Went up home.

I have been looking in most days but not really had much to contribute of late. The garden is quietly getting over grown but there are plans to work this winter and spring.

Anyhow, I went up to Sunderland where I grew up. I still stay with my eldest brother who lives in the family home. There is a joy to the family home, it is 500yds from the beach.

The forecast wasn’t brilliant but the sunrise on Saturday seemed to be a golden opportunity to go down on the beach. So 7.15 I was up and walking down as the clouds started to take on a pinky hue.

My bit of the beach is an area called Seaburn, as there is a fresh water stream that empties out onto the beach. It is culverted now for the road etc.

It did allow the fresh water on the beach to reflect the sunrise.

This photo was taken looking directly out to sea. Back on the promenade the beach has rock pools, directly on the right, and is where Victoria did some of her sea anemone dissertation for her conservation degree.

Same area just 350 yds further along the curve of the sea wall and 6 hrs later at high tide. The lighthouse is on Roker Pier.

At low tide looking to the left you can see 2 miles of beach to the village of Whitburn and the rocks there, called Whitburn Steel. Another Sea anemone site!

This beach was where I spent many happy hours no matter what the weather or time of year. I miss it and love going up when ever I can. Of course seeing my 3 brothers is also important.

That was lovely for you Eileen, nice that you're still able to go 'home' . Nice for your brothers too.

I can understand why you'd spend all your spare time on the beach. I used to love going down the Gower (near where I grew up) and looking through rock pools etc on the different beaches, and I always went home with crabs, sponges, etc which I kept in a marine aquarium.

And I love the sea when it's rough, and all the tourists have gone home :) Many is the time I've got a soaking from waves crashing over the rocks ... and over me !

So that's how you got your avatar name - from a Burn (stream) that flows into the sea! very clever! :D

Glad you had a good time back in your family home with your brother! The sunrise picture is gorgeous!

Hywel, I just have to say..that is a quite beautiful description of a seaside childhood! Back in the days when children were allowed to explore. Everyone is so fearful now, of all kinds of danger. I am no different. Hardly let my 2 out of my sight as children, and now one has ‘escaped’ to Canada! (Karen rolls eyes at herself).

well I made sure my 2 got sandy/muddy/wet.grazed knees etc just like I had done. We also had a marine aquarium and I remember being woken up about 11.30pm to watch a hermit crab move shell. I'd have been about 6 or 7.
both of them still do enjoy being 'outside'.

Lovely blog / photos. Ty for sharing your home visit with us. I have never been to Sunderland, that is why blogs on this site are so important for me.

Eilee, your happiness on your visit back home shines through. I too have happy memories of a childhood by the sea and only recently found some very old black and white snapshots featuring my sister and I wearing our 'cossies' with our buckets and spades. Happy days ... :o))

Have you been watching 'Matt Bakers Travels with Mum and Dad' at all? I have really enjoyed seeing the places they have visited and doubt I shall ever see the North East of England.

Hi Shirley, I really miss the beach and all the lovely bits that i explored as a child and as a mum to my 2 girls. Both were on the beach [in their pram] aged 3 weeks.

I have seen some of the Matt Baker programme and they are on record for when there is nothing else I want to watch.
