Spring Bulbs Keukenhof 2012

On this damp and miserable day, I am looking forward to the spring time, warmer weather and colour. I have already made my gardening resolutions, have decided on one or two places to visit this year – Sissinghurst and Great Dixter maybe. (There have to be heritage railways nearby, to keep OH happy!)
So now, I have resorted to looking at photos of places we have visited in the past.
2012. We had 3 days in Holland, arriving to watch the Noordwijk to Haarlem Flower float parade (42km) on the Saturday. Amsterdam on the Sunday and on the Monday
KEUKENHOF gardens. HOLLAND April 2012
(This garden is only open in spring so I was unable to tag the location)
The windmill in the gardens
You can see into the bulb fields, which are everywhere.
One of the main avenues.
If you arrive in the morning it is quite quiet. This was Monday morning.
Rivers of Muscari.
Mass blocks of the same variety – gives great impact.
Tulips – mixed plantings
Tulips – close-ups out doors
Hyacinths – lovely scent
Started to drizzle – take shelter in on of the display halls to see :-
Tulips
More Tulips
Different hall – Daffodills
I love this fountain, with the Magnolia flowers behind, it looks like little dove dancing.
This was my favourite statue in the gardens, unfortunately too big for my plot.
The orchid display house
I like Cymbidiums although the leaves are rather course, because they do well for me.
Started to get a bit busy near the restaurant and main avenues
So, go to an area with winding paths,
and a more cottage-y feel.
Over a bridge into an area with more naturalised planting.
Erythroniums, Dog’s Tooth Violets, my kind of plant.
Just time to listen to a tune or two on the organ, before it was back to the car, to return to the UK.
If you have the opportunity to go to this garden, it is apparently open from 20 March to 17 May 2015 and well worth a visit. The flower parade, which goes past Keukenhof on its 42 km journey is provisionally about 20th April. However, do not think that you will be able to get anywhere near the gardens even hours before, as the road will probably be completely clogged with traffic. We watched the parade in one of the towns on the Saturday and visited the gardens on the following monday.

What a refreshing and wonderful walk round the gardens. The Dutch certainly know a thing or two or three about bulbs don't they? I've got a big smile on my face now.

Gee, sorry about your flooding. I try not to work squadgy soil in winter, (actually anytime). The colour all came from the plantings, the 3 days in April were not exactly spring like.
Steragram, did you see the program on BBC about the demise of Tulip growing in the UK? Such a shame.

Took me back to the times when it was an annual treat to drive around the tulip fields near Spalding, they were an absolute picture, definitely a place to avoid when the parade was on though unless arriving very, very early ....
Thankyou for sharing Siris, it does look a smashing place for a visit, the photo's are lovely...

Must make a note to introduce a better shape for Muscari
which spreads so easily.

Thanks Lincslass, I have just seen a programme on the TV urging gardeners to grow Tulips in their gardens and the demise of the flower parade in Spalding, so soon I will put some pics of the Dutch parade up for you.Lol
Hi Diane, In my small garden the Muscari are becoming a nuisance, started in a small block, which looked good, but self seeders are extending to where they are not wanted.
Ps, bought a Crinum powellii rosea bulb at the garden shop, but it has yet to flower.

I'm watching those programmes as well Siris, I like all the gardening ones so skyplus them to watch at my leisure, today it was about losing the scented flowers and shrubs..
I'll look forward to seeing the parade...
