Out of Action!

Oh dear, guess how i spend Easter Satuday afternoon? In A&E, alas.
One minute I was coming down a few steps out of the veg shop and the next I was sitting on the road (no pavement at that point!) and couldn’t get up again. I heard a nasty ping from my ankle. Anyway a lady came hurrying across the road and helped OK to get me off the road and sitting on the steps. The amazing thing was that the lady’s husband was a doctor who appeared shortly afterwards, examined the foot and advised me to go down the the hospital!
We had planned to go along to a local perennials nursery and have lunch there. OH seemed so disappointed at the idea of missing lunch I said OK then we’ll do that first, so with a lot of help I was got into the car, out of the car and hauled into the cafe where I sat with the foot propped up on a chair. They kindly lent me a broom to use as a crutch to get to the loo and then to the car again before driving 16 miles to the hospital where we spent a happy 5 hours mostly doing nothing but very glad we had had lunch!! (The damage turned out to be a damaged ligament – not as painful as a fracture but I’m told it takes a lot longer to heal)

It was very frustrating not to be able to go round the nursery after all but with the best will in the world I just couldn’t make it.

So now I am spending my time in a recliner with my foot in a huge stiff black boot, worrying about my seedlings and reading until my eyes sting. And hoping the buds on my new clem don’t open until I can get down the garden!

Oh Stera what are you like, that sounds quite nasty and spending all that time in A & E is an experience you could have done without, I really feel for you as I know how bad my knee was last year, I also know how we wind ourselves up fretting about not being able to care for our gardens, I hope its not too painful for you, rest and relaxation is order of the day for a while, take care and hoping that you're soon back on both feet.....

Hi Stera ... hoping your foot heals soon !

23 Apr, 2014

Oh dear ... I'm sorry to hear of your fall
:((( I hope you're not in too much pain, and that it will heal soon for you.

23 Apr, 2014

Thanks everyone! You've cheered me up.

Yes Sue I remember your knee - hope that's all well again now.

Hywel, Luckily I'm not having much pain as long as I don't put any weight on it but not being able to trot off and look at the plants is very frustrating. There's a dicentra that's better than its been before and I have to look at it through my monocular!

Hello TT, thanks for the good wishes.

Sticky buns sound like a great idea Snoop and I have some simnel cake left too...Poor OH is being send to open and shut ventilators, carry plants out for hardening off and bring them in again, hang out the washing - he's just not used to it! (xx to you too!!)

Oouch....
I do sympathise, hope you are mobile soon x

23 Apr, 2014

Oh Stera that is so unfortunate. take it easy and make sure you do rest it properly. Hopefully OH will be waiting on you

23 Apr, 2014

Sounds like a sore one Stera! I hope you listen to Drs orders and don't do too much too soon.
I'd be expecting OH to be running around after you since you so kindly went for lunch before A&E.
Get well soon x

Oh dear indeed,Sue..so sorry to hear you are laid up for a while..and at this time of year too, when you are wanting to do things outside..That big boot will give you some support at least, however cumbersome it is..My sister in law found ways and means of getting around with hers recently, and learned to hop quite well with a crutch....maybe you will, when you get used to it..I almost joined you yesterday,as I tripped over the high pavement they have at the bus stop,to assist wheelchair access and prams..Luckily only a bruise on one knee..plus a soggy wet patch on my jeans, owing to the heavy rain..we could have had matching boots ! Lol..I hope you recover soon, take care ..x

Hi Sue, sorry to hear this, I hope it heals quickly or you, but make the most of it, have your OH waiting on you hand and FOOT, for as long as you can, Derek.

23 Apr, 2014

Oh Stera poor you, maybe this period of time will do you good and if you have a laptop/ipad you could take a peek into the nurseries and gardens and plan your summer flowers all from your arm chair! Take care now and get well soon. x

Hope it gets better soon Stera, I would hate that being immobile, hope you have some good books you can read whilst sitting with your foot up. :O)Get better soon :O)

24 Apr, 2014

I'm quite overwhelmed by all your lovely messages. Yes Olive, I am hating being immobile and have just about read myself to a standstill!
Now Sandra there's no need to try to keep up with the Joneses! What a relief that you didn't do any damage, i don't recommend it.
GrandmaG, I'm being a bit naughty and hobbling into the garden now and again - I daren't look at any more catalogues!
Good thinking Derek - maybe you could tip him the wink?
thanks Pam, SBG and Scottish!
No Hywel, I've not had much pain at all as long as I don't do much - the boot is very effective.

And hurray, today I was very bad and hobbled up the garden without a stick! Just had to make sure everything was behaving itself.
Needed a good rest afterwards though.

25 Apr, 2014

don't over do it and undo all the good you've done so far!

25 Apr, 2014

You sound just like OH....but I know you're right.

26 Apr, 2014

LOL, Naughty Naughty, I sneaked out every chance I got and as to the crutches I got myself in a right tizz with them even before I left the hospital, the physio chappie was laughing at me and said in his opinion I was a danger to myself so allowed me out without them, I did use a stick at first so as I could get into my garden and it helped on the stairs.
I think that as long as you only put your weight on it for a few mins at a time and be careful Stera, you'll be ok, the danger is the fact that its not painful which is obviously good for you but its still weak and you could overdo it, have to say it does help with your frame of mind to get out a bit even if its only into the garden.....

26 Apr, 2014

I'm fine today with the big boot on - not so sure what will happen when it comes off next week though, that's when I'll really have to be careful. Wish I'd seen you with those crutches! Horrible East wind and lots of showers today, so there was no temptation to go gardening...

26 Apr, 2014

Sorry to hear about your accident, Steragram! :-(( But I'm also glad that you are making a good recovery! :-)) Be very careful when you're no longer wearing the boot as your ankle will still be rather weak & you don't want to over do it & spend at least six weeks in absolute rest!

27 Apr, 2014

Oh Stera what are you like. That sounds really painful. Hope OH is still waiting on you hand and foot. You definately deserve it.

Take care of yourself, try not to run before you can walk (as the saying goes). Hope your back to full speed soon.

27 Apr, 2014

Well, got permission to take the boot off "when I feel ready" - but as you say folks, it would be awful to set it back when its doing so well. Its so easy to forget to be careful when you're intent on where you're going. Still, I managed to pot on some leeks today that were too crowded, and pulled out some bittercress that I could reach without treading on the beds (got some mud on the fancy boot but who cares...) I might take it off for an hour round the house and see how it goes.

28 Apr, 2014

Stera, have just read your news and really sorry you have been laid up for sometime. So frustrating not to be out there! Fortunately sounds as though things are progressing well now. What with my bad fall that I mentioned (luckily nowhere as bad as your damage) and other friends I've heard have suffered similar trip-ups recently - sounds really strange!
Take care, Lin

2 May, 2014

Thanks Linmar - I'm down to an elastic bandage thing now but being a bit daft and spending too much time in the garden - well you do don't you?

2 May, 2014

How are you a week later? Have you been looking after yourself? I hope so! :-))

8 May, 2014

Hope that you have fully recovered by now Steragram.

8 May, 2014

I knew I would do it - spent too much time in the garden and set myself back rather - stupid I know. So am back being very careful. I can't believe how kind you all are - thank you Balcony and Feverfew, its fantastic to feel remembered!

10 May, 2014

Oops Sterra. Take care of yourself and try not to overdo it. I know it must be really frustrating not being able to get out and do the things you want to.

10 May, 2014

Hurray - much better today and got my pots sorted - well most of the anyway. (Walking at quarter speed!)

16 May, 2014

Glad your on the mend, now don't overdo it again will you. The pots will still be there tomorrow (same as mine are lol)

17 May, 2014

Well I've finished the pots, hurray. Pushed my luck again but stopped just in time!

17 May, 2014

Good going on the pots. Glad you stopped in time mind. Take it easy for a bit now and heal.

I was going to plant my sweetpeas in a big patio pot today, but since I've had to work (and will be tomorrow) I've not had much chance. Not sure I've got enough compost either lol.

17 May, 2014

It all comes done in the fullness of time as long as we don't give up!

23 May, 2014

It sure does. I managed to get my sweet peas planted on Tuesday. They look better than my last attempt lol, fingers crossed they flower well.

How are you now?

23 May, 2014

Getting there thanks - two forward and one back!

24 May, 2014

Glad to hear that stera. Hope your back to full speed soon.

25 May, 2014

Steragram, how are you getting on now? It's been a while since you last said anything about yourself. Hope that means you are up & "running" at least pottering around your garden! LOL!

28 May, 2014

Not running but at last walking normally as long as I don't overdo it. Certainly pottering - I got a heap of pots washed today and am feeling very virtuous, its such a put offable job I always leave it far too long and end up with piles of the things. I managed to do some tai chi again too after a long break, which was nice. The other foot has grumbled a bit about the extra work its been doing , as that one was weak to start with - who'd get old??? Thank you for asking Balcony - much appreciated.

28 May, 2014

Glad to hear your back on two feet (allbeit carefully). Sounds like a job well done on the pots. I've got loads I need to clean. Job for another day I think.

30 May, 2014

Cheers Sam :)
