Heptacodium Miconioides (Seven Son Tree)

I chose a shrub/small tree for my garden last year, which seemed full of promise. Something ‘different’ – late flowering, scented, peeling bark and the red calyx stays on after the leaves have dropped. It is attractive to butterflies and produces Pink/Purple Berries. Another feature is the dark green leaves take on a claret tinge in autumn.
I have the peeling bark and I have the leaves beginning to take on a ‘red’ colour. I’m under no doubt that it will NEVER attract butterflies this year!
However, it does have lots of buds on it’s branches and I would very much like to see its flowers and smell its scent. Without the flowers I’ll never get to see the red calyx nor the berries.
This is where I ask for your help :)…..
I’ve tried talking too it – thus far it hasn’t listened. I’ve looked up to the sky asking for divine intervention – that too has fell on deaf ears!! My sun dance was ignored (obviously) – what’s a girl too do?
What ever it is that YOU do in your garden – I ask, no PLEAD – please focus all your energy – share the love – send your vibes, please please please my plant needs your help :))
Thanks for sharing my light-hearted look at another 2012 disappointment :))

Oh dear Scottish, now you do know that patience is a virtue don`t you, also everything cometh to those who wait, good vibes winging your way as I write, could take a while as they are coming the long way round as the winds blowing the wrong way, lol.....

Sending good vibes - but they may take a while to reach you as their are a lot of witches to dodge tonight.

You know what ladies....I must have got some good vibes - I'm just back indoors - absolutely soaking wet - the first time ever I've spotted a hedgehog in the garden. I've put out some dog food and its busy munching away - what a racket it is making. Keep them coming :)))))

It's looking pretty healthy so far Scottish . . . I'm afraid things in my garden only perk up when I ignore them completely!

lol...nice one Scottish. If it's any help, it will have benefited from all the rain in terms of getting 'bedded in' and well rooted. Lets hope and 'vibe' for great things next year eh? It certainly looks lovely and healthy! I myself have just tentatively ordered the third Hamamelis (first for this garden though) I've tried to grow. The other two gave up the ghost. Like you, I'll be hoping, but like Sheilabub, I find that the harder I try the worse things get, so I'll not bother pampering it! :)) I'm going back to my old gardening ways....like it, buy it, dig a hole and water it in, walk away and leave well alone! :)

We'll do the rain dance for your tree - it's pouring down here lol :D
I hope at least some of the flowers will open for you. It must be a bit disappointing, and a long time to wait for next year ...
The bark and coloured leaves must look nice though :o)

Too bad I did not read this 'til after halloween or you could have invited the local guisers in to do a Fairy Ring Dance around it. When did you take the photograph? There looks to be lots of lovely flower buds on it. Seven Son Tree is an intriguing common name. Maybe Tt is right and you should be playing it some tracks from one of the popular shows.

Hi Sheila...good to see you on again.
Your guisers would have been welcome - they were very few and far between here - too many 'little ones' in the village now, the others are obviously too old to do guising!!
Still no signs of flowers - there are lots of buds - this is just one branch. They don't look like they have been affected by the frost but time will tell.
As for the name - I found a site last year with lots of info on this shrub/tree - but can't seem to find it. It is a member of the honeysuckle family, derived from China.
I noticed that Crocus has them on sale for £40 - think this only cost me £12.50 at you know where last year!!
