Second opinions DO help!

I had some plants for Louise, so we arranged to meet this morning at the Garden Centre half-way between our homes. Unfortunately, the traffic was horrendous, and I arrived somewhat frazzled – a few minutes late! Luckily, Louise was unfazed, and we went off for a restorative coffee and to check our shopping lists!

How strange – we were both looking for Heucheras! I had decided that my sad wall trough needed changing – well, just look at it! A Heuchera would be great in there with some toning or contrasting pansies.

The Heuchera had to look good against the old stone wall which the trough is fastened to. That wasn’t too difficult – I found two, and Louise helped me to decide which one – H. ‘Jade Gloss’ with its marbled leaves, red on the back, was put on our trolley.

But which pansies? Orange? No – but Louise wanted a box for her lovely yellow corner bed. Mauve? Purple? Oooh! I love that colour! Red with silvery lines? No – I didn’t like the effect against the Heuchera. Then Louise pointed out the deep pinky-red ones – and turned a Heuchera leaf over to compare the colours. Sold!.

So here’s the trough replanted. That’s much better. Thanks, Louise!

Now to look for hers…but I think she’ll show you which ones she chose! They are lovely…

I wanted to change the planting in the lower of my two chimneys in the porch. You can see why!

Which Heuchera would look good there? It gets some sun, but not in the afternoon. Again. Louise came to the rescue – she suggested ‘Key Lime Pie’ which she has. We were lucky – there was a promotion on and the Garden Centre had a very wide choice of Heucheras – I found ‘Key Lime Pie’ and at home, I added a small Euonymus ‘Harlequin’ which I had bought a few weeks ago for this pot. There! much better! Thanks again, Louise! Good suggestion!

My next mission was to find a replacement small shrub for a very tatty Hebe, which I removed this week. I wanted an evergreen shrub, but something a little different. That was actually quite easy! I’d seen this Lophomyrtus ‘Little Star’ before – and loved its colours. I know it’s only hardy to – 5 degrees, but we are in the mild SouthWest of England, and maybe last winter’s extreme temperatures were a one-off? Let’s hope so, anyway!

But the space available was bigger than the shrub – another Heuchera to keep it company, Louise? What do you reckon? Well – that one does have pink flowers – they would ‘go’ very well with the Lophomyrtus leaf colour….right! Heuchera ‘Strawberry Candy’ it is, then!

I like the combination even when there aren’t any flowers on the Heuchera!

We checked our lists – sadly, Louise didn’t find two items she had on hers, but my other purchases were easy – seed trays and a pair of gardening gloves…no – not those leather ones! Wow! What a price! The ordinary ones will have to do…

I did get the gorgeous purple pansies, though… Who could resist these?

It was time to go – where did three hours go? What a lovely morning – and it was so helpful to have a second opinion!

Thanks Louise. You really helped !

You'd be very welcome to join us Alzheimer :)

23 Aug, 2009

Thank you, Kind Lady...but I fear this old Aberdonian is stuck in the mud...literally!!!

23 Aug, 2009

Sound like a great day out! Who'da thunk it? Me actually envying someone going round a GC!!! LOL!
I know what you mean about the mud, Alzheimer!!

23 Aug, 2009

Oh dear, poor you Alzheimer and Madperth :(
No mud here. Have you had lots of rain up there ?

23 Aug, 2009

It was lovely yesterdat till teatime, then it got cold & cloudy, but the rain started during the night (woke me up, & I was checking the taps!!) & its still going!!

23 Aug, 2009

Ditto here - and there haven't been many days without rain at some point recently. Actually - in fairness - the sky is beginning to lift a bit and as we say up here "there's not enough blue to patch a Highlander's breeks yet" !!
It's blowing a gale too...so definitely a day for the crosswords/ emails and blogs of course!

23 Aug, 2009

Isn't it pity we can't all have the nicer weather :(

23 Aug, 2009

It is indeed Louise!
It's just pouring here, & almost dark enough to need lights!!
Not too windy, but I'm decorating the living room, so not a wasted day!! Back to work tomorrow,(after 3 months off sick) but just a 5 hour shift & my boss is only letting me do 2 days, she's a good friend as well as my boss!

23 Aug, 2009

What a wonderful day you "girls" had at the GC. Yes it must be lovely to have a like minded friend to choose plants with instead of hubby trailing round and moaning ..and often blaming poor Fractal for the plants I buy (he works at our local GC and sometimes tips me off if there are some new choice plants in)...I am going to devote a corner of my new border to heucheras. Have a few already and there are some in tubs and baskets to transfer over in a few weeks time.

23 Aug, 2009

My boiler fitters broke my baby heuchera on friday, but I'm trying to save it!! :~((

23 Aug, 2009

ONLY three hours? lol. Gosh, what fun!

23 Aug, 2009

Thanks for sharing your shopping trip - you did very well. I love pansies too.

23 Aug, 2009

Well, Alice! You are lucky to have 'inside' knowledge of what's coming into the GC - and to have Fractal's expertise, too!

Heucheras are so useful, aren't they! It WAS fun...and the time went soooo fast. As for pansies - I'm a sucker for their pretty little faces - pity the birds tend to peck them. :-(

23 Aug, 2009

That's strange, i don't get pecked pansies.

23 Aug, 2009

They wouldn't dare Louise......lol...:))))

23 Aug, 2009

LOL

23 Aug, 2009

I'm a fan of hucheras too. There are so many (too many?) to choose from and the coloured leaves last much longer than any flower. Good blog Spritz

23 Aug, 2009

Thanks, Andrew! I shall be after a couple more when I cut back my Lysimachia ciliata, as I've just dicovered that two have been 'smothered' by this plant which, needless to say, has 'walked' again - all over the poor Heucheras!

23 Aug, 2009

gosh is it time to start winter planters already?
love the plant combos :o)

23 Aug, 2009

Time flies past doesn't it ?
They were selling Aquilegia there too Seaburngirl, that made me think of the spring !!!!!!!
Talk about wishing your life away !

23 Aug, 2009

At least they didn't have any Christmas stuff! :-)))))

23 Aug, 2009

LOL

23 Aug, 2009

spritz - do a Google search on a product called Hammeredge. It comes in small pieces of plastic you hammer into the ground to make an edge to your lawn. But I use it to form a barrier round plants that 'run' and so far, lysimachia 'Firecracker' hasn't found a way out and is kept in check

23 Aug, 2009

Thanks, Andrew - that sounds like a good idea! :-)

23 Aug, 2009

Isn't it nice to have helpful friends :o)
You chose some lovely plants.

23 Aug, 2009

PLEASE don't talk about C*******s...lets have a lovely Autumn first...:))))))))))))

23 Aug, 2009

Oh yes !! It's much too soon. ! Dec 24 th is early enough for me.

23 Aug, 2009

I absolutely agree! That's why I was delighted that they hadn't started on the 'forbidden subject' ...yet...

I'd like some summer before autumn, Alice! I haven't seen much sun yet. I live in hope!

23 Aug, 2009

What a lovely way to spend a day, can think of nothing better (well buying cakes in a little patisserie, comes almost close!!!) loved your choices, already a great fan of Heucheras........

24 Aug, 2009

Garden Centre and coffee...now thats what i call an outing.....lovely blog...great plants...:>)

24 Aug, 2009

Thanks. We enjoyed it! It's really good to go round looking at plants with someone who loves them as much as I do...no wonder it took three hours! :-))

24 Aug, 2009

glad you both enjoyed your morning, but, you know Spritz, it's very dangerous taking Louise shopping with you............. and Heuchera's well, I don't think there is an ugly one among them :D

25 Aug, 2009

Dangerous for Louise...or me, Grindle?? Neither of us bite...I think... ;-)

We were very restrained in our purchases, actually, and we didn't get thrown out for bad behaviour! LOL.

25 Aug, 2009

LOL
Grindle's probably right .... dangerous as in - i'll make you spend all your money lol.
I have a friend whose husband dreads us two going there together, he knows she'll come back broke !!!!!

I had to drive past another GC today so just nipped in ....... yup ....iI did and they were ..... Heucheras, Dianthus, Helianthemums, some new Lavenders called the 'Little Bee' range, I bought pink ones !
Also got some bulbs !

25 Aug, 2009

That's the ones I told you about, Louise! (the lavenders, I mean!)

25 Aug, 2009

Oh dear :(
A senior moment, i don't remember :((((

25 Aug, 2009

No probs! It was just one comment amongst lots...and lots....of chat! LOL.

25 Aug, 2009

By Heuchera or Crookera, I got here, finally!!!

Colours (and Heucheras) among my faves, ladies!!! Well Done"!. Have added a few more of those foodie-named heucheras to my wishlist, lol!

So glad you had a good day out - with a result! :-)

26 Aug, 2009

Thanks David :)

26 Aug, 2009

Yes, thanks David! :-) (duet!)

26 Aug, 2009

Hi Spritz, I've just found your blog. Did you slip it in while I wasn't looking? Lol. Sounds like you had a great morning out together and to have a good friend who also knows what she is talking about sounds like heaven. I think I might have come home skint, as they say, as the plants sound fantastic as well. Add good coffee on top of all that and there definitely wouldn't be a lot left in the coffers.
Enjoyed your blog and the photos are second to none, as usual. :~))
