Tree roots had become so competitive this tree fern I bought around 2002,was going very dry in even this the wettest winter ever. It had a fast start..but the tree won out the last 5 years or so.
This is said to be the tallest tree fern species in the world. For now I will settle for live to be replanted one day someplace else.
Actually,it was because of this very wet winter its still alive. I can see that one more dry winter season, and it would have croaked.

Sad in ground- even Alocasia are wilty.

Dug up and in pot.

In pot in the landscape.

Thanks Penny. A lot of years in that plant.

I watched an (old) gardening make over this afternoon and they had four or five really BIG tree ferns. Wondered how the owners would cope with them all over Winter. A neighbour has just one and it is covered with "stuff" all through the Winter months.

Yours looks nice and seems to be in a comparatively sheltered spot(?)

I bet it did Stan I hope it does well now. At least being in a pot you can move it about the garden.

I watched that program to Eirlys thought the same. I thought the program was a newish program .

One thing about Tree ferns Eirlys is that they are near sun loving it turns out. I should have planted it in a much more open area. Even full sun is not too much as long as its not that hot reflecting sunlight bouncing off a wall.
The large tree fern in the photo is Cyathea medullaris, what is without a doubt the large tree fern we can grow in the bay area. It becomes very palm like.
For me they are hardy, luckily enough.
