William Morse Berry Park (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

We are researching our family trees (involves quite a few branches of our family…mindboggling!!) and in the process we were reminded that my great uncle (William Morse Berry) had a career as Superintendent of Parks in Minneapolis and there is a park and parkway there named in honour of the part he played in that role.

There are a few links (via Google) about his history but this is just a little bit that was manageable to put in this blog….

….William Berry Park is located between Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun in the Linden Hills neighborhood. Known for its wooded, hilly landscape, the park’s natural beauty has been preserved since it was acquired in 1889. Originally named Interlachen Park – meaning between the lakes – the park was renamed in honor of the park system’s first Superintendent, William Morse Berry in 1916.

Some history I’ve uncovered…William Morse Berry came to Minneapolis in 1884 from Chicago (he had been a park engineer responsible for implementing the park designs of Horace Cleveland in Chicago parks). Cleveland provided the first plans for a Minnesota park system in 1883 and designed the city’s early parks. On his recommendation William Berry was appointed Parks Superintendent, serving in that capacity until he retired in 1906.

During his Superintendency Berry managed the growth of Minneapolis parks from nothing into a celebrated park system. My great uncle originated from the state of Maine before taking up both the Chicago and Minneapolis positions.

The park was renamed William Berry Park in 1916 (priorly Interlochen Park) to honour his long service to the city and the parkway through the park was renamed to Wm. Berry Parkway in 1968.

……I know this is a long, wordy blog but I wanted to share with my GOY friends a little something about my great uncle. There is a more detailed account of his Superintendency and how the parks developed if you are interested….

~ My late dad visited Minneapolis about 25 yrs. ago, toured the park and was made most welcome as he researched a bit of his uncle’s history. I am rather proud of this heritage….boy, could I ever use my great uncle’s help with my little patch!…a piece of cake for him.

If you got this far in my blog….CONGRATULATIONS for your perseverance! I hope I can locate some photos (from the early beginnings and up-to-date) of the park as I think it would be most interesting.

I found your blog interesting. I hope you can find some photos. I would love to see them. I always think 'gardening' comprises more than just fiddling with plants in a bit of ground behind your house. Something like this adds variety, and makes it more personal and individual.

I'm on the lookout for an email address and I'll then ask about photos of the park. I previously found information online (with photos) but can't seem to locate it at the moment. A lot of the detailed information on the net is copyright as well so don't want to copy it and get into trouble.

I'll update as and when, Hywel. Pleased you found the blog interesting...it was rather long with just print.

Pleased you liked the bog, Joanella and that you share an interest in geneology. You will have been so happy to trace your father's photos (sadly after his passing). My hubby has taken up tracing his side of the family (needs a hobby now we're retired). The web is certainly a goldmine of information.

My mom's side of the family is very interesting too and we have quite a lot of information on that but my dad's side (Berry) is still a mystery to me....so that's where I'm going to research presently.

Wow that was interesting, your love of gardening and flowers must have passed down to you from your great Uncle. I have also researched my ancestors on both sides as far back as Great Great grandparents, but nothing as interesting as your find, my great granddad and Grandad were both Lamplighters and Knocker up's on the streets of Salford. I also researched my husbands famiily back to the greatgrand parents, my husband lost two uncles in the 1st War and his grandad was born in milatry quarters in Lucklow India. I found a couple of free sites on the Internet if you are interested I will P.M them to you;0)

Thanks, PP.....It's fun to uncover the past. My one regret is that I didn't ask more questions of my parents when they were still with us. I did hear lots of stories about my mom's side of the family (some were fabrications...she came from a large family of 13 and boy could they invent some whoppers!) but my dad's family was always a mystery to me. And of course once I married there was another whole family tree!

I'll look out for you PM...ta.

Joanella....I tried to get some information from one of the sites you gave me details of but it seems you can only go so far with your research and then like other geneology sites you have to join.

We did consider joining ancestry.co.uk but it is £150/yr. and wonder if it is justified. We shall see...with both hubby and I interested and each of us having our own laptop it could well be a justified expense. Hubby is much better at research than I am....I end up all confused and he has to sort me out with all my info! lol

Bloomer....it would be a nice hobby to have in the winter months when there isn't so much to do in your garden....worth a consideration if you are interested. You do meet some lovely people as you research.

A very interesting blog W'lass....my OH does a lot of genealogy and certainly gets his money's worth from Ancestry.co.uk. About a year ago he found a whole branch of my friend next door's family in Canada that they didn't know existed. It resulted in many letters passing between 2 half sisters both in their 90's and a visit to Canada by my friend and husband. They are all thrilled and my OH is delighted to have made it possible. This is the side of genealogy I find interesting rather than names on paper dating back hundreds of years. I'd be no good at it as I can't ever remember who's who! LOL. I'm good at deciphering the handwriting in old records though! :o))

Yes, Lily...I think it's a great hobby...I do wonder if I would stick with it because of my tendency to get easily confused with my poor memory. It's wonderful that your OH was able to assist your friend to locate relatives in Canada...and even to accomplish their reunion.

If my hubby continues his interest I will suggest again that he join the site. I could argue that he can join ancestry co.uk and I could get the garden done...maybe not quite a fair exchange but it might work! lol

Mmm....not sure ?150 would get too much done in your garden that wouldn't also involve him in some hefty DIY.....so maybe not such a good deal from his point of view. Poor memory, confusion?....ooh that does sound familiar W'lass :o((

Ah yes, Lily, but he also got a laptop from me for his birthday this summer....so you see things are adding up....lol...(at least that's my point of view).

I agree though the £150 would only be a spec in the ocean! :(

I've never been to the Wm. Morse Berry park as I wasn't aware of it when I was visiting Minnesota at the young age of 16...I went to Rush Lake, Minnesota to stay with a friend...I loved the scenery around all the lakes (some were like oceans!...so big) and we drove to Duluth. Nice memories as you say, San.
