Mellons

I have usually thought of melons as exotic fruit best suited to a heated greenhouse, but not having a greenhouse I decided to try them in the raised bed. I looked up how to grow them and it seems melons need a rich, fertile, moisture retentive, deep and well-drained soil, so I thought the bed would be ideal. When the fruits were the size of walnuts, I fed them with a high potash potassium liquid fertilizer every seven to ten days or so. The melons got bigger but didn’t seem to be ripening and I thought the experiment had failed, until this morning when I decided to cut one open just to see. I ‘m happy to report that they have ripened and are lovely to eat, sweet with that slight scented taste. I will be growing them again next year, so if you like melon but don’t have a greenhouse how about giving them a go some time, you never know till you try!

What an amazing achievement Teds. I shall put this blog on my faves, and try these next year in my greenhouse...we are, after all, so much further north! :)

Just had one for lunch Karen, they are YUM!!!! We have had a good summer here in Devon this year, so I may of just been lucky they were a success. I had them growing in the bed next to a south facing wall, I thought they might do well there as the Passion flower romps away on the wall, I have to cut it back ever couple of weeks. Good luck for next year! :-)

I was going to clear out the bed Scotkat as the foliage had stated to die back on them, so it was a nice surprise to find I had my lunch waiting for me LOL.

Great stuff Teds - well done! I guess we have the lovely weather to thank in addition to all your TLC. they look delicious.

Thanks Steragram we have been lucky with the weather this year and they are Yum!

I have know idea Karen what our Passion flower is called, we inherited it when we moved here but nothing seems to stop it. We cut it down to the ground when the windows went in the side of the bungalow. It came back with a vengeance and has bloomed all summer, it now has fruit on it. It was even coming up indoors through a crack in the floor between the conservatory and the lounge, I had to keep pulling it up. I will post up a pick of mine for you, I think they take a few years to get established so you may get some flower next year hopefully!

Fantastic!

I also have a Passion flower. It's huge, rampant, exuberant - and not one flower! There is a bud (!) which I am watching with bated breath. Any tips, Teds?

Thanks all all trough I don't think I deserve any praise, juts popped the seeds in and away they went. Must off been the hot summer we have had.

Hi Melchisedec, I think a Passion flower likes a lot of sun to flower, mine is on a south facing wall, I neglect it terrible but it seems to do well. I don't feed it or water it that much unless it has been very dry. Just lucky I think, but it has been there for a very long time and must have a very extensive root system, so maybe that's the secret there has to be some benefits to old age LOL

Funnily enough, mine has just produced a few buds. I am hoping they will have time to open. I shall be interested to see what they produce. I believe there are several different Passion flower varieties. I just bought this very cheaply from Asda - no info with it at all.

I'm trying a melon this year for the first time, it's just at the flowering stage now, it's still in a pot & I just stood it out for pollination before repotting it again.
Your blog gives me high hopes that it will be a success.
