I'm closing in on the finish line of collecting.

Today I found myself doing the boring- sort of- or repotting some plants that are becoming nice specimen size. Its not as much fun as shopping for an all new plant or ordering and getting in the mail a nice present.
My little yards are near full. It just not there to plant something that gets sizeable. What I started with real determination around 2000 is very near the end. The very frost tender I tried have been killed off…whats left is a distilling of 16 years or so of many trips to nurserys, some gifted plants, and some things I might not be very happy with..but they grew for so long and so large..no point cutting them down since they are healthy. To think when I planted them I thought they were such great plants- Magnolia grandiflora and Yucca elephantipes…Ash tree. Roll eyes at them now.
I know I will add small things.Little jewels here and there. Its not the same though. Times and age. Especially me aging.

Paul,I can think of so many other tree's that if knew then would be magnificent show plants. Thats the curse of a small yard. You cant learn and add large plants as the years go by. The Ash? I was given it in 1979. Thats all the reason I needed to plant it. Its practical..blocks hot summer sun from half the driveway- where I park my car. Still,a group of tropical palms,or a Silk Floss tree..would have been stunning.
Even botanical garden every now and then, rip things up and start again...new displays.
I sometimes think..lol..eh,too late in the game.

I feel for you Stan as I spent last year ripping out plants that the previous owner had put In and still have about 3 trees I've got to cut down as they are just the wrong tree for this garden and grow just too big. Next one I've got to take out is a evergreen oak which I'm sad about but just the wrong sort of tree for this garden. I'm sure you will still enjoy tracking down those smaller treasures. :-).

2 days ago Jen I was at the botanical garden..and after perusing their plants for sale, bought none. Mostly natives.
That's where I'm at now. Years ago? I would have tried something.
I am though, putting lots more care into the potted plants I have. We got old together!

I alternate between thinking it's too late to plant anything that needs time to develop & oh, what the hell, I'll plant it anyway, lol. As for ripping anything big out - well yes it is too late for that!

Well,I myself was not sure I would even make it this far in age not that long ago. I also thought I might move. So,I had kept plants in pots I thought I might take "In the move".
No more of that!
Now,I hope that what I plant looks good very soon-lol.

Can't say I have ever been keen on Yucca, either Stan but we have all planted plants that we aren't so keen on when they get big and in small gardens/yards, space is at a premium.
