Painting Pots

Let’s see who knows the answer to this one. I have lots of plastic pots in my garden, especially in the summer. I can’t afford to replace them with stone, glazed or terracotta. I’ve been told I could paint them…but which kind of paint should I use? I assume it needs to be weather proof yet adhere to plastic. Would ordinary gloss do?
Thanks!

DIY/Garden stores used to sell a spray paint for doing just this I expect they still do try B&Q Waddy. - Just looked it up and found 'Painters Touch - Rustoleum' spray paint for indoor and outdoor use.

I bought some terracotta coloured paint this summer and painted all my plastic planters to make sure they all toned in with each other. It was really effective and I was mightily proud of myself. I used stone paint - the sort of things we'd use for the concrete surrounds to doors and windows, and except where the plastic of the pots was particularly smooth and shiny, it hasn't chipped, flaked or washed off at all. Good luck!

I would use any paint I find in the shed, if it comes off just do them again Waddy, I have one done with masonry paint, it worked well....

A few years ago I painted three plastic window boxes with white gloss paint. I've got them on my shed. They are still as good as the day I painted them :o)

Plus if you are anything like us then there is always paint left over already in the shed, lol.....

I would try sanding the pots lightly with some sandpaper, the paint would adhere to it better I think.

Just to add to what as already been suggested the Beatrix Potter characters I painted last winter I used both Gloss and Acrylic And finished it all with a coat of Marine quality clear varnish .So far so good.

We painted some plastic ones with a matt paint for a conservatory, it was ok but a bit delicate, pronr to chipping off.
it would need doing every year and not last outside longer than the summer but possibly you could use matchpots to give you a good colour range without too much expense
