How cold!!!!???? Minus what???!!!!

Oh my it seems to want to get so cold!!! ..I have to wonder if this will be one of those winters like my Grandfather knew when the Columbia River froze over.
http://www.onthisdayinoregon.com/01_29.html
This is a little date item about it happening in January of 1890. It is a bit over due to happen again if we are in a 100 year cycle like we often do experience.

Here is another Wickepedia site that tells more about the Columbia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_River

It has been steadily getting colder and colder

The Bay is steaming this morning from the water being 38-39 degrees and the air being so much colder. It is called Sea Smoke…

And again it was steaming this morning the day after the above photo with the temps still very cold…Mt. Rainier takes on a look, to me, of days from the beginning of time.

My fish are locked into their little whiskey barrel home…
the two big ones..are now very still and not moving much at all and 5 smaller goldfish are quiet but will still wiggle a bit if I tap on the ice…

The birds seem reluctant to fly into the feeding tree yet..maybe after the sun is up a bit more…

The ice is sparkeling on my deck with some Hebes..hopefully doing ok at the edge there….The frost is from what moisture there is left in the wood being drawn out also what moisture there is in the air. I wore my clothes and my warm robe yesterday and will again today as I do my writing….

It is certainly winter now!

These little birds sure seem to be glad to be able to get in these bushes…I believe it is a relative of the Chipping Sparrow..but could not get a really good look…

It has given it to come cold here too,but hopefully, not as cold as where you live.Is that typical in your area at this time of year?

9 Dec, 2009

pleese no tapon ice-no good to fish-make stres - try cover half of pond wiht insulat -polystyreen or gwtaever- give htem place to hide an shelter

9 Dec, 2009

oh yes, an if barell above soil, hten insulat hte north side

9 Dec, 2009

I was going to advise against tapping the ice. the 'shock waves' hit their lateral lines. its a bit like someone slapping you on both ears !
at least the wood of the barrel will absorb alot of the pressure waves. Mud based ponds absorb nearly all the waves so breaking ice on those is ok.
our raised pond is brick and the far corner with the flag iris in always has a gap but i put a small soft ball in that helps keep a small ice free gap.

By heck it is chilly but beautiful all the same.

LOL...not to worry..I did not tap hard..barely touched it actually...and one of the small ones moved about a little..having worked on the water and with divers..I am aware how sound carries under water..LOL..good ideas Derekf..thank you...

9 Dec, 2009

I certainly wouldn't like it having temperatures as low as that, Cat - I'm a chilly mortal! Keep warm. :-))

9 Dec, 2009

oh sorry catfinch, didnt realise. many people are totally unaware of how sound waves travel. glad you know :o)

This is not typical weather for us no..we usually have some cold but not this cold. We are more often like much of England actually, with a very temperate climate..We can get the northern weather system out of the deep Canadian northeren area's or from Alaska easily enough but more often we have what we call a Pineapple Express from the Hawaiin Islands that keeps us humid and more temperate..the Northerlies seem to be winning out this year..should have known...the horses did..their winter coats began showing up in late August.

Sooo cold, but the photo of the Sea Smoke is amazing ! They do say events /climate go in cycles.Wrap up warm Cat x

9 Dec, 2009

Yes ..I was excited to get to take the picture of the Sea Smoke this morning..but Brrr...I have been putting on layers and layers...looser the better to give an insulation...I have heat but it does not matter when it is this cold..it just is not going to take the chill off the legs and feet when you are sitting at the computer with your back to the heat source...lol...the temp went up to 29 and is already dropping again now at 2:19 p.m. More blankets ...more blankets..come on doggies gather round...brrrrr...3 dog night tonight ...

We moan about our weather in England but how confused must your plants be to have some heat from Hawaii and then this cold!! Not for me - I dont mind a good frosty sunny day but dont like cold cold!! Keep warm!!

10 Dec, 2009

I actually like it to get cold, it is Winter after all and its good for the Spring plants. As long as the house is warm it can get as cold as it likes here seeing as we nener have extreme weather. :o)

i would rather it cold than rain and damp, get wrapped up its lovely,, but not quite as cold as you get it cat... brrr

Cat~ Love the picture of the Sea Smoke! Just amazing! I believe your weather is not only colder than normal for you, but is actually colder than it is here in Pennsylvania. We kinda missed the huge storm that flew across to the east coast the other day- only had a little snow and then it turned to rain. Today is quite chilly and extremely windy. About 30 degrees F and about 40 mph winds. I look forward to all four seasons. If I had the same temps for all 12 months, I would get bored. My husband went to college in Long Beach, California and said it wasn't uncommon to go shopping for a Christmas tree in Bermuda shorts and flip flops! That's not for me. I look forward to the cold but also the insulating snowfall for all my plants and worry when we don't get any or enough over the winter. Great pics and great blog! Lisa :)

great blog Cat ..is that the night time or day time temp on the thermometer???

10 Dec, 2009

Hi all..was for a little while today while I got my ISP all changed over to my new one...and it is still very cold..and I got another sea smoke shot with Mt. Rainier in it..will be putting it on this blog..the temps are still the same...cold and more cold and they are saying it is supposed to continue into next week..

The temp picture is in the morning Sandra and it was the exact same this morning as it was yesterday...brrrr....I am adding a little bird in the berries I got a shot of today too..I believe it is a little relative of a chipping sparrow..they are loving the berrie bushes off my back deck right now..a deer was in them this evening.

11 Dec, 2009

I hope it doesn't get too cold for you Cat. I hate the cold myself

12 Dec, 2009

It feels colder today Hywel..even tho has actually come up to almost freezing..the fronts are now bringing moisture and snow is expected by tonight or tomorrow...this moisture is making it feel more cold than the lower dryer temps did....I am bundled still and staying cozy...I like the cold in that I get to bundle up and sit in front of a cozy warm heater..lol..eat hot foods and lots of fruit as Dereck suggests... :)

12 Dec, 2009

Wow Cat..second photo of sea smoke even better than first ! As you say..looks like the beginning of time ....

12 Dec, 2009

The mountains have been so gorgeous in this cold clear weather...it has been great for photography...when I can stand to get out there!

13 Dec, 2009

Hi Cat, the sea smoke pictures are amazing. We have had nasty cold here too, add the 25 mph winds, it's winter for sure. Penetrates clear into thr bones of my house. Glad it isn't that bad all winter.
I'm with you Lisa58. I like the changes of the seasons, I like fall and spring best. And I like the snow. My least favorite is summer here in August when the temperatures soar to near 100 degrees.

14 Dec, 2009

We have been very lucky that the wind has stayed down...the least little breeze and you can sure feel it even more..the damp air that is moving in is bad enough...I am dreading the wind coming back...brrr...even tho the temps have come up it is almost worse soaking right into the muscles with the damp air and light breeze...I am getting too old for this..maybe that is the problem..lol..

14 Dec, 2009

At least here it is usually quite a dry cold. I know how that humidity can chill you to the bones. -11C here at the mo and a nasty wind blowing. Frost bite weather. Yuck.

14 Dec, 2009

We got about a half inch of snow last night- that usually happens when the weather is going to get warmer. Warmer means up to freezing. :-)
28 degrees F is optimum for snow here but that is not to say that it can't snow when it's colder or warmer.
The house finches at the feeder are all puffed out, like round balls of feathers with beaks and eyes. They are so cute. The geese are making v's in the sky...I don't know whether they are coming here or going south. Some of them winter here when the lakes and rivers aren't frozen.

14 Dec, 2009

I am loving the puffy birds here to ...gosh they are just wild flying and dodging snowflakes. lol..this morning here we had a smattering of snowflakes but everything is covered in a layer of ice...I decided to walk to the store for a few groceries..now that was an adventure all in itself...have a sore hip, thought a walk would help...did not fall but it did not help..and am now looking for David's old cane...have my walking stick but the cane is better. Dang...where did I put that cane after Iused it last.

14 Dec, 2009

What's going on with your hip? Hope it's better soon.
Ice is so much more treacherous to walk on than snow. Hope your weather gets back to normal so you can exercise a bit and get the kinks out .
Word is that we are getting measurable snow tonight.

15 Dec, 2009

Think it is the same pinch that gets my back.. Right hip is getting upset this time though....I must be walking wrong..

15 Dec, 2009

I guess you need some sensible shoes....the uglier the better, get rid of those stilletto heels, they look good but you can't hike in them. That's the only cure for a hitch in your get-a-long. Hope you're better by now.

16 Dec, 2009

It was the ugly hiking boots that did it..and the combo of the ice that got my get-a-long...lol...too much stiff and careful walking so as to not fall! There is a wee child in me that just wanted to have fun...and now the wee child is whimpering..while the adult is scolding about it...a bit better today..I managed to drive to the horses to feed...my friend who has Flash for me is flying off to Minnesota today for the holidays...so it is up to me and my cane..was actually good for it..not too much walking just enough...and I got to brush Flash a bit or at least knock the dust out of his fur a bit....rolling in the mud..! Can you believe it? silly horse..it has warmed up with a warm wind now and the mud was dried on his horsie hair...if it is still warm enough this afternoon..I may do some real brushing..mmmm...stilleto's...? yeah...the horses don't like those either..guess I may as well toss em...

16 Dec, 2009

Give Flash an eye rub for me. Mine were out there making snow angels this morning. By this afternoon it was more like mud angels. Typical Spokane weather -changing constantly. Freezing, blowing, snowing, raining -all in about a 24 hour period. Good thing the horses have thick winter coats.

17 Dec, 2009

Ours have nice thick coats too..they started getting them early this year..around the end of August believe it or not..the cold rain and wind is worse than the really cold still stuff..this morning out there there was ice on a few things and wetter cold ..brrrr...

17 Dec, 2009

I have seen Dan stand shivering in the rain and wind on warmish days. At first I thought he was sick, he didn't go inside though till I took him in and gave him goodies. That was probably his plan. :-) Works every time with every animal I have ever had, if they look the least bit pathetic, I put them in my bed. LOL

18 Dec, 2009

I know..cannot stand to see them cold..we have not blanketed the horses..they do good with out them, as long as they can get in out of the rain..and they can so they are happier this way and warmer too as their can get their furs to stand up better for insulation this way.
