A visit to tranquility

We recently visited John’s garden at Ashwood Nursery, Kingswinford; it’s his private garden and is only open a few times a year. I met up with lovely Daylily and her delightful daughter while I was there. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, if you get the chance do try to visit.
it begins with this ‘island bed’ in the driveway:

and then alongside the house, [where i might be storing the rubbish] in the shade are these beauties:

and turning the corner towards the garden is the gold border:

a little splash of brilliant colour from the aquilegeas:

and now into the main garden, as a continuation of the gold border is this lovely border, including thistle sculptures:

this is a small part of a rockery island bed in the centre of the garden, I liked the Ginko tree beginning to emerge:

here is one of many ‘statement’ trees ~ a white birch which i love:

the planting and colouring is exquisite; everywhere you look there is some little gem:

the sprinkling of colour like splashes from a paintbrush was like a wonderful painting to me:

i think the yellow paeonie is just spectacular:

Around every corner was another wonderful sight:

and a little place to sit:

another vista around the next bend:

yet another amazing paeony:

the sculptures were so fitting and enhanced the garden beautifully:

the sheer variety of planting staggered me:

the garden is alongside a canal:

a wider view of the garden i have described above

this is becoming quite a long blog and i dont think i have even shown you half of the photos that i would like, i may continue in tranquility 2!!

What a lovely place Sticki, great photos, enjoyed that very much.

Sticki you have done the garden justice OH and I have know John and his fantastic Nursery for more years than I care to remember, he is one of the nicest people you could wish to meet and a very talented grower of Lewisias Hellebores,(Ashwood strain) Hepaticas and has won many a gold medal. You most probably know all this?
I am looking forward to you next set of photos, we have not visited this year too much to do here......a very nostalgic trip for me......thanks.

Wonderful garden, thanks for sharing it with us!
Are the Teazels really sculptures?

14 Jun, 2011

Excellent Stickitoffee - I love the pictures and funnily enough the ginkgo tree is what we have in the front garden but couldn't remember its name last night! I believe it is the oldest type tree in the world. It has lovely stone and grael parts to the garden and that huge pot is glorious!!!!! Great and useful blog :):):):))

Thank you so much Sticki - a really lovely blog, and SO much better than the brief one I did last year! It's changed a bit since I was there - I hadn't seen the sculpture of the girl before, but everything is looking absolutely beautiful.

Really glad you went, and met up with Daylily . . . what a treat.

14 Jun, 2011

Lovely blog, I think the birch are Betula utilis Jacquemontii, very nice, I have a teeny tiny one.

14 Jun, 2011

i have a betula which was meant to be a white one but it isnt! i only wish i had ~ i think they are lovely.
it is a beautiful garden i thoroughly agree ~ thanks for looking at the photos.

14 Jun, 2011

HI Sticki :^)) The birches at this garden were the reason i chose to plant one last year to replace a tree that died, bought with my birthday money, i bought it from there too!! The tree is quite tall but still a baby, Betula utilis Jacquemonti 'Silver Shadow', so hoping it will be a nice one. Brilliant blog by the way!!

14 Jun, 2011

What a wonderful rich tapestry of plants, each grouping makes such a beautiful picture, thanks for sharing Stiki;0))

14 Jun, 2011

hi daylily ~ i also have a nice picture of you and your daughter!! thanks for your very kind comments.
that was a very sensible choice to buy your tree from there ~ and what a lovely, memorable present.

thanks PP ~ it certainly is a beautiful tapestry ~ one that i want to remember for a very long time.

14 Jun, 2011

16 Jun, 2011

you're more than welcome lincslass, thank you and thank you Ba, will look forward to your photos when you visit

Lovely photos Sticki. Beautifully laid out gardens. Love the little girl on the seat. She could sit on one of my seats anytime.....but I don't think I could afford her.

20 Jun, 2011

Nor could I dorjac - I think it would be one of those window displays with no price tickets. And then I know I can't afford it!

20 Jun, 2011

It's good to see an image in modern dress, rather than a fantasy one, or old fashioned pair of a boy tugging a girls skirt, such as we have in the garden, offering her an apple.....hidden meaning? Every form has its place, as we are all so different in taste and likes. A grandchild done this way perhaps?.....trouble is the others might say ....what about us? When I win the lottery or big premium bond.

20 Jun, 2011

You could have small versions so there would be one for each? How many grandchildren do you have?
What I like about this one is that it's realistic, there are some statues in cities now also in much more realistic poses, one in Birmingham is reclining on some steps.

20 Jun, 2011

That was me Sticki:-)

21 Jun, 2011

Ah it was you then - it was the eighteenth century male clothing that obviously fooled me!

21 Jun, 2011

No grandchildren Sticki...sigh... but I know some children keep a close eye on 'fairness'. You would get a shock if you saw a realistic fibreglass image of yourself reclining in a garden centre. About the cheapest way of doing it. Various places we have visited over the years had these figures...the dome in 2000..... Liverpool garden show, leaning on a railing looking over the Mersey. Some shopping centres too.

21 Jun, 2011

i dont have any either dorjac; but people keep asking if i have ~ i must look like a grandma!!

everyone would have a shock if there was any sort of image of me ~ im very glad to say there isnt!!

21 Jun, 2011

Sticki, you keep putting yourself down, you're lovely and don't look like a grandma lol:-)

21 Jun, 2011
