Visit to Compton Acres, Bournemouth

Thursday afternoon, we visited Compton Acres; we came here once before, about 30 years ago. Like most other places we have revisited, they had opened a visitor centre/restaurant/gift shop and plant sales area which put me off a bit, but the gardens were as good as ever.

The Italian garden

The Palm Court Garden with Well

Two of three large cascades on the Woodland Walk.

This tiger was burnished bright!

The third large cascade

Now and then some delicate beauty

Did we just discover the last Dodo?

In the sunshine this looked like spun silk

The Rock and Water Gardens. How I wish I could have this pretty set of cascades in my garden!

It was the perfect spot to sit, listen to the gentle flow of water….and find out where we were!

“Come! Be my supper”

Gay abandon!!

Fancy meeting you here

The Heather Garden. Stood looking into it gave me the strange sensation of being Gulliver looking into Lilliput!

This is a sad little garden “The Memory Garden”. The then owners (the Beards) had 3 children. Dick, they lost in 1942, and the two daughters Elizabeth and Anne both died of polio. There are 3 seats with their names carved in the back

More delicate beauty

The famous Japanese Gardens

We left reluctantly to find our hotel and gird our loins for more garden visits on the morrow!!

Quite stunning Tet. Wonderful pictures here, loved it, going into Favs. Have been a couple of times myself, but seeing it through your eyes and camera lens is just beautiful. Thank you for showing. I must go again.

Thanks Bloomer, Cinders. We certainly will go again. Watch out for coach trips Cinders, they do them to C.Acres..a bit far for you Bloomer, but they just might do an overnight stay, and there is plenty more to see down there.

Wow - fantastic place. Lovely blog and some really great photos. Well done.

Lovely photos as ever, Tet . . . thanks for the tour. Did you realise that Lilliput is just down the road from here?? Where my family lived all those years ago. Took OH here a couple of years ago, and the Japanese garden was the highlight.

No! I didnt realise that Sheilabub, how extraordinary!! All I know is that the Heather Garden gave me an uncanny sense of my looking into a smaller world. But I never knew a Lilliput was part of Poole...I just googled it. Thanks for that.

Have heard of C.acres so many times from various people but have never seen photos. What a beautiful garden and I especially like the Japanese area, so tranquil. Thanks T. for the look.

what an incredible place, fantastic photos, looks so peaceful.

Yes, agree with everyone...amazing and varied gardens. Funny you should say that about the visitor centres that are being added on everywhere....I love them. I love to end my visit with a bit of a cream tea and a browse around the gifts etc. Even though I don't usually buy anything, it's nice to look at.

What a fab place to look round thankyou for taking us round with you.

Looks fab, i am in Weymouth at the moment, thinking of going to Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens!! Nearly went to this garden a couple of years ago and went to Knoll Gardens instead, will have to find the photos out! :^)

Thanks Yorkie, Grandmage, Clarice.
Karen, I was probly being a bit unkind really, as we spent half an hour looking for the place (it was so built up compared with 30 years ago) and being an old codger I like changes less and less lol! However I do feel they are all the same, sell the same things and most of it expensive. The restaurant had some wobbly tables and uncomfortable chairs (all fairly new) and the staff were a tad offhand. The plants sales however were very reasonable and well laid out. I bought a lovely Verbascum Helen Johnson about to flower for £3.49!
Daylily, we nearly went to Abbotsbury too, but leaving it to fit with a visit to Lulworth Castle and Cove. My next blog is a private garden who buy grasses from Knoll Gardens just down the road. Decided not to do Knoll cos its more of a Grasses Nursery, but would love to see pictures. Do post!

Love this place we have some of our work do's there your photos are lovely:)

Daylily - DO go to Abbotsbury Gardens - they are beautiful! Tet, you probably made the right decision . . . Knoll Gardens website is better to visit than their nursery, and Lulworth is not to be missed. Oh dear, getting nostalgic for my old haunts now. :))

Fabulous blog, Tet, so much to see in one place! ... Added to Favourites for future reference ... many thanks for sharing these beautiful gardens ... :o))) . . . . .

Im always on the lookout for hidden delights (no rude remarks from you BA!) and Great Britain has so much to offer...I feel sure it was the original Eden!! We definitely will go to Lulworth Sheilabub, dont blame you for being nostalgic and I still have one hidden gem blog to go.
Next year we want to visit some gardens in Northern Ireland and there are a few in Scotland and Wales too.
Thanks everyone, its a pleasure to share them with you.

You will love Lulworth cove,Tet..but you will have seen
pics of it many times,I'm sure...you won't be disappointed,it's as good as the tourist posters portray it..lucky you.:o))

Like you Tetrarch, I last visited these gardens about 30 years ago and had only a hazy memory but it all started to come back. All your lovely pics make me want to go and see it again now that I know more about gardening. Lovely blog and many thanks for showing us round :o)

I actually visited Lulworth Cove on my first honeymoon 48 years ago Bloomer, but never did the castle! Would like to go back with my OH of 30 years and explore that and Abbotsbury and Swanage also.
Thanks Lily I know what you mean..and its nice to put names to plants!

Another lovely blog Tet! You will be worn out - all these trips and then writing it up - I think you will have to be GoY's roving reporter!
We went to Compton acres probably 30 years ago too! Some bits look the same - but the tiger wasn't there then! I love the water, the woodland and thejapanese garden, I also like the heather garden.
Thank you Tetrarch, I shall look forward to your next adventure!

Glad you enjoyed Sticki..I think of them as adventures too. It was a shame money was tight years ago, there were so many places abroad I would like to have seen. But there is nothing like this island to explore, besides the fact we drive on the correct side of the road lol!!

same here tet ~ we never did the disney thing that lots seem to do now ~ not enough money!!
anyway as you say its good here too!! especially scotland but i wish it wasnt so far away.

Went to Abbotsbury today, really enjoyed it, took lots of piccys, dont know why but was expecting it to be flat, walked up the hill to the viewpoint, made our legs ache on the way down, but had a really nice time, Tet, sounds like you are having a good time too :^)

Thanks.

Thanks Angie.
Stroller, I took a walking stick, but there are lots of seats around to "sit and stare". If ever you spend a weeks holiday there, its worth a couple of visits!

I am stunned speechless at this fantastic garden, Tet, and have got to go and see it for myself, you have stimulated my interest in it so much, and Bournemouth is only about 50 miles from us. This is just beautiful, and what a perfect blog too. Thanks for sharing this my dear friend..\0/
