RHS Wisley September 2015 - Part 2

Following on from my earlier blog on the Plant Fair at Wisley … we discovered that Wisley is the second most visited paid entry garden in the UK, after the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew.
After a light lunch of jacket potato, served on a plastic tray with a plastic lid and plastic cutlery, not impressed with all the plastic, but the potato and filling was good, we moved on to the glasshouse.
In 2005 construction began on the Bicentary Glasshouse which covers three-quarters of an acre and overlooks a lake. It is divided into three main planting zones. They are Desert, Tropical and Temperate Climates. It was opened in 2007. The Root Zone was added at a later date.
The glass panels either side have the names engraved of some of the 1,700 RHS members who have donated £200 or more towards the funding of the Glasshouse.
I really enjoyed walking around … hope you will enjoy seeing the plants too.
I thought this was a Banana tree too … like many before me!
This pink Passiflora was glorious
Just look at the size of it cascading down!
Another attractive Passiflora but is named ‘Silly Cow’ … shame!
Orchids in differing colours and sizes
These are weeping subshrubs Russellia equisetiformis, known as Firecracker Plant and native to Mexico and Guatemala … beautiful.
Loved this Cupressus cashmeriana too
So many amazing plants!
The Dry Temperate Zone is warm by day but cool at night and resembles the deserts of the world.
Time to leave the Glasshouse to wander outdoors … it had become even cloudier than earlier
There is a teaching garden, designed by Cleve West, to encourage school groups, families and adults to get gardening.
We made our way to the rock garden and alpine meadow, created on a sloping site.
Pinus wallichiana ‘Nana’
Loved this Tulipa saxatilis …
and the cones on this Pinus parviflora ‘Negishi’ …
Just as we had climbed the slope and entered the Bonsai avenue, my camera battery chose to give up! Shame as I cannot show you the Bonsai, long borders or Rose garden, but I’m sure there will be another visit to RHS Wisley in the Spring. Thanks for reading … happy gardening.

brilliant love the glass houses, reminded me of my surprise 60th birthday treat with the two youngest to Kew we had a fantastic time there, made me want to visit Wisley will put it on my Wish list. :O)

Sorry not to have commented before, but I have not been able to log on to GoY, no idea why but finally made it today!
Thanks to everyone for reading and commenting, I know some of you have been there before and wonder if, like us, you noticed some changes, for the better I think! We will definitely return in the Spring, it should be a mass of colour from Daffodils and Tulips.

Really enjoyed this Shirley ! Thanks for sharing ! I can't imagine we would ever get round a place as big as this as it would be so difficult for Rick to walk so far .
Shame about the camera though ! Thats happened to me before.Its so maddening , isn't it !

Dawn, I am pleased you enjoyed seeing a small part of RHS Wisley ... :o)
Rose, I found it quite difficult to climb around the rockery, lots of benches to rest on though. I was sad when I realised the camera battery had given up, serves me right for taking so many photos at the Plant Fair, should have thought about it earlier!
