Tiptoe through the snowdrops

Yesterday was a little dull but mild enough to go and find some snowdrops. These are in Worcestershire at a house called ‘Dial Park’ which opens especially for the snowdrops. They had quite a variety; I like this setting:
I think these are fairly unusual ~ certainly more exotic than any I have:
These remind me of little lanterns ~ so upright ~ they are taller and stronger looking than the more common type:
I thought these were lovely:
These were very attractive, larger than a snowdrop, almost a lily and would make a lovely show in the garden:
But this was growing in the land next to the church ~ presumably self seeded from the plants next door but I loved it!

thank you everyone, sometimes the little ones get lost in the garden but i would love some of those larger ones ~ i expect they are expensive tho; they had sold nearly everything when we got there.

Lovely pics, especially the first with all the greens! Well, they are all pretty, but I like the fact the the little ones are better at spreading than their big cousins. :)

wonderful photo's ST, I could spend ages in that setting. The larger snowdrops are very tempting but all are exquisite plants. Thanks for blogging.

What beautiful photos, so lovely. Any idea of the variety of the taller, stronger snowdrops they would have a good impact in the grass.

i got the names for one or two but couldnt see the name of those larger type. sorry.

No worries Sticki, they are so lovely. They are probably something like £2 per bulb to buy, I will just have to dream.

22 Feb, 2011
I think they look so bright and cheerfull :0)
22 Feb, 2011
i had a lovely plant last year but its come up as 3 rather straggly flowers this year ~ hope they will strengthen a bit and then spread. was hoping to find another plant to help them out.

your pics are lovely and i adore snowdrops .................. stuning , thankyou 4 sharing
22 Feb, 2011
you're welcome cristina ~ its lovely to have someone to share them with.

Enjoyed this walk round ... the larger Leucojum vernum (Spring Snowflake) will spread rapidly ... I've seen 3 bulbs for £4.50 ... ideal for bog gardens and planting by ponds. Wish I'd taken some from my Grandad's garden before he went to a home many years ago! : o )
22 Feb, 2011
oh what a shame shirley; so they need the damp then? i have very free draining soil.
22 Feb, 2011
Well, the experts advise that, but, if I remember correctly, Grandad just had them in a shady part of his garden, not really damp!
22 Feb, 2011
i can do the shady ~ thats no problem at all!! i shall look in the big GC this week!
22 Feb, 2011
Hope you find some bulbs. : o )
22 Feb, 2011
Wonderful photos Sticki.
22 Feb, 2011
thank you LL and shirley
22 Feb, 2011
I must get some of the gorgeous Leucojum vernum.
Shirley, nice to have fond memories of your Grandads garden. As they like damp and edges of pond, they would be perfect for me.
Wonder if you can buy them in the green? If not I suspect they are available as bulbs in the autumn?
22 Feb, 2011
Ah, the contradictions on these bulbs! One book says to plant them as dry bulbs in moist soil, another says they're difficult to establish as a dry bulb and are better planted 'in the green'. Make what you will of it, Dawnsaunt ... lol! : o ) Perhaps Bulbaholic would advise?
22 Feb, 2011
Good idea, Bulb would know, I'll pm him x
22 Feb, 2011
I'd like to know his thoughts on planting them too! : o )
22 Feb, 2011
Nice to see so many different types of snowdrops. But I think my favs are the ordinary ones. They are so pure and simple.
22 Feb, 2011
Sticki/Shirley: Bulbaholic has kindly got back to me.
He says Leucojum prefer a moist site and do not like to be dried out so, unless you can buy fresh bulbs in the summer, the alternative would be to buy them in the green. There are two types, the spring snowflake is L. vernum and flowers in early spring and the summer snowflake is L. aestivum which flowers in later spring and is larger - in good, moist conditions L. aestivum 'Gravetye Giant' can grow to three feet tall, can you imagine that.
Info thanks to Bulbaholic.
23 Feb, 2011
Excellent info. Dawnsaunt, thanks so much for asking Mr. B ! : o )
23 Feb, 2011
Ok Shirley, going to try and get both varieties in the green in case I can't get fresh bulbs in the Summer. Thanks to Mr B.
23 Feb, 2011
thanks for that DA and to Mr B ~ he is very good isnt he.
23 Feb, 2011
