NO Cheating!

Like many of you, I really do not like snow – so to take my mind off it, and to give your brains a work-out, here’s a little quiz for you.

I’ve typed in the names of some spring flowering bulbs – but left out most of the letters. All you have to do is to fill the missing letters in! Easy?

You know me – to make it harder, the names are the latin ones.

This time, so as not to spoil it for anyone who wants to have a go – please PM me with your answers, and comment that you’ve tried the quiz.

Well, I gave you until Monday evening to work on it – that’s NOW, so here are the answers.

*1. Chionodoxa

2. Scilla

3. Narcissus

4. Tulipa

5. Fritillaria

6. Crocus

7. Galanthus

8. Muscari

9. Ipheion

10. Hyacinthus

I do grow all of these bulbs in my garden, and they’re not rare species at all. You could well grow them in yours, too!

Thank you to everyone who had a go – and very well done! So there you are – some pretty pictures of bulbs to look forward to – when all this white stuff has gone…*

Iris reticulata

yes i need at least till monday ~ thanks spritz. are we allowed to look things up?

18 Dec, 2010

Of course you can!

Ladybug, just think of a few spring flowers - and see if their names fit. Several of the latin names are actually the same as the common ones we use. :=))

18 Dec, 2010

Have sent you a PM, Spritz. I really should be wrapping Christmas presents .. . . . : o ))

18 Dec, 2010

Thanks, Shirley - I hope your brain got a little exercise. I'll just say that you did really well! ;-)))

18 Dec, 2010

anyway at least ive done the quiz ~ ive sent you a PM spritz!

18 Dec, 2010

I think Pamela is brilliant too Sticky...but Kara can really move too cant she...and I just adore Matt........

18 Dec, 2010

I've sent you a pm Spritz, though I got a bit stuck on no. 9.

18 Dec, 2010

gone off matt a bit, kara is incredible but i just admire pamela!
i think kara is the best dancer and im sure matt is very good but pamela as the all-rounder in achieving the most and being so happy and amazing as a role model!
i dont know anything about dancing and i cant do it at all ~ if you thought gavin was shy im 100x worse!

18 Dec, 2010

18 Dec, 2010

Too late at night for me B. I might try it tomorrow! Just wanted to say that the Irises are beautiful!

18 Dec, 2010

Thanks Spritz, I enjoyed doing your quiz, have to say I also nearly came unstuck on No 9 as well but hope I found it.........

19 Dec, 2010

No. 3 is Narcissus... that's all I can guess! Well I had a go...

19 Dec, 2010

It's 7 a.m. - I'll try later on when my brain wakes up ;o)

19 Dec, 2010

morning Hywel-- yes I need coffee.....

19 Dec, 2010

No hope for me in this quiz, no good at English spelling let alone latin names LoL, could copy names from gardening books but that's cheating, more coffee, no new brain for me

19 Dec, 2010

Morning Pam :o)

19 Dec, 2010

spritz said we could look things up jiffy!

19 Dec, 2010

I'm having a go got one ????????????

19 Dec, 2010

I know we are not allowed to cheat, but could someone PM me with the answers please, without Spritz knowing, then I can really impress her.

19 Dec, 2010

oh LL i shall get in trouble ~ AGAIN!!!
which one are you stuck on?

19 Dec, 2010

All of them. I won't tell Spritz. ;o)

19 Dec, 2010

try number 7 first ~ that was the easiest i thought if not the RHS book Garden Plants and Flowers through the year was very useful!!!

19 Dec, 2010

LOL, Littlelegs, trying to be teacher's pet ...........

19 Dec, 2010

Don't worry - I CAN read and I have spies out eveywhere, so I'll KNOW who's cheating! :-/

Of course you can use books! That's research, it doesn't count as cheating. LOL.

19 Dec, 2010

you found any yet LL?

19 Dec, 2010

LL I got stuck on one of them so I had a peep at Spritz`s photo`s, now thats not cheating it`s using ones iniative, mind you obviously it might be wrong still, lol.....

19 Dec, 2010

very clever lincslass

19 Dec, 2010

That's a crafty move all right - but I 'spose it's research...????

19 Dec, 2010

Have done it.....please do not put on any more before Christmas...OH wants me to get on with "things" lol✪✰✷

19 Dec, 2010

Dottydaisy, I know just what you mean! Before looking on GoY I wrapped Christmas presents, both here and at Mums, hand-delivered local cards (cheapskate that I am!) and did the ironing. Feeling virtuous enough to catch up on here now ... lol!

19 Dec, 2010

No, I won't be 'quizzing' any more before Christmas, Dd. I haven't finished wrapping presents, taking 'village' cards round, baking OR the housework, so I've plenty to do this end.

At least I'll keep busy. LOL.

Answers tomorrow evening, I think. :-))

19 Dec, 2010

I well remember checking back before an exam Spritz and I couldn`t find an answer in my books, so I took your hint and checked your garden again,......

19 Dec, 2010

The thing is, Spritz has too many things in her garden!!!

20 Dec, 2010

Oh dear - but sorry, I'm not removing them all just to leave the answers! Patience, patience. Anyway - you've got a few hours yet to wrack your brains. ;-)))

20 Dec, 2010

I hadnt thought of checking Spritz's plant profile. That is very close to being devious:o)
Will Miss allow it I wonder?

20 Dec, 2010

Well, if anyone had the stamina to wade through the loooonnnnggggg list, they deserve a medal, I think! LOL

20 Dec, 2010

I've edited the blog - and the answers are there for you to see! :-)

20 Dec, 2010

Yippee!!!!!! It was No 9 that nearly beat me Spritz, I couldn`t find the answer, thankyou for taking the time to do the quiz, I really enjoyed it..
Merry Christmas.....Sue xx.

20 Dec, 2010

Ahh, the answers... I gave away Narcissus, I'm afraid, after not reading the blog instructions properly! Good thing that was a pretty easy one ;o)

20 Dec, 2010

Well, Ipheion is a new one to me, but you learn something every day.... :-) Thanks, Spritz, for taking the time to make us not one quiz, not two quizzes, but THREE quizzes!! Must get the decorations out tomorrow, and wrap some presents.....

20 Dec, 2010

I agree, Beattie, number 9 was very difficult to find!

20 Dec, 2010

i didnt know ipheion ~ found it in a book
thanks spritz ~ i enjoyed that!

20 Dec, 2010

Thanks for the answers and the quiz itself.
Ipheion is the only one I haven't grown. I'll have to try next year.
I still have bulbs I haven't planted. I didn't get round to it and don't know when I will now :o(

21 Dec, 2010

put them in bowls or tubs hywel??

21 Dec, 2010

7 out of 10 not bad i think for me
failed on 4, 6, 9
4 salvia
6 oxalis
9 gentian

21 Dec, 2010

Never mind, Jiffy - you did well! Salvia and Gentian were rather wild guesses, I think - they aren't bulbs!
See - you learned something new!
;-)

21 Dec, 2010

Yes i have ,that's the best bit about this web site

21 Dec, 2010

thanks and a bonus of photos to go with the answers too. I thank you for the stamina in preparing all these lovely quizes

21 Dec, 2010

Stickitoffee - my compost is in the shed and I can't get to it. The snow is almost up to my knees. It's probably frozen solid anyway :o( lol

21 Dec, 2010

Well, I'm feeling pleased with myself on the answers.......

21 Dec, 2010

So you should, Shirley! :-)))

Thank you, Sbg. That's very kind. :-0))

Hywel - I do understand. I've just come back from plodging round the village in my wellies delivering Parish magazines - a half hour job normally - it took over 1.5 hours today!

21 Dec, 2010

now plodging is not a word I have heard for ages. We used for walking through puddles though not snow. Typical northeast word. always makes me smile.

21 Dec, 2010

Plodging :o) I'll have to remember that word. Never heard it before ....

21 Dec, 2010

it is sort of the sound it makes when wellies 'plodge' in the water.

21 Dec, 2010

Yes I guessed lol Lovely word :o)

21 Dec, 2010

i didn't know it was a NE word - I've used it all my life! lol.

21 Dec, 2010

perhaps its more universal than I thought. its lovely non the less.

22 Dec, 2010

It's very descriptive! lol.

23 Dec, 2010

I've just found this.....too late lol. All my work is done, don't feel like cooking ever again! But I did enjoy the eating...Have a Happy New Year One and all:-)))

31 Dec, 2010

i know what you mean BA ~ i love cooking but this year it seemed to go on forever ~ if i hadnt made a chart for each day and if i didnt work in a supermarket i would have had no chance!!!
worn out now ~ OH goes back to work on tuesday ~ im looking forward to a rest!!!

31 Dec, 2010

I am going to move the little garden table back to garage tomorrow, it seats 4 little'uns. My table only seats eight so it's been great for fitting them all in:-)
Spritz you must go to Somerset blog and do your bit, its days are truly numbered and surely one of the last comments must be yours (in rhyme preferably as it's panto season) :-)))

31 Dec, 2010

What, at this time of night? My brain is tired!

Happy New Year, all. xxx

31 Dec, 2010
