~Wild Winter Walk~

*It is winter here.

The mountains are the first to tell us so and the way the cold damp air soaks into your bones, it is them that are the next to speak.

My dogs and I spent some time out on a frosty morning.
Cold enough to make your lungs squeak.

These photos have been taken over the last couple of days. We started out right about 7:30 a.m. on the day we took our walk.

But first here is the moon on an eve before our bright morning. It is rising over the North Cascade Mountains. There is a haze in the evening sky so you can only see the foothills

I could not resist this zoom shot of this clear, crispy winter moon.

The mountains are waking up with the cold of their peaks showing well on this zoom shot I did before we left on our walk. My neighbor has not gotten up and turned off her outside lights yet…

Here the morning sun shines brightly into the forest trail area that we will walk though.

Jackfrost has been biting the wild blackberry leaves.

Mt. Rainier! Wake up we are here!

The deer trails and field are frosty. The salty water of the bay is warmer than the air right now.

Look ….frozen in the muddy deer trail…tracks…it looks like deer and maybe something else…not sure what.

Oh… there are those dogs by the Touching Tree…and there are the frosty edges along the trail. The early morning sunshine is very welcome.

Here are the trunks of the Touching Tree..we must touch it and admire it’s muscle..mmm..yes you are very strong, very smooth and amazingly cold to the touch! I should have worn my gloves….

I looked up above the wild black berry briars along the bluff side of the trail to see these finches sitting in the sunlight flitting about enjoying themselves and twittering about their plans for the morning.

In the shade below, these yarrow plants made a lovely frosty fringe at the feet of the briars…

I chose a flat piece of rip-rap to sit on at the waters edge to write in my journal. The Marina and clock tower can be seen in the distance. All is still sleeping there.

The marsh has not woken..there is a light skim of ice over it..

More frosty leaves….

…This art sculpture called Bird Wing…It seems out of place here… in our Marsh area…

I would rather see this.. wild dill growing inside this corral used for horses that can be rode on the trail.

I looked up to the bluff top at the trees that the eagles like to sit in while they hunt….No eagles here today.

We are under the Madrona, our Touching Tree..almost back at the trail that leads us into the forest now.

More frozen tracks..Bobcat I think…not big enough for a cougar..but large and not too dog like.

Phoebe looks into the forest. I wonder what she sees…

More tracks I think she saw a raccoon…this is one of their tracks.

Phoebe has gone ahead up the trail….she runs… Sofie, Munchie and I walk, it is getting steep.

Before we get inside, I see this little mushroom in my lawn…no taller than a blade of grass…I lay in the grass to get this shot…my dogs think I am crazy.

Owner of my home, 22 year old Yoda greets me for a pet. She does not leave her favorite Royal pillow on top of the dryer in the laundry room as we enter the back door. Hi “Cranky Tale Cat”..do you mind if I stop long enough to take off my hiking boots?

This morning we woke up to this. Our first snow of the season.

The moon this morning..setting in the West as the sun peeked over the Mt.s in the East. Gull is there every morning as well on his favorite light pole.

I had to do it……two moon shots opened the blog and two moon shots close it. I love this one of the moon hung on the tree limb like a bright Christmas ornament. I hope you have enjoyed.

A lovely walk Cat. Thanks for sharing. I'm surprised you got snow. None up here yet but it is COLD! I quite like the wing sculpture but perhaps you're right about it looking out of place. Yoda is a sweetie....give her a pet from me. :o)

Oh my..it is a late time I am getting on GOY this morning..and look at all of you! Thank you all for your likes and your messages.

Gilli: Yes I was a bit surprised about the snow...but 37 years ago my second daughter was born on the 5th of December. I remember walking to the hospital in labor on a sheet of ice and the wind howled so that it blew a window out in our home. I stayed with my parents while the pipes were thawed and the window replaced and the house warmed again. :)
The art sculpture would be nicer in a setting where more people would see it perhaps in a public park. The beauty of this trail and the Marshes do not need sculture to add to its beauty.
I will let my boss(Yoda) know that you are sending a pet her way...lol..

Madabout plants...the touching tree came of many a walk to that tree and I am including the story of the touching tree in a collection I am hoping to publish but not likely on GOY..it will be part of a book I am working on.

Oh boy Spritz, would Henry ever love it ..lol...Phoebe loves company on her hunts..always tells the other dogs to come with her... and we have so many mountains here you must come for a visit one day.

Thank you Marie..and the Madonna Tree thanks you too! :)

Mavis I could sit just about anywhere on this trail and see something lovely...as Hywel said..I live in a lovely area..the sights abound. The native American Tribes that lived here before us..held this particular peninsula (Quimper Peninsula) to be no one's territory. All were able to come here as a neutral ground and they called it their healing place. I believe we need to do the same again..it needs to be shared and respected for the beauty that is so rich and abundant here. If you look on a map of this area the shape of the Peninsula and the little Islands right off of it resemble a dragon...I live in the throat of the dragon.
Hi Sid ..glad you made it..! Thank you
Oh yes Arlene...never fear..we stay warm..I have some very nice silk warm wear for under my clothing that my daughter gave me last year..wonderful stuff.

Clarice don't you just love the way they beep-beep and chatter..they are so much fun to hear. So happy and busy sounding...

Thank you Milky...and walking this way is much warmer too..it has been way to cold to get out yesterday and today..I have been staying in and keeping warm..a bit afraid of slipping on ice...so no going out on the trails unless I can get a pair of grippers for my shoes.

I wonder if we can get the GoY Bus on a ship - then we can all come and visit!! How nice that would be.

Here it is looking very pretty in the countryside - there is a thin covering of frozen snow and an air frost last night has turned the trees white. The sky is a flawless china blue and makes the snow in the shadows look blue. At 9:00 this morning it was -5 degrees here. It all looks very Christmassy, but boy are those footpaths treacherous.......

I would like to hear more about that book you're working on Cat...... :-)

It sounds pretty Sarah..winter can be both beautiful and treacherous as at once!
My book is not really a book so much as a collection of my thoughts that ramble through my mind. It is mostly about places that can only be gotten to in our magical, ethereal mind. Fun place to hold up when winter sets in especially!

I think writing is a good way to get things out of your head and recorded somewhere other than in your head, which requires effort. Kind of purging all that information and putting it on to a backup disc instead of filling up the hard drive! In the winter when there is nothing to do outdoors, I sometimes do some writing. For the past 3 years I've been writing a novel. I'm not very good at it, but actually DOING it was the only way of getting it off my mind! I had this story floating around up there, bumping into things and generally getting in the way. It just had to be written. I'm about a third the way though now and every now and then I have an idea for what happens next and I have to get it down on paper. It's actually quite a dark story.....I think it has become a way of dealing with people that I meet that I feel have treated me unkindly or unfairly, as it is those people that I think about when someone gets killed in my story!!! Do you know Daphne du Maurier's short story 'The Birds' (the base for the Hitchcock film)? It's sort of a take on that. Birds keep attacking people basically LOL When I started it I had intended that it would be lighthearted, but........oh, dear....I fear my true character is being revealed instead ha ha....so far the death toll is up to four.....those parts were such fun to write too......I'm very ashamed of myself.....LOL LOL.....your book sounds much nicer!!!! x-)

LOL..I love a good mystery ...should be a quite interesting read knowing your way of writing and your creative mind...I am glad you are enjoying writing..it has always been very theraputic for me..Yes I have only seen the Birds movie..though, have not read the book.
