West Wittering

When our family from Australia came over in June, they asked us to find somewhere to stay near a sandy beach on the south coast, not too far from Heathrow. Shirley tulip kindly recommended West Wittering, which is near Chichester. We rented a house with a garden (with swings and a trampoline) just ten minutes flat walk to the beach, and also booked a beach hut for all the paraphernalia which is needed for a 2-year old (Frankie)and a 5-year old (Chiara).
Here is a taste of our holiday, with photos taken by Steve (younger son who lives in Falmouth, Cornwall), and Gabriella (Gabbi, our daughter-in-law).

Grey weather – the sea was very shallow on this huge beach, so it was safer than it looks!

It was a beautiful beach, and although the weather was ‘mixed’ we had a lot of fun building sandcastles which the little ones knocked down. I think the highlight for them was riding on the paddle board.
We shared the cooking, and took turns trying the local pub, which served delicious food:
We had a great time, and as we said ‘goodbye’, the DownUnderlings thanked us and asked if we could do it again in 5 years time!

Thanks Paul. I took a bit of "poetic licence" as The Crown and Anchor is actually a couple of miles away, at Dell Quay!

Oh, that's why I didn't know of it then! There was a pub called the Lively Lady, virtually opposite the holiday village in Bracklesham Bay...I have to say, it didn't have the character of the crown and anchor. Looked to me like a 60's built place and really wasn't my cup of tea but we went in there a couple of times with the entertainment staff .well, it was their local and they went in there fr a meal occasionally.I remember once in particular after we'd watched their Panto when Graeme was one of the ugly sisters....how could I forget that?

So pleased you all enjoyed the holiday ... isn't that first photo just wonderful? Definitely one to frame!
Shame the weather wasn't warm and sunny all the time ... bet the beach hut came in handy! :o)
Paul, the Lively Lady pub closed down and was converted to an Italian restaurant :o(

What lovely photos and even better memories I bet! I had a holiday in Bracklesham Bay when I was eleven (I can't believe how many years ago that is) I love the south coast but have hardly been there since my family moved north in 1965. It looks as if the children loved it as well ?

Shirley - thanks - we're so grateful that you told us about this place!
Yes, I love that first photo . . . Steve walked down to the beach at 9pm when the others - jet-lagged - were in bed. He takes pics all over Cornwall, and I do frame some of them :)
Thanks very much Susanne, Sheila and Klahanie . . . yes, great memories to treasure.

Nice blog. Seems you all had a good time. You can can paddle out for miles at Wittering and the sea still only comes up to your knees, so great for children & no good for swimmers. Hope you manage to see them in Australia before they visit again as they will be so grown up in 5 years. I expect you see them on Skype though.

Thank you Feverfew. Yes, we do see them on Skype, but our next ration of cuddles, happily, will be in New Zealand all being well in 18 months time. That's the plan anyway!

London friends were fans of West Wittering so we made a special visit there and the fog rolled in! Looks so good in your photos we must pay another visit and keep our fingers crossed this time!

Thanks Eirlys . . . any beach is better in the sunshine, but with little children to amuse, our 'mixed' weather didn't matter too much. Good luck with your next visit!

Smashing. A lovely cheerful blog, Sheila.
It is a lovely beach down there....we used to go to nearby Bracklesham Bay and East Wittering very regularly as our eldest son worked as an entertainer at the South Downs holiday village in Bracklesham for nearly 6 years.
Never went in the Crown and Anchor, though!
