Out it comes ……..If I never see a Privet hedge again,I certainly wont lose any sleep over it….. 32 ft, of densely planted( we always do the job properly) Privet hedge, there is just so much of it……8 ft tall and a good 2ft wide…
I am in charge of
painting, both sides of the panels, and cutting up the hedge so OH can take it to the tip, as we are no spring chickens we are taking it steady, although OH is using the axe like the Mad Axe Man to get the roots out (frightens me to death) he assures me he knows what he is doing.
Tonight we got another panel in, so now only three left, and at least the weather has been kind, except for the gale force winds, when OH goes off in search of his rubber hammer, leaving me holding the panel, precariously balanced on a gravel board, now don’t let it move says he, ha ha say I or words to that effect, you have got the picture!! so that is where we are at the moment, will keep you posted lol

Ohhh! Dotty, you tease! you've only shown one panel! You must have gained so much space, taking the hedge out, I can't wait to see it finished, it'll be marvellous!!

10 Oct, 2011
I love the fencing too..guess this not painted but that greenish shade looks wonderful. You lucky thing..when this is done you will have a wonderful, virgin stretch of garden to play with..Im greenly jealous!!

Dwyllis we needed something pretty, we might not be able to get it all planted in time for the opening next year, so at least it will be attractive to look at..
Libet so sorry it was nearly dark by the time we had finished, we did this panel yesterday,(when I took the pic) now calm down dear, yes we will gain a great deal more garden, what to do with it, now that's the question!!
Thanks Sticki, we knew it would not be easy, but at the end of the day I am sure it was the right thing to do...
10 Oct, 2011
Thanks Tet the fence had been treated but this is a stain and a preservative, it is guaranteed for 15 years, so it will see us out lol I keep changing my mind about what to plant where......would like to put the jungle along the back, OH would like to do away with the jungle altogether!! he has never been that keen!!
10 Oct, 2011
Oh dear DD, strong winds inside as well as out! LOL!
I must admit Im a flower girl myself, but I did enjoy your Jungle, doesnt do for us all to be the same and I am slowly being converted into growing all sorts of things these days that I wouldnt normally...all Meanie's fault!!!
10 Oct, 2011

10 Oct, 2011
I really cant..just not enough room to overwinter in the greenhouse..PLEASE dont tempt me! The poor thing will probably die!
10 Oct, 2011
indoor plant??
10 Oct, 2011
Yeah, I can just see it draped over the curtain poles..or maybe strangling me in my sleep lol!
10 Oct, 2011
All the way up the stairs, round the bathroom, down the stairs, out of the window and round your lovely new porch!?
10 Oct, 2011
I refuse to become Sleeping Beauty at my age! That would destroy my poetic image!!
11 Oct, 2011
You could be jack(ie) and the bean stalk, climb up and fetch the golden hen??
11 Oct, 2011
In yer dreams! Me? Climb? You must have memory loss!
Im going to bed before you invoke the classic "what trouble have you got me into now, Stanley!" {:-D

Good idea to get rid of that huge hedge. Fences will be less work for you - although I do like the look of a newly trimmed hedge myself (I haven't got one though lol)
11 Oct, 2011
I agree with Hywel. I too like trimmed and tidy hedges. If left unattended they look horrible.
I used to travel through an expensive area in east Finchley London to get to work and all houses had hedged boundaries. I wonder if it was a preservation area or only happened for all occupants to like it.
11 Oct, 2011
Dotty I must have missed your blog about removing the hedge, I see it was while I was away on holiday. I admire you for tackling that. I am impressed. What a lot of garden you will have to play with. I must say I am not a great fan of jungle look, but where you had it was ok. A nice water feature would be nice with the water tumbling down ? But nice tall flowers or climbers would also look nice. Love the fencing too.
11 Oct, 2011
wow that looks gud allready , carnt wait either ........... lovely !! now need to get back to clearing my garden urggg ...................... so much to do xx
11 Oct, 2011
looking great Dotty, mine green and i myself think its the nicest colour for fencing, i also love the trellis on top, love it, keep going but dont knock yourselves out and do it to fast. great choice ;o)))
11 Oct, 2011
I love the fence and the colour Sandra once the work is finished and you settle back to admire a job well done you will be forever grateful that you don't have to trim that hedge anymore , can't wait to see what you decide to grow there :o)
11 Oct, 2011
Even the thought of doing this makes me want to lie down!
Well done.
11 Oct, 2011
Hi Dotty ...
Good luck with completing the project... looking very smart so far :o)
11 Oct, 2011
It'll be worth it when it's all done DD. Love those fencing panels
11 Oct, 2011
Dd I certainly don`t envy you doing that job in the wind, they do look nice panels, bit different with the trellis work on the top...
11 Oct, 2011
Lincs another panel in today, so two to go.Sheilar glad you like the panels, and I am sure it will be worth it. Thanks TT, we are getting there.
Frybo that is what I have to do when I come in lol
Amy glad you and San like the colour, it is garden worthy and we liked the idea it had trellis on the top saved us from doing the job, it is hard work, but hoping to finish this weekend all being well. Thanks Cristina, will keep you posted, good luck with yours.
Cinders it looks better already without the hedge, we will have to re-arrange the jungle to make it look more attractive.
Costas you are right it always looked lovely when it was first cut, but it has ruined the soil, it is like sand and will need a lot of goodness putting back in to it.
Hywel I agree great to look at, but hard work to maintain.
Tet 100 dutch Iris.these I must see.....
11 Oct, 2011
DD, it is a hard job but well worth it in the long run, a lick of stain/preservative every 15yrs sounds good to me. All the more time to spend on the garden and whatever you choose if its as good as the rest of the garden then we know it will be delightful.
11 Oct, 2011
Ive just noticed the advert on the rhs for fence spikes. I was interested to stop the cats getting into the garden and poohing all over the place. Apparently you have to put up a warning sign in case of human intruders COS THEY COULD SUE YOU!!! Im speechless!
11 Oct, 2011
And so am I......whatever next?
11 Oct, 2011
They could win?
11 Oct, 2011
Oh Dotty, that's a BEAUTIFUL fence panel. You're going to be so glad you decided to get rid of the hedge and put this in instead . . . definitely worth all that hard work. This will be a lovely backdrop for whatever you decide to plant!
11 Oct, 2011
The panels are great Dotty. Lots of work but certainly worth it ..... we live and learn, the quick growing hedges look so innocent when first planted.
11 Oct, 2011
One half of me wants to get rid of our hedge, the OH wants to keep it for the birds!
11 Oct, 2011
Thanks Sheila, we are pleased we decided to take it out, hard work for us oldies....but looking forward to planting up the new border.
Dawn you are so right, it has ruined the soil, no goodness left at all.
Tet we had three nests in the garden this year, two in our boxes and one in the Honeysuckle, and there was nothing in the privet......I rest my case lol
11 Oct, 2011
What can I say? Pity us, we have a barrel load of sparrows and some dunnocks and they all built nests in ours!!
11 Oct, 2011
I'm playing 'catch-up' on blogs tonight, Dotty ... your choice of fence panels is perfect ... love the trellis tops and the colour ... well done to you both for removing the hedge! ... :o)))
