A visit to Sizergh Castle & gardens

On one of the nicer days (weatherwise) last week hubby and I decided to have a drive out to visit Sizergh Castle & Gardens and then went on to Kirkby-Lonsdale and surrounds…beautiful scenery. We toured the castle (more like a large home really, owned by the NT), situated at the gateway to the Lake District. The property has beautiful gardens, a pond, lake, national collection of hardy ferns and a natural limestone rockery. It was in this rockery that I took most of my photos.

The house is still lived in by the Strickland family although we were able to view quite a few different areas of the house. The property totals 1,600 acres (we only managed to see one small part!) and is situated very near to Kendal in the Lake District.

A group of volunteers were tidying the rock garden and it was really looking very pretty…

Wonderful blooms…

Time for a sit-down (from this viewpoint you could look out over the rock garden and it was a sight to behold)…

Lovely fresh growth (such contrast on the greens)…

A meandering clematis just outside the rock garden. We passed this enroute to view the lake…

Well, that’s it folks! Sorry I didn’t get any photos of the castle/home itself. If you’d like to visit this NT property, the website is:

Woops…(almost forgot)…..I did get a couple of photos of another “house” seen on the porch outside the gift shop and teahouse….lol

What beautiful photographs you took Whistonlass, lovely lovely gardens, fantastic lake. How is the garden coming on have you got your lady there yet? Keep thinking about it and hoping you are getting your design kicked into shape by your lady gardener. Don't forget to post the in work progress pictures for us all to see. Thanks for the lovely blog.

The garden isn't underway yet, Olive...she is to be here either tomorrow or Wednesday to begin. I am hoping the heavy rain we are having today is going to finish (although I know many still haven't had a drop). I don't expect the gardeners will mind working in the rain as they probably do that quite often but they are meant to be painting our concrete fencing and that won't be possible in these wet conditions.

I was most impressed with the rock garden and thanks too for your nice comments on the photos :)

This is a beautiful place Jaquie and some stunning photos !
Is it a wheelchair friendly place ?
Love the acers .:)

I am not certain about it being wheelchair friendly, Judy. From what I can see in our NT Handbook there are parts of the property that are wheelchair friendly. If you look on the website (address in my blog) you may get better information. I was using my stick on that day and probably looked a bit of a mountain goat as I got around that rock garden...lol We didn't visit any other parts of the garden as once we had gone through the house and the rock garden I was pretty well whacked!

I agree, Judy...the acers were my favourite too :)
