EARTH HOUR

Hi everyone……While I was our shopping this morning, a young lady stopped me. She was representing WWF……. Me being me thought oh no here we go, someone else after money, but no……..To my surprise she wasnt. WWF are trying to do their BIT and conserving, as they do, a little more than just wild life…… The promotion is for as many people as possible to turn OFF their lights for ONE HOUR at the same time. This EARTH HOUR as its being called is for…….. MARCH 28th from 8.30pm to 9.30pm………… She asked only that I tell as many people as I could, and that they could maybe tell all their friends. So of course, my immediate reaction was to jump on here as soon as I got home . I know we are all conservationists in our own little way, and I am sure you will all be willing to give it a go. I will post a reminder nearer the date, which is one I shan’t forget as its my Dear Dads birthday, and Im sure you will join me in "switching off " for an hour. Anyway…….I assured the young lady that I would and was about to walk away, when she said " this is for you.."………

I was amazed…instead of wanting something, she had actually given me a lovely jar candle, which smells gorgeous, just for me spreading the word. How nice in this day and age…………….Nobody has ever given me something for nothing before……..Im quite chuffed……………

Sounds a good idea, but will the National Grid be able to cope with everyone switching back on simultaneously, it doesn't take much to upset a sub-station.
Perhaps asking everyone to switch off for an hour at some point during the evening / day would be less likely to upset.

Sounds sensible, Xela.

Is it only lights to go off? Can I still use my computer? I am going into town tomorrow and wonder if all bigger centres will have WWF representatives around. Sounds like a good idea.

will remember that day before my and my daughters birthday (yes she was born on my birthday haven't had a look in since!!) isn't it nice though that you get something for nothing (well turning your lights off) these days, no wonder you were surprised.

No they have thought of that Xela...it is only lights not all electricity

i remember last yr when all the lights were switched off for an hr, it was a saturday and there were extra guards drafted in to the city centre as they expected lots of trouble when the lights went off lol. happy to say there was no bother at all

I wonder if it the same time for all time zones? If you do it at 8:30 your time that would be at 30 minutes past noon here. We are 8 hours behind you. It wouldn't make much sense to do it in the middle of the day. I better do some research.

I just had a look on the website for WWF. Everyone turns off their lights at 8:30pm in their own time zone. So I'll be turning off my lights 8 hours after the people in the UK.

Thanks Milky for the informative blog. :o)

Wow Milky, thanks for the reminder.
They did this a couple of years back and there were pictures from major cities around the world before and during the 'black out'.
Paris turned off the Eiffel Tower lights and Sydney did the same with Opera House. I seem to remember Nasa had some satellite images too and the difference was amazing.
It's good that you'll have a lovely candle to light up the dark though, candle light is so lovely, very comforting I think.
