I have just read Megans blog so thought these might be useful. These pictures came as a supplement with gardeners world magazine.

in new zealand we only seem to have one of the large bees we call the bumble bee
so thanks for the pics i will see if any of your pics resemble our common bee.
we seem to only have 2 basic sorts, the honey bee, and maybe one bumble bee
so will be able to look warily at the next large bee and take note of his colors
from a pic i took some time ago
ours has a all black head and white tail with a band of yellow around its waist
and a smear of black across its white tail color and nests underground

Piersdad - seems to fit description for a white-tailed bee.

Glad it was of interest, although I must confess I don`t look too closely at those in the garden after being stung when pegging washing out.

Couldn`t agree with you more Cristina, I`ve just replaced my very very old Buddlia with a new white one to encourage the Bees and Butterflies.

Just found this Stroller, very handy, we like to revive bees with honey when they get trapped & exausted in the concervatory.

Thanks Pam and Cristina, we`ve been watching the white tailed ones going in and out under our Lean to at the side of the house. The Bombus Lucorum variety as they are nesting underground.

i'll have to take more notice-- I usually give them a wide berth, had 2 huge ones in the greenhouse after the hyacinths and it to ages to convince them to leave :)
