I spied in the garden today....something beginning with S!

SPIDERS…..Arachniphobes this is your warning to look away now!

Heading up to the shed today – I glimpsed at what I thought was 2 decaying leaves caught up in a spider’s web on the trellis. As I walked closer a little breeze caught them. Much to my surprise there then followed a frenzy of hundered of tiny little spiders.

I wasn’t quite quick enough to capture the rapid deterioration of the gold colourd orbs.

The larger of the 2 moments after being disturbed

The movement of the spiders from above soon sent the warning below that sent them scarpering too

Before long the mass exodus began…..

Its at times like this when I wish I had a much better quality camera. Then again, if I had ran back into the house for it I would have missed the ensuing battle for pole position. What baffled me was how the all followed each other in an ascent up towards the top of the trellis. None went downwards or across – they all headed in the same direction.

As good a close up as I could get on my phone – to give you an idea of scale – the metal rod has a diameter of 7mm.

These stragglers managed to get themselves on the wrong path

They seemed to be playing a game of tag….

We’re coming to get you….

The main pack being closely followed by their siblings

Before I knew it the all the spiderlings where high up and scattered all over the little overhang under the shed roof. Too high up to get a shot. As I didn’t want to disturb them, I left them too it and decided that I would go into the shed later.

A few seconds later, I noticed that most of them had disappeared altogether, but a few started making their way back down towards their original resting place….

I went away to leave them to it for about 15 minutes – there they were all tucked back up into their tiny little ball.

Their network of webs – so much finer that the usual spiders webs you find around the garden.

I think these are baby Araneus diadematus, common garden spiders.
Thank you for reading.

Great blog, Scottish! :)))
I know that they're our friends and all that...and maybe if it had been one or two...but when that little lot started moving, I'd have been out of there like a racing snake!!!

Sitting here in the coservatory there was an annoying fly, in the corner of the window is a small spiders web, the fly got tangled a second later the tiniest spider ran out and wrapped this big fly
I think it must have bitten it as moments later all is quiet.........

Brilliant blog Angie. Who is your money on in the spiderolympics. I was not going to read this. I don't mind spiders but I still feel like they are crawling all over me. It is fascinating seeing them all like that and quick thinking to use your phone. I would not have a clue how to use the camera on mine.

Thanks Sheila....my phone is nearly always in my pocket. The camera on the phone is actually better than the close ups on the wee digital camera I have anyway! That's probably because I haven't bothered reading the instruction more likely :)
