Freebies out of old pallets

The general idea of making a nice garden costs a lot these days,so me and my boyfriend decided to try and make some of the larger items that you find in gardens for free or nearly free.As we wanted to put our money into nice plants.First of all we made a list of some of the items we would like in the garden,we then decided on wood as old bricks and sand and cement cost to much. Here are some pictures of what we made out of the old pallets and a lot of the time nails off the old pallets. So the cost came down too,all we then had to pay out for was the stain for the wood.
hiding the bins is a good start (cost 0 pounds )
the fence beside it (cost 0 pounds )
box planters (cost 0 pounds )
the archway (cost 0 pounds )
the garden bench with attached box planters generally was the hardest to make ( £2 for some nails ) the pallets for this one came off sheet metal pallets because there either made out of 3×2 or 4×4 timber
different types of trellising total cost for all ( £5 for all the nails )
in general it takes longer to make things yourself but the cost will remain lower than buying the items, hope you all like the pictures and the very last picture is very easy to make and can be made for free
the pot holder :)

Gosh you should hire him out, he`s made some grand additions for the garden and I bet they are very strong as well, being recycled pallets....

Hi, your boyfriend is a genius!, I love the garden seat and the archway, that has now put some ideas in my head !.

Great work.... I'm a hoarder and believer in re-using just about everything; sometimes it drives Mrs. expats wild as she dislikes 'clutter'.
It seems you and your boyfriend are like minded so that should make life easier.

Fantastic vision - I love it. Just shown the bin screen to my OH as our ugly bins annoy me. I love the arch - you both should be very proud and goes to show that you can garden on a budget.Keep the photos coming as you plant everything up.

You are a great team and have made such a difference to your garden with all your handmade wooden items. It is great when you have someone who is handy in this way; I have a hubby who does not excel in DIY (nor do I) and it sure runs away with the money when it's necessary to hire workmen.
Good for you....great job :)

That was great. It's nice to be able to make things yourself - and save some money too :) Everything looks good, and will probably last longer than the rubbish you'd get in those big stores.

Well done! Everything looks great, I'm a big reuse, recycler so I think what you've done is great.
I like to start plants from cuttings so that a cheap way to go for plants.
Best of luck.

i found your blog the other day, then forgot where i found it duh
It's brilliant!
On the way to work i was walking past some pallets in a skip and thinking 'what a waste, they could be put to good use im my garden as pot stands!'
You've gone tonns further and it looks amazing!
I love the arch and the bed box's. Hywel's right looks loads better than some of the stuff you get in the big chain shops and Libet, Gilli, Angie and everyone are right you get a real sence of pride when making it yourself, reusing and recycling at the same time! = )

hi claire it took about 2 and a half pallets to make the arch we also recycled some of the nails that came out of the pallets so then all you need is the stain good luck with your arch :)

That's very inventive W! Your boxes, fences and trellis's are really well made, you both seem to take great pride in your work, and it really shows! Have you started to hoard, sorry!, collect plants for the front beds yet? It's hard to resist buying plants when you see them for a good price, and you know exactly where you want to put them! Keep up the good work, and keep showing us pics of your great progress! Happy gardening!
