West Wales flood photos

Well, against all common sense we went down to Newgale yesterday to view the damage. It was blowing a gale and hailing hard so the photos aren’t very bright!
The camera was in a plastic bag all except for the lens!
I wish I’d remembered to close the back vent on my long mac – didn’t realise where I’d got wet until the cold wind found the wet patch a bit higher up than was comfortable…

This, sadly, is the main road to St David’s.

A closer look – the shingle is supposed to be a sea wall but I suppose we all give in under pressure sometimes! The cream building is the Duke of Edinburgh pub, where the landlady was waist deep in water. The lake on the right of the picture is the campsite where Snoopy once had a holiday.

Another view of the campsite – inviting isn’t it? You wouldn’t think this is one of the big surfing and “boys toys” beaches in West Wales! Nobody surfing today (!), though often there are a few out even in mid winter.

This is a view of the carpark. The bollards are about three feet high.

Another shot of the carpark and the back lane to Nolton Haven – I wondeer why we decided against going that way home…

You were very brave Steragram and glad you returned safe and sound.
It's not till you see close is like these that we fully understand how bad things are. It's heartbreaking to see and read of the devastating effects these storms have on folks lives.
Thanks for showing us these pictures.

wow Stera...the things we put ourselves through to report for GOY...hope you have dried out now...
but it was worth it the photos are brill...hopefully it will start to drain over the weekend. Its amazing how strong the wind and tide were.

All dry now thankyou, after a change of intimate garments...

Given a like for the photo's but its heartbreaking really seeing and reading all the reports and how many peoples homes and livelihoods are suffering.
You are a bit naughty you know, we don't want any reports from the danger areas my girl......

Knowing the landscape must have helped. Thanks for
going.

these are unbelievable the power of the sea and wind to lift that amount of shale, but tell me stera has that campsite altered over the years is it bigger now than it was when we stopped there maybe 30 years ago the site was a bit basic then but we did go with the kids and enjoyed it several summers in the water on an old tractor tube big back wheel one, were you living in that area then<or not old enough to remember>:):):)

You have caught it really well on camera,Sue..but it is so sad to see all the damage the storms have wreaked on your coastline..I think most of us will have seen it on the TV news,or heard it on the radio..so glad to hear your nether regions are now dry..you need a zip sewing into your mac,or some other means to keep you sea spray, and hailstone free ! :o)x

Now Lincs, we went when the tide was well on the way out so there was no danger.

Well Snoopy, we only came here 7 years ago (but I'm afraid I would have been well easily old enough to remember it if I'd seen it when you did....) so I don't know how big it was then. At the height of August most of the field in the third pic is in use, even sometimes a couple of teepees on the hill at the end. Its still basic, just a toilet block and I suppose there'll be some showers round the back of the surf shop. Its all kayaks, surf boards and kite surfing these days - not a tractor tyre in sight. Times change. They do rope off the area nearest the road in wet weather as it tends to turn into a lake with heavy rain.
Sandra there is a fastening on the vent, I just never thought to use it...we learn by our mistakes.

Sandra I'm supposed to be going to St D's on Saturday but I think I'll give it a miss.

Diane, yes, we knew we'd be safe on the hill even if not at sea level.

Hi Sue, thank you for showing these, where we are it's hard to imagine being flooded like that, all we see is run off from the hills, and it has to be pretty wet for that to happen, Derek.

Mercifully we live four miles inland and well up a hill so the worst we get at home is big puddles along the lanes.I keep hoping that splashing through them will clean the car but no luck so far! Where are you in Cheshire? I used to work in Nantwich at one time.

Thanks for the photos Stera. All those stones that have been moved about! A friend has been to Hamburg and Whitehaven on corporate laundry business(. Cruise ship and hotel) the last few days, he said this morning, on a visit, that he saw no flooding in hundreds of miles of driving!!!! Hardly believable. Thank goodness you live high up and away from the coast

Hi Sue, glad you're safe from the floods, we're just on the moors outside Stalybridge, {if you google Harridge ave Stalybridge, you can see our house, with our old car parked on the drive outside the garage} you only get a glimpse of the garden at the back though, it's the first house on the left looking down the avenue, actually it's the only house on the avenue with a garage, so you can't go wrong, and wikipedia gives quite a lot of information about Stalybridge, Derek.

Not sure I found the right one - couldn't see a car or a garage for certain. is it the house diagonally sited at the corner or the next one? Both gardens look all grass on the satellite pic.

Your' not too far from Bloomer then, and our son lives further north in Dobcross, where I'm told there's a nice garden centre though i haven't been - don't go up there much as its such a long way. I was trying to think of hills in Cheshire, but you're only just in it!

My grandma came from the Yorks Lancs border so i guess my roots are round there.

It must have been frightening there with all that flood water. Your photos give a good insight as to what conditions are like in many places these days.
Keep safe !
I'm wondering what floods are near here, but not brave enough to go and find out :o(

Hi Sue, it sounds as if you needed to go further up the avenue, it's neither of those, try looking for number 42, it's right at the end, the car they used had to turn around and go back down the avenue, so our house is first on the left going down, { the front garden is all crazy paving, because of my wife's disability}, surrounded by privet, Derek.

Got it, I was looking at the wrong end! Looking at the aerial view and and your photos its hard to see where you put them all. Do you have a woodlandy place at the end for your cyclamen?

10 Jan, 2014

Hi Sue, that woodlandy bit is to the side and doesn't belong to me, although all the tree's are ash that have self seeded from my garden, the land used to belong to the youth club which closed down years ago, and now nobody seems to take any responsibility for the land.
I haven't got any cyclamen at the moment, but I keep thinking of growing some from seed, as I have a few shady areas, but the price of Cyclamen plants is a bit high for the numbers I would need, hence the seed idea, I'll get round to it 1 day, lol, Derek.

11 Jan, 2014

I realised after the cyclamen comment that it was Bjs I was thinking about - sorry about that! I did grow some Coum from seed some years ago and they were easy. If mine have seeded I'll get back to you.

11 Jan, 2014

Hi Sue, thank you, Derek.

11 Jan, 2014

It is so odd isn't it. All this rain and I bet it will be too dry in the summer.

13 Jan, 2014

Hi Linda, if only, Derek.

13 Jan, 2014

What's worrying isn't just the spread of water - the ripples, showing either the force of the current or the wind pushing it further ...

6 Feb, 2014

It was just the wind Fran. There was another flood today at high tide but not as serious and it soon receded again. It didnd't knock the pebbles down this time!

8 Feb, 2014

small mercies ...
