Stonehenge

Finally got round to doing this Stonehenge Blog, been hectic here plus dentists with a broken tooth still here goes…

According to the literature there this monument evolved between 3,000 BC and 1,600 BC and is aligned with the mid summer Sunrise and midwinter Sunset.

This first pic and second are the Sarsen standing Stones or Lintels that have fallen..

Another of the fallen lintels.

more of the Sarsen stones and inside is the Horseshoe of sarsen Trilithons.

More Sarsen Stones

in the top middle you can see the locking lump on top of the stone to help keep the lintels in place..

Another showing the interlocking top lump.

Here with a crow sitting on the lump :-)

This shows the Heel stone in the distance but i have a better one soon..

This shows the ditch in front of the stones which was dug out using stag antlers.

In it’s glory showing all the lintels and stones together.

This laying in front is know as the slaughter stone, named because of the red colouring when it rains, but is only iron oxide in the stone which gives it it’s colour when wet…

This is the closer pic of the Heel stone right by the fence.

This is the South Barrow inside the the circular ditch.

this shows one of two Barrows being excavated, there was a petition being signed while we were there in protest over the excavation.

anyway all pics were kindly taken by my youngest daughter Jade who wanted a mention on here :-)

thanks for looking and hope you enjoyed it too…

Jade's done a great job there, SL. Have you shown her some of the wonderful photos on here to inspire her too? There's a wealth of talent on here in many different forms. Stonehenge must be a fascinating place to visit.

Thanks Tuesdaybear, she's like me loves gardening and nature, sometimes she'll sit outside with me by the pond and chat about all the insects...it's a lovely place to go Stonehenge :-)

How lovely she sounds, SL. My four had all lost interest by that age! Lovely to be able to share your interest with her. Mind you, Holly's made some good choices for your garden too.

Magical place! I visited Stonehenge many years ago - when people were allowed to wander between the stones. A very eerie feeling! Glad I saw it, but was pleased to get away. Nice photography, Surreylad.

Thank you Jade for some lovely photos.
It's wonderful how they built such a thing all those years ago.

"Cult of the circle" monuments are really astonishing, aren´t they? :) You have one more exclusive place like that, it is in Ireland Brú na Bóinne.
SL, why did people protest against excavation of the tomb?

I will thanks Diane :-)

Thanks Nariz :-)

Thanks Hywel, it amazes me how they did it.

Thanks Simbad.

Thanks Kat, i just Googled that it looks amazing, they were protesting that the bodies and/or artefacts should be left untouched and rest in peace.

I agree (I did not find it, I thought you were among protesters, too :)). This same feeling I had many times when I was working as archeology volunteer during my University studies. Always, when human bones were taken from their burial places I though I wouldn´t wish that in my case. To be taken from soil, given to some paper box, got number on the shelf in museum stock, full of dust and wait for some exhibition, which would earn money for the mayor of the town.
Can you please, give me the link on that article? I am interested what is going on and why. If possible. Thank you.

i don't have a link i'm afraid Kat, you could try the english heritage site as it's all part of that. :-)

Great blog...I enjoyed that very much. I love Stonehenge and all the barrows and stone circles. I hope to go to see Orkney one of these days...only trouble is the ferry crossing is too long and the flight is too expensive!
