

30 Sep, 2009

I have read that sometimes they break their beaks with the impact and although they seem to recover and fly off, they then cannot feed and so they die. I prefer not to think about that, there's only so much you can do for them. :o(

You have a kind heart Sandra and done what was right, I know what you mean about they don't want to know, my son in law found a baby blackbird injured on the road, so he phoned the rspb, they said contact the pdsa, so he did they both said to him to put it back where you found it, near the nest, which there was no nest close to where he found it, they said nature or the mother will forefill what needs to be done.

30 Sep, 2009

Good for you San...you stopped him from suffering. Poor old pidge...he was a handsome chap.

30 Sep, 2009

awfull isnt it, i reared a young blackbird when i was at school cause mom never came back so i made a nest in outhouse where my dad use to have budgie cages, and fed him with worms chopped, bread and water, taught him to fly and eat for himself, he came back for a few years after to mate and nest in the garden, so even when i had left home mum use to see him about, so they can survive with human help morgana
thanx fluff

Yes they can, I know a lady who looks after all the injured birds in New Zealand and she nurses them back, one bird was set free yonks ago, he's come back nested near her garden with its young and one its young is poorly so it made it go to her door step so she took it in, so you see they don't forget and they know who cares.

30 Sep, 2009

what a kind lady :o)

30 Sep, 2009

Well done Sandra, A real star. :~))

There's a lady called Mrs Wren(!) nearby who takes in injured birds, I used to go to her a quite often when my son and cat were both bringing home casualties. She had a huge aviary of birds that she saved but were unable to be released. It just needs someone who is dedicated, a lot of people can't be bothered.

thankyou ian, we have to do these things dont we, well some wouldnt ;o(
lily she has the right name or does she call herself that,it does take dedication to do something like that, infact it would take all your time, she sounds like a very good person, very caring :o) i missed the bit you put about the birds beaks thats so sad lily and your right we cant think about it all to much to upsetting
