Girl Power!

After much pondering about what to do with my leaky pond I decided to use the stone to make a raised bed on an area which has always been rather a wasted area.

This is the pond as it was…

I moved all the stone on Friday and built a raised bed over the other side of the garden…

I did have to ask my parents over to help me lift and move the pond, so perhaps not all ‘girl power’ but most of it was!

Saturday I went shopping for perennial plants to go where the pond was, and today I dug it over, added some New Forest bark for a bit of improvement and planted my new purchases…

In here I’ve put Campanula persicifolia Blue Bell, Echinacea Primadonna Deep Rose, Coreopsis rosea Heavens Gate, Erigeron Wayne Roderick, Alstroemeria Little Miss Christina and Leucanthemum superbum Crazy Daisy. I also moved my small Daphne Adora here as it was at the end of the garden and decided I’d appreciate it closer to the house. Its looking a bit colourless at the moment but fingers crossed it will be full of colour in the summer :)

Yet to be done is filling the new stone raised bed but that will be another weekend as I’m worn out now! Have to say though I’m pretty impressed with myself :D

Good for you ! It's great when something is all your own work :o) Makes you feel good doesn't it :o)

Well done. A lot of effort this weekend and I am sure you will have a riot of colour before long. The Daphne odora needs to be where you can appreciate the perfume, so you have probably done right moving it nearer the house.

It does make me feel good Hywel, feeling quite empowered at the moment!
Cinderella yes that's what I thought, it was only planted earlier in the year so I thought I'd move it sooner rather than later :)

You've done a lot of work in a short time.
It looks good and will improve even more as the plants spread out. :o) Well done !

Lovely selection of plants you've put in - should look wonderful this summer.

So you should be pleased with yourself, Suzy. Lugging huge amounts of stone around seems like a never ending business, at the time...

Well done, it's looking fabulous! :)

I hope so Steragram and and thank you Karen, my arms and wrists still ache from lugging that stone!

Did something similar last week, Suzy, and kept waking up after with pins and needles in both arms up to my elbows! lol!

I want a raised stone bed!!!:))

22 May, 2012

Lol.... build one then :) For me I just wanted to recycle the stone I already had, too nice to get rid of, and its given me another area to play with!! Put three rose bushes into it at the weekend and today put in a few little alpines and a dwarf lavender to try and keep the greenfly at bay :)

That's the trouble with this site... too many ideas!!

22 May, 2012

Lol! I bought the lavender on Monday too!! ;)))

23 May, 2012

Hope it works Karen, I've already spotted and picked off greenfly on one of my rose bushes!!!!!

23 May, 2012

It was probably already there when you got it, Suzy...

I don't really like using chemicals - but, I do if I have to!

23 May, 2012

Didn't notice any Karen.... but yes, I will too if needs be, but will see what happens with the Lavender.

23 May, 2012

Yes, me too.

You've done a fantastic job there Suzy, really lovely! Well done. I find gardening is the best therapy....along with painting sometimes....and there's nothing that boosts my mind-set in to a positive more than seeing things growing and coming in to flower. There's the creative side of it as well, which you have shown here. Making something that you've seen in your mind's eye, on your own steam, with a spade and a fork, and getting a good work-out at the same time....unbeatable! Then, at the end, when you look out at it and wow, it looks GOOD!...and then, as you watch the plants flourish and grow and flower.....unbeatable! :D

Thanks Karen! I'm really pleased I joined this site, all the encouragement!! I'm even thinking of getting a little mini greenhouse!

6 Jun, 2012

Go for it Suzy! :D Growing stuff from seed can save you money and it's just a great place to hide in bad weather!

6 Jun, 2012

...word of caution...I've had the plastic covered ones in the past and the wind wreaks havoc with them. Only get one if you have a very sheltered site. I bet you could get a good one on freecycle or such sites.

6 Jun, 2012

I haven't really got the space for a proper greenhouse Karen so it would have to be a plastic mini one... but it's better than nothing!

6 Jun, 2012

Yes, it is! I used to enjoy mine before we moved here to this windier place! When we came here I tried to attach it to the fence so it woudn't blow away, but the wind just shredded the plastic! You get the problem.....so funny me trying to battle nature! Then a very kind friend left me some money in her will and I used it to buy my little octagonal one which now has pride of place in the lawn. Being octagonal, it has great 'aerodynamics' and the wind just moves nicely around it! :)) Don't you love a happy ending? :D

6 Jun, 2012

Being on a corner it does tend to get windy, but in the winter I have got a sheltered spot I could put it. Yours does look nice, gives your garden a nice feature. Maybe one day I'll have one ha

6 Jun, 2012

I hope you will Suzy, but tbh, they are hard work. I have to paint it every year, and clean it out twice a year, and remember to water everything every day......but it is a great place for growing cucumbers and bringing on small plants and seedlings...so I guess it is worth it.

Well done Suzy that is looking great:)
