Greenhouse

I’m suffering from withdrawal symptoms as I can only pop in to the greenhouse, water quickly and get out again. Yes, I’m playing host to a pair of robins and their family. First noticed the nest when I reached out to pick up an empty tub for some seeds and thought ’what’s that awful mess on the shelf?’ I’ve never seen such a scruffy pile of leaves, moss etc but it was obviously a nest at the back of it and investigation revealed three eggs. The next day there were four so it was obvious evasive action was necessary.
They’ve now hatched (don’t know how many) and parents are in and out feeding. Hurry up and fledge so I can have my greenhouse back!!!!!

What do you mean; your greenhouse?

14 Jun, 2010

One of those things where you start seeds off, take cuttings, potter happily among your plants......or do you mean it's not MY greenhouse - it's the Robins' greenhouse?

You got it.

I'm more than happy to sign it over to them for the duration - when the parents were out I held my hand over the nest and could feel the warmth of the chicks - it was quite magical!

Knowing that you will care for them I hope you have many more magical moments.

Thats the thing with Robins, they`ll nest anywhere. Last year one of them started a nest in an water meter box on a shelf in the garden centre shop, luckily it must have realised it wasn`t a good place and abandoned it for somewhere else. We`ve also had them nesting in hanging baskets and had to corden off the area so they could safely bring up the chicks. :o)

Ah, cute!.....also a bit frustrating!

That is great you have robins nesting hope you have success and nothing scares them off lovely news, I m sorry to hear that you can't go into your green house much but will all be worth it in the end when the little ones hatch.

Wagger, it may be a bit frustrating, but how magical for you! Hope all the new borns fair well~your greenhouse obviously as welcoming and warm as you are!!

How wonderful that you will have baby robins! Hope you get to see them in your garden!

How delightful and frustrating at the same time.....

That's very kind, Toto.
I've read of one actually raising a family on a shelf in a nursery, Labdancer - sales were down that spring, :-)))
Frustrating is right, Karen and Daisy - not much seed germinations this year!!
They've already hatched, 6d - that's what was giving off the heat.
Aw, you say the nicest things, Flori :-))))
I expect to see them in the greenhouse first, Jan - the youngsters don't go far when they first fledge. I had nest in my woodstore several years ago and they were hopping all over the woodpile for several days.
I'll have to be on cat alert - I've seen a neighbour's cat sitting on the roof of the greenhouse but it flees before I can get close enough to soak it!

Good job it's not too hot for them or they would bake !!!! I just love Robins we feed ours with mealy worms which they can't get enough of.

They've picked the shady corner, Crandmage so they'd still be ok. I should imagine that like cage birds they love high temperatures. The average bird's body temperature is 40° Centigrade, far higher than ours.

I hope you get it back soon. I had a robbin's nest in a greenhouse once but there were never any robbins in it. I think they saw me and decided to go elsewhere lol. I was glad :o))

Well, I had to disturb them again this afternoon but the adults went straight back in.
It's amazing how quickly they fledge, Hywel. We had baby bluetits in the bird feeder this afternoon - that was lovely to see.

15 Jun, 2010

I went on a short walk yesterday and I could hear lots of baby birds in the trees. My friend I was with said they were Bluetits. There were lots.

I think there have to be lots of babies to compensate for the losses through winter - especially winters like our last one. Nature knows all about compensation!

any photos ?

Afraid not, Kfunsters. I've watched them nipping in and out feeding but let them get on with it as much as possible. I still have to go in the greenhouse to water but they have to put up with that.

How lovely for you even if it does stop you doing all you want. Yesterday I noticed some of the new succulent leaves on a pruned viburnum opulus were totally covered with black fly, you couldn't see the stems at all. In vengeful mood, I stomped indoors to fetch my secateurs, determined to cut off the affected stems and bin them, that'd teach 'em. Just as I went to snip, I noticed a hoverfly laying eggs on the affected stems...marvelled at nature...and left well alone. Hoverfly eggs, not as cute as baby robins, but I don't have any of those:-))

That'll see off your blackfly, Bornagain.

Just after we moved here, I went into the polytunnel in the evening and found a confused kingfisher stuck in it. It was so dazed I was able to pick it up and take it back down to the river about a hundred metres away.
Lots of ordinary birds use the polytunnel in winter for shelter overnight, although the doors are now tighter fitting and I expect they won't get in next winter. Perhaps I'll leave the door open for them.
Like you, I think it is great to share our gardens (and greenhouses) with wild life.

Wow, that close to a kingfisher! I wonder what it thought your polytunnel was? a stream?
