Can't give a like to this one Stan - how awful!

The weather seems to be all over the place does nt it I hope a good watering brings them back Stan if your not on restrictions as I read on a local football site yesterday California still has water restrictions I would use ice cubes ? its sad to see them like this when they were doing so well.

Hope you get some relief at the waters edge.

They revised it again. 108F and that's 42C. Today is hot..but not that hot.
The only downer is..tropicals are not going to grow all that much in four days-lol. Its the long term average.

That would be hottish here Stan lol just a shame its not good for your tropical plants perhaps the weather might be good eventually but it is weired weather even here.

I know this heat wave here in California has been relentless! UGH!!!

Last night here in San Diego the temps stayed above 90ºF (32ºC) all night (the ac couldn't keep the house cool) with high humidity...then at 5:00 am the clouds from Tropical Storm Lidia came in, then it cooled down a little bit with even more humidity. Tonight it's a little more tolerable. It's been very hot here for over a week. We had some rain today. Yay!

My plants looked like this yesterday and the last four days. I've been having to water twice a day.

Try surrounding them with crunched up newspaper Stan
it should retain the moisture around the roots and save them.

I did buy some mulch and put it around the ones who are first to wilt Diane. It doesnt really go far as I thought those bags could cover. Helped a little.
Andy- I heard that. San Diego had its hottest low ever 85f.

We are now in the fourth morning of 65-74f lows. 108 was hottest day in my life..by plenty. The air felt flammable.
Cactus and succulents- and Mango- loved it. I never thought the day would come that I could give them a week of tropical heat.

I think I posted on one of my pics that San Diego recorded temps of 90ºF (32ºC) or higher from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m Sunday morning. It is the hottest temps ever recorded during the early morning hours, according to the weathermen. I know the heat index here where I live stayed at 95ºF (35ºC) degrees the whole time, also. It was extremely oppressive!!! I'm so glad we're back to lows of 70ºF (21ºC). The highs will be in the mid-80's (30ºC) for the rest of this week. That's more tolerable. Yay! :>))

I'm sorry I didn't ask: Did your plants perk back up?

My Mammy Croton was so wilted in the heat it's now starting to loose leaves, again! This is even after watering early Saturday morning and Saturday evening. I think it was 104ºF (40ºC) here on Saturday.

What must the ocean water temps be? It's scary that the heat feeds the storm systems. Even the Atlantic Ocean surface temps are warm.
I agree with Steragram...it's hard to give a like to temps like that...but thanks for telling us about it...for that I "like".

The Pacific Ocean temp here in San Diego is 75ºF (24ºC), so, it's not exceptionally warm like a few years ago during the strong El Niño when it was a steady 80ºF (27ºC) in Sept. There's a weak El Niño developing this year. This is according to the information I read.

It took a couple of days for the Senecio-Roldana/petasitis to recover. Was not overnight like I would have thought.
The plants do ok...nothing fried. I watered just enough to get them through.
It was a warm May,June,July here..then the first 3 weeks of August was very cool. Its made up for that since!

Im not sure what the Ocean temps are exactly since we do have the Alaskan current that runs off of California every day all year..but it might have touched 60f by now. The bay is much warmer. It might have some influence on the warm nights we are having this whole week. I dont remember week long nights of near 70f or 23C as we have been having,happening before.

I just saw the opens waters off the peninsula it's an amazing 66ºF (19ºC). I got the information from NOAA. Some other areas are in the low-to-mid 60's. Redwood City has a water temp of 76ºF (24ºC). That's pretty darn warm!

It can take a while for some plants to show symptoms of heat-stress or even burning. I'm noticing a little more damage on some of my plants today. Luckily, most plants are fine.

That is pretty unusual for the SF Bay Area to see such a prolonged period of warm nights; however, the weather is changing, and overall getting warmer.

Right now,our average low is 70F. Now even considering it will cool off.. I bet that old record ave of 55f for September will also be smashed Andy. We are going to finish well over 60f I'm sure of that.

That's really good for the tropicals. It's very warm here again. Yesterday, it was perfect!

Despite a short cool off,(I'm enjoying 73f far more nowadays!) the lows are still in the 60's. The average has only dipped to 69f.
Strange to not be hot and yet have mid- upper 60's lows. Historical is 55f this time of year.

It's been really warm and very, very humid here. The lows have been around 70 degrees for the last 4 days. The daytime highs here in the mid-to-upper 80's. It feels so much hotter with the very high humidity. The dew point as I write this comment is around 70 degrees and some thunder showers are just to the south of San Diego at 9:00 p.m. There's a lot of severe thunderstorms in eastern San Diego County.

That's here on Tuesday and Wednesday with the TS..but its going to really cool things off to low 70's..and if accuweather is right,a week after that back to 80's.

I was looking at your old post Andy,on PB of Mangoes in National City and surroundings. Those tree's got huge on moderate summer temps. N.C. as I looked up..is like here 10 months of the year..summers pretty much the same.
The much warmer 2 months of winter are the game changer I guess. NO setbacks.

I don't have a post of mangoes in National City. All the pics are from San Diego. There's a lot of mango trees driving south. I've seen some off the freeway.

Those neighborhoods south-east of downtown San Diego for some reason get at least 10 degrees hotter than downtown. Not sure what causes this phenomenon. I know it's an excellent micro-climate for tropicals, though.

The lows in summer in these neighborhoods are in the upper 60's and low 70's. There's actually a huge difference in temps compared to Northern California.

I do need to find the big 50 ft mango I discovered by accident in late February of 2016 (when it was in full flowering). I could really kick myself for not getting pics of one of the best mango-flowering ever in San Diego (it was the hottest and driest February on record 2016).

If you see a Manila Mango..try to post that. I'm not sure what they look like over 20' or so. Most Mango in Ca photos are of the various round Kiett or Atkins. Those tree's have very heavy rounded canopys.
One Manila photo I saw in Veracruz Mexico, was narrow - but tall. Like 3 or 4 storys tall and those small yellow fruit on that big Mango looked like Christmas tree lights.

I don't know if I've ever seen a Manila mango larger than 20' tall here. I can only id them when they have fruit. There's so many varieties which grow in San Diego. I know there must be several large Manila mango trees here, though. It's the most commonly sold mango at Lowe's, Home Depot and the local nurseries. However, I've seen several others like Kent, Keitt, Nam Doc Mai, Timotayo, Valencia Pride, Haden, several others. People do grow them from seed, also.

I met this lady recently who planted a small 5' tall mango tree three years ago, it's already 18' tall and very bushy according the pics. It was loaded with mangoes. Not sure what variety it was, though. I have seen mango trees grow extremely fast here in my neighborhood.

I pass a little grove of mango trees going to work almost every day. The mango trees were planted last summer as maybe 5' size trees, they must be over 8' tall now.
