Hmmmm! Ours haven't arrived yet, maybe today (hope, hope).
We intend to plant in pots. They will be large ones with the bulbs about halfway down. Like Sbg, the garden space isn't cleared yet and the ground is frozen anyway.

Glad you got your trilliums Sbg....what colour did you get?
11 Dec, 2009
I have order 4 different ones. white red yellow and pink. i will check on proper names and keep you posted.
thanks bulbaholic as i was wondering how deep to plant them. I am going to use 3lt pots and add extra leaf mould to the compost too. does that sound a sensible idea.

Sounds good, Sbg.
Our five packets came this morning :-)

Mmmmm sounds good.....:)

How many to each pot, please? I've got mine, too. :-))
11 Dec, 2009
Can I suggest you give each one their own pot.....saves a lot of root disturbance when you eventually bed them out...
11 Dec, 2009
Depends on the size of the pot, Spritz. I hope to find some quite large ones and put five in each. Give them an inch or so of space each. It will only be for the one season as I would expect to plant them out next summer.

Sorry, Alice, didn't see you there. Your suggestion is just as good as mine.

Thanks - I thought I'd plant each cultivar in a large pot, so 5 per large pot.
In gritty compost with leaf mould?? What do you think?
11 Dec, 2009
I will be using the compost described in my recent blog with added leaf mould, just for luck!
And I might yet just plant individually in one litre pots, but they will take up a lot of space.
Sorry to confuse, Spritz, but I finally make up my mind at the last minute!!!!

Right - miss out the grit, then. :-))) I shall have to pot them in 3 large pots for lack of space, but outside or under shelter once potted, please, B.?
11 Dec, 2009
I will certainly be keeping them in the potting shed to start with because we have some hard weather around for the next few days. After that I will try and put the pots outside as soon as possible but probably bring them under cover if(when) it freezes again. That is one of the advatages of pots!
These bulbs are probably feeling a bit tender at the moment, having been lifted from a nursery in the States just a few weeks ago and need a little extra tlc.

Good thinking - thanks Mr. MB. More coldframe shuffling coming on, I think. LOL.
11 Dec, 2009
this sounds good to me too. off to do them first thing in the morning.

Good luck with your trilliums :o)

Thanks, Hywel. First time for me AND Sbg, so we're excited about it! Moongrower told us about her friend who had a special offer on them. :-)))
12 Dec, 2009
I ended putting mine in 1 litre pots one per pot. used compost and leaf mould mix. they are now in the cold frame. I planted them about 1-2 " deep.
about half of them had 1/2" of leaves showing. did any of yours? they are bruied just under the surface but they felt rather soft. the rhizomes felt firm though.
fingers crossed for them.
12 Dec, 2009
Yes, some had a tiny leaf showing - I don't suppose it matters, though. I planted mine 5 to a pot. I hope that's OK!

i dont see why not spritz. I am anticipating have them in several places in the garden so it will be easy to plant out. I also promised you spare ones of mine too dont forget.
I ordered
T.grandiflorum [white], T. luteum [yellow], T. sessile [a deep red] and T catesbyi [pink i think].
12 Dec, 2009
I got the first three - but not catesbyi, Sbg!
12 Dec, 2009
from what i have found it hides its flowers under the leaves so its one to plant at the top of the shed border. so i will be able to see up the flower.
12 Dec, 2009
have a look at pictures of it. if you like it I will post you one before it takes root etc.
