An up-date on 'The Great Wall'

The Clematis I planted against the wall were struggling to climb on the wires my husband fitted along the whole wall, so we decided that trellis panels would be needed.
They arrived on Saturday morning at 7. 15 a.m!!
We spent the whole day getting them fixed into the right postition, with my husband measuring and wielding his spirit level.
Putting them in the right position
My job was trellis-holder and then Clematis unscrambler – you know how they twine round themselves!
We kept having to dash indoors when the skies opened, but we got the job finished eventually.
There are five in all, two to the left of the arch, and three on the longer section.
I was pleased that the lattice pattern matches the sides of the rose arch, although they weren’t from the same company – it makes it all look ‘finished’ and the Clematis are all tied in properly now. The border is filling out nicely too – I can’t wait to see it in flower!

Yes, I agree.....nice job! Your wall looks so smart, and the panels just finish the job off perfectly. Can I ask B, what aspect do the Clems have? I'm only being noses, wondering if you now have the benefit of a cosy south facing wall to keep out the cold winds!

Great job...it looks very nice on such a handsome wall!
Now you can just sit back and wait for the flowers!!

Barbara your trellis panels are perfect just compliments the clems.
I am so looking forward to seeing all in bloom Barbara.
The walled garden project next yr is for climbers on our wall.
Be interesting to see yours grow.

a very satisfactory outcome, you and OH must be really pleased with the overal effect.

They look really smart if that,s the right word to use about the garden :o)

Every time I see that wall, I am full of admiration for the work that went in to it, one of the most beautiful walls I have ever seen, and I have seen a few......almost a shame to hide it!! sorry.......love the choice of trellis compliments it perfectly B.

Yes, that's exactly what we thought, Dd...hence the wires OH stretched the whole length of the wall. It didn't work for the Clems, so we had to think again. I actually prefer it with the trellis panels in spite of the doubts we had. I'm glad you all agree!
Yes, Karen, it faces south! :-))))

That is looking very good Spritz and will look even better once the clems romp away. Which clems have you chosen.

looks fab, the wall is gorgeous but the panels do give it a finished look and the extra plant height from climbers will be great. You have to post photos later when they are all in flower!

Stroller, I have Warsaw Nike, Mary Rose, Etoile Violette, Lasting Love and Semu. Lasting love decided it didn't appeciate being man-handled, and two of the shoots are drooping sadly. :-((
I will indeed take piccies!
15 May, 2013
Will look forward to the pics - my Warsaw Nike seems to be struggling this year but the Etoile Violette @ £1.39 from the supermarket and planted in April last year seems to be romping away.

Barbara, just when I think you will be running out of space soon in your garden for new planting, you go and suprise me with this wall! What a lovely feature and the trellis compliments it well. Ooooh, lucky to be South facing - my wall and trellis/Clems are North facing and get blown to bits sometimes.
Look forward to your pics of the Clems...

They won't be long! One of the roses has its first flower...photo today. :-)) I've really enjoyed planning and planting up a new border.

I do like the way it looks Barbara, I always like trellis, it adds a pattern when there is nothing climbing it .... and much of the wall will be hidden in summer anyway:-)
19 May, 2013
Not most of it, just some, Ba. The trellis panels are quite widely spaced. I wouldn't want to hide all Mark's craftsmanship! :-O
20 May, 2013
Wouldn't be much of a pattern then ...I didn't mean covered in trellis lol:-))
20 May, 2013
Errr...the climbers will all be on the trellises, Ba. Are we speaking the same language? lol.
21 May, 2013
Lol Barbara, I knew that:-) What I meant to say is that I like the look of trellis on a wall, but not if the whole wall is trellis ....see ...it makes perfect sense:-) Anyway enough of your garden, have a look at my lovely geums (most of which you do not have ha!) in my new blog:-))))
22 May, 2013
I was looking at the one I was given just now - it's quite pretty! I'll read your blog later. I'm just in taking a short break from the wind.
22 May, 2013
Terrible thing that, have you tried peppermint?:-)))
23 May, 2013
It doesn't work when it's gale force. ;-Z

:-))))

My new Clems suffered yesterday - another one has a bashed 'stem' which I'll have to cut out. :-((
25 May, 2013
I recently ordered two clems, Arctic Queen and Franziska Maria. I was very disappointed as each only had one stem and I thought they were too expensive as I expected more for the price. The company were apologetic and I was given a 'credit note' so now I've ordered 6 salvia carradonna. I hope the clems will look better next year as they should be beautiful. I'm amazed that companies with good reps send out inferior plants, still they've made goodnow, it's just so disappointing at the time:-)
25 May, 2013
Of course it was - but you did the right thing.

My illumination foxgloves have arrived from T&M, two are rubbish, minute, one may make it three should be ok. When will I learn? NEVER AGAIN! My pc is playing up, keeps saying I'm offline, but I'm not. Can't send or receive emails either or get web pages, can't connect ...suppose I'll have to get someone to look at it. I must have mucked it up somehow:-)
27 May, 2013
Not necessarily, Ba. It sounds like a fault.
Sorry about T&M - I'm afraid I feel the same about them, however tempting their offers may be. Those foxglove plugs were VERY expensive, too - I was tempted for about errr....two minutes. :-Z
27 May, 2013
Because my machine is playing up, I can't send pics of rubbish plants and ask for refund:-(
27 May, 2013
Have you phoned them? That would be the first step, if you could get a person rather than a machine!
27 May, 2013
My machine is working at last! I rang Virgin and someone took over my pc remotely .... spooky:-) I had to 'reset' Internet Explorer and that's working fine now. I must have done something when trying to 'fix' outlook express lol:-) I'll send T&M the pics now:-)
29 May, 2013
Moral - never try to fix things yourself. Our computer shop takes over our PC or my laptop if anything goes wrong - it does save a round trip of 20 miles, although I agree - it's spooky!
Good luck with T&M.
30 May, 2013
I'll let you know:-)
30 May, 2013
Yes, please do.
