replanting baskets, pots

today as im having a relatively pain free day i decided to get something done in the garden, the sun is shinning here in blackpool and my baskets are now dead, so i popped into my local nursery in the village and got some pansys, violas and a couple of ivy, had a chat to the bloke there about his up and comming holiday before xmas rush, then came home to start, first i emptied the baskets, put my fuchsia and begonia tubers to one side and planted up the baskets, pansys and ivy, will look nice when they fill out
then i emptied my concrete planters, which i saved the fuchsia`s, put pansys, violas and some narcissus"pink charm"
i put the pancys and violas at each corner to leave room for the bulbs to come up in the middle, hope i did this right guys, wasnt sure if you could plant pansys over bulbs and didnt want to cramp them
then i cut back my fuchsia and repotted and watered, then put into growhouse to settle then when cold comes will put them into the shed to protect from frost and cold over winter, hope they survive,
after that i swept up my mess lol then put all my chairs away for winter and my bistro set off the deck, all looks a bit bare now, but at least i got some work done today, tired now so will sit and watch a movie this afternoon,:o)
since i wrote this blog i have now filled the centre gaps in planters with more viola, as barbara(spritz) said the bulbs will still find their way through, thanx barbara :o))

thanx barbara, i have some violas left so i could plant them i guess, mind you they are smaller so may get cramped my the bigger pansys, what do you think :o)

23 Sep, 2009
Good one Sandra you dont have to worry to much about the bulbs like Barbara said they find there own way up.Mind the pansys dont get eaten by the slugs. I already brought one lot within one evening they were gone. So now i use a few slug pellets.

Another great idea that I will now blatantly copy. Thanks San. ;~))
23 Sep, 2009
what more flowers in your veg patch Ian??
nice pots San. im enjoying all this tidying up. lots more to do tomoz...
23 Sep, 2009
I like your tubs and baskets . I always buy a little pot of ivy. You can separate it out and it's a good filler between plants in a container. They'll be colourful in spring when the bulbs flower too,
23 Sep, 2009
Ahhh Sandra, pots and tubs can go anywhere so perhaps the veggies are safe still, Lol. ;~))
23 Sep, 2009
You have been busy San......so a rest is well deserved!
Nice pics too. With regards to the fuschia plant, mine is still flowering so will I be okay for another week or so before replanting for winter or shall I cut it back now and be done for winter?
Probably pop it just inside conservatory to keep it warm through the frosts!!
23 Sep, 2009
I've just bought a small fuschia plant and repotted it into a bigger pot. What should I do with it over the winter?
23 Sep, 2009
Hi Digs!
You remember I said about digging that border over ready for Spring and you said don't waste time and money onnutrients and the like until after winter?
Well, after consideration, I'm going to go with 2 raised planters fro, Homebase as the ground is absolutely chocker with big roots from the leylandei and it will be too much hassle so the raised planters seem the better option.
Thanks for your advice though
23 Sep, 2009
Your welcome Dan, do you have to buy the ready made ones? They are really easy to make. Decking boards will be much cheaper and will look just as good finished! ! !
23 Sep, 2009
I'm going to do some homework first on the costings as the idea came from the ones at HB.
Will look in to it first as there's no rush just yet.
23 Sep, 2009
Good luck mate and if you do need any help or tips then let me know. :~))
23 Sep, 2009
cheers Ian. Off to bed now son. Work again in morning.....JOY!
G'nite skip!
23 Sep, 2009
Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite. Lol
24 Sep, 2009
cheers sandra, ian and Dan, sorry Dan went to bed, had quite alot of pain so went to bed about 9.30ish, al least i slept which was a change :o), my fuchsia had stopped flowering so thats why i cut it back, i still have a couple that i will leave out a while longer, its still quite mild out there, off to work now catch you all later :o))
almost missed you there hywel, thankyou and yes i love ivy to fill in and flow over the edges :o))
24 Sep, 2009
No need to apologise silly! When bed is calling and the body is aching, it's time to rest:0)
Thanks for that. Think I'll leave it another week then do the necessary! looking at it this morning, there are less on it now so not long to go.
Thanks San. Have a good day at work.
24 Sep, 2009
Poor Sandra. I hope you feel better today! Glad you were able to fill your planters - they'll be a great pleasure to you!
24 Sep, 2009
You WERE busy!! Try not to overdo it tho! Hope you're feeling better today! Its too easy to think you can do it all when you DO feel ok, innit? :~))

24 Sep, 2009
You have done well Sandra, bet you are pleased with yourself and the results, its is not easy is it digging out plants that have done so well for you through the summer months. I have been putting off tackling my patio pots but went out today and went mad buying lots of plants to get through the dark winter months, Yours will lOok so preTty with the pansies and Ivy and the bulbs in spring. will post a picture of my purchases later on..
24 Sep, 2009
Hee hee! I went cheese shopping on the way to the doc again!! So.............loads of plants! He burst out laughing when i walked into his office totally laden, & said "You better NOT be here about your back!"
24 Sep, 2009
thanx carole, yes it harder than you think getting the plants out of the summer pots, trying not to damage the fuchsia and begonia tubers, but repotted fuchsia so hope they survive, cant wait to see your winter pots to carole :o)
lol mari i bet he wasnt inpressed with that, what plants did you get, is the back ok?
24 Sep, 2009
I'll write them up once I've taken note of them all, but got 2 fuschia hanging baskets (still in flower) for £1.99 each!

24 Sep, 2009

24 Sep, 2009
Thanks Sandra, they look so good. I put my bulbs in pots last weekend and they do look very bare. Spritz has done similar pots too, that's why I love this site ..... such inspiration.
24 Sep, 2009
Its all your fault! I'm going to take cuttings of the ones that AREN'T still flowering, & see how they do!
As for the back, it was sore before I went out!!
24 Sep, 2009
keep the whole plant to mari, it should come back if you take it inside over winter, just pop it in the shed away from frost,. lol mari
your right dawn it does inspire us seeing things on here, so are you going to pop some pansys in them now :o)
24 Sep, 2009
Yep, and some ivy. Years ago, I always did winter hanging basking with yellow pansies and ivy but I sort of got out of the habit. I hadnt thought about setting over the top of bulbs though :-) Yes, I need to source some pansy's, are there any on offer anywhere at the moment.
I got a really big bag of daffodils bulbs from Lidl yesterday for £3.99 and the bulbs are huge.
24 Sep, 2009

24 Sep, 2009
Well done Sandra, you're very organised. I have just planted some Autumn /winter beddeing in front garden this morning but didn't feel up to doing pots as I've got a horrible cold!
You mentioned the garden centre and the xmas rush. Julie and I couldn't believe our eyes on 13th Sept when we visited a large garden centre called Summerhills nr Basildon and saw they had a huge Christmas stock display already, and people were looking and buyin it!! Totally ridiculous. The weather here is still gorgeous , summer like sunshine so the last thing I want to think about is cold damp December!!!!
26 Sep, 2009
thanx paul hope your cold gets better soon, ive been the same this week to :o(, its getting earlier than ever xmas goods in stores etc, even my baz came home from work and they have booked xmas party at work already, im like you dont want to even go there yet,pop some pics up when your feeling better of your planting ok :o) take care
26 Sep, 2009

27 Sep, 2009

27 Sep, 2009
Yes, exhausted still today Sandra. Went quite well on Saturday at Kessingland. He even had a few'groupies' asking for autographs and wanting photos taken with him.And the parties went well. He really is good at kid's parties(they love his wackiness!)
On this coming Friday I've got to take him to Bournemouth and he won't go on stage till 11.15 pm and so I won't get home till about 3/4am. I'm not sure how he'll get on. He's never done such a gig before, don't laugh it's a Gay Club!! Not sure if his act is quite right for that sought of venue. We'll see!!
28 Sep, 2009

28 Sep, 2009
lmao paul, oh im sure he wont heheh
28 Sep, 2009
Madperth, I got a bargain at Homebase last week as well. They had a big rack of dead and dying plants that had either not been watered or(even worse) watered too much. But I found a tray of white Cyclamen (6 in pack) for only £1.50. Only 2 of the plants were looking sickly( abit yellow on the leaves) but even they have picked up now.
28 Sep, 2009
that was a bargain paul, well done
28 Sep, 2009
Paul, :~)D~~~~~~~~
Nah, well done you! They try to sell them at full price here!!
28 Sep, 2009

Well done, Sandra! Lots to look forward to.
I don't think it matters too much, leaving a space - I don't, and the bulbs seem happy to find their own way up through the pansies etc. You could add a central plant, if you wanted to! A pansy or something else.
