My story starts on the 15th of April, Harry and I were enjoying a relaxing half hour in the garden, when we noticed a Robin flying back and forth to the trellis fence division between our garden and our neighbours. We watched with interest and and saw that she/he was carrying worms and insects and each time disappeared inside the trellis opening.

The Trellis

Robin with a worm , [not a great picture but couldnt get closer so had to Zoom],

Stopping to check the Coast is clear! It only takes a couple of seconds to deliver the food before she/he is off again.

This is the entrance to the nest, very .well camouflaged with the Ivy

The following morning I couldnt wait to have a peep inside and there were 3 little chicks with their mouths agape expecting food. This is the picture I took, its not very clear but you should be able to make out one little chick and the beak on the right of the one in front.

Two days later a closeup, clock the hairdo !

Closer Still!

TODAY
“Im a big boy now, so Im off to explore the big wide world”;0)

“Hey wheres my big bruv gone? oooh looks scary out there”!!

“Well Im not staying here all alone” Bye!!

The Nest is empty, bring on the next batch;0))

It has been fascinating following the chicks development and I have learnt a lot from watching them grow over the last seven days.
I originally thought it was just the Mother who fed the chicks but the father shares this task too. Im amazed at how hard they work back and forth all day searching for food, they must be exhausted!
The next few days will be equally hard for the parents as they now have to protect them from predators, teach them how to fly and fend for themselves, must be very difficult if they are in different areas of the garden too!

It has been a very rewarding a interesting experience and although I am pleased they have survived so far, Im also sad to see them go. Good Luck little family.*

Well done Pansy, its amazing to see and I would have loved to watch as you have been able to do, I`m watching the birds here and its obvious they are feeding chicks but I cannot see into their nests as they are up high in my hawthorn amongst the ivy, good job really as its safer for them, as you know I do have cats, I hope they remain for a while in your garden for you to watch their progress....
Love the blog Pansy and well done with the pics..

There's a pair of blackbirds nesting in some leylandii in the garden at the back of ours and we've watched the parents going in and out the last couple of weeks. Yesterday, we saw a fat chick sitting on the fence while the parents were feeding it. Lovely sight to see but didn't get the camera in time. They've been out again today, but we didn't see any chicks this time, just the parents.

Two very busy robins here too. The minute I open the door one of them is there, waiting for something to eat. He/she follows me round the garden all day, sometimes only inches away. I think they must have a nest nearby but haven't spotted it, however I think two visiting magpies have because they seem to be here all the time.

22 Apr, 2012

Wow...you have given me such a treat seeing this. I have Robins going in and out my holly hedge all the time but I've been too scared to have a wee look - I might just have a wee peep tomorrow :)

22 Apr, 2012

23 Apr, 2012

You,ve done well to get such good photo,s.....it proved to me that I was right.....
The other day I went down to the gh (oh made it from windows and sliding doorfrom house so its quite big) and there was a bird in there fluttering about, I do leave a small window open, it flew ontothe shelving so I left the door open, later I went to shut the doorand heard rustling on the shelves so I just hoped it would be ok, next morning I went down, no fluttering so good its gone.....
Istarted to potter watering etc. Then realised that I was being watched by a tiny bird with a punk hairdo...just like yours........
All is quiet in there now but such a treat!

so im glad to see these lovely pictures carole ;o)))

You did a great job getting pics of them Pansy. Aren't they wonderful? I still have two tits in my nesting box...not sure if they are blue or great tits now...but I'm hopeful that they will manage to raise their brood. Sadly they are up very high so I can't get in to see what is going on. There is a window right beside the nesting box but I am even too scared to open it for fear of disturbing them! Lovely blog..it's such a joy to see them isn't it!

Sad to say that I had a good look in the hedge today but could not see a nest - however Jim next door has a really run down old shed right at the back of it - this may be where they are going. I would like to go in and have a look but it's so ramshackled that it is liable to fall in around me. I will continue to monitor :))

23 Apr, 2012

Hi Shirley Such an exciting time of the year there is such a lot going on everywhere, yesterday we watched a little Mouse for well over an hour taking leaves and twigs into a hole, it ran so fast at the end couldnt believe it , as it carried two little baby mice into the hole, think it was moving house ;0)

23 Apr, 2012

oh thats such a lovely story about the mice ~ did you ever read the beatrix potter story about two bad mice?

23 Apr, 2012

Isn`t nature wonderful and to be able to sit and watch the goings on of the wildlife in our garden is better than anything on tv.
Like you we have had a little mouse scurrying back and forth into a hole in the steps leading up to the archway, must try and catch a photo ~ must remember to leave the camera by the window.

24 Apr, 2012

Thanks Sticki I have read the Beatrix Potter story I am a
fan of hers;0)

Stroller Im so pleased to hear about your little mouse too, they are so cute, I have tried to get a picture but its to fast for me, could be a possible Olympic contestant lol

Hi Carole.
Lovely blog. Wonderful to watch nature at work. We have a couple of Robins here. Not sure if they are nesting behind the Camelia or at least nearby.
We have 2 bird boxes on the trellis near the house, and last year we thought we were going to have a family of BlueTits in one of them. Instead we had a swarm of Bees take over it, but this year the Tits are back and making use of the two boxes. Hubbies not sure if they are just stripping what the Bees put in there for their nest, or whether they are making two nests. We'll have to wait and see.

'Congratulations' on your new arrival. He's absolutely gorgeous.
I did try to make a comment when I read it the other night, but it wouldn't let me do anything, and I ended up logging back out.
I too am expecting a new arrival around 9th Oct. so my little gardening helper will be having a new little Brother/Sister to play with.
Love to you all and Baby. xxxx

24 Apr, 2012

25 Apr, 2012

What a lovely blog.... :)) so great to see nature on your doorstep like that.. those chicks are super duper cute!!! When they leave the nest you do wonder where they get to and if they are ok. The last couple of weeks I have been in the garden quite a lot - even in the rain... and noticed two blackbirds constantly flying in and out of our next door neighbours' conifers. The parents were too collecting worms and taking them in the nest and i could hear the babies little tweets then they were being fed...so cute. Then last weekend we saw two baby blackbird fledglings perched on the fence fluttering like mad practicing their flying skills...bless so heart warming to see... Saw the parents feeding the baby blackbird yesterday as they were pottering around the conifers/trees. They are becoming more brave now and venturing out... We must be lucky to have the opportunity to see them up close! :)

26 Apr, 2012

Thanks Beverley We are very lucky to be able to observe all the wonderful wildlife around us, I t must have been an heartwarming sight, watching the Blackbird chicks having their flying lessons. I havent seen either the baby Robins or their parents since fledging a few days ago, I do hope they are ok!

26 Apr, 2012

how lovely, wish I had a little family here too:-)

27 Apr, 2012

You probably have but there hiding amonst al your lovely plants;0)

28 Apr, 2012

My little Robins have not been so clever with this nest Pp...The nest is in a large Flower Pot, with a bucket which i put on top...The Bucket fell off today nest toppled over but, managed to rescue it....One of the babies fell out off the nest into my bin where i put all my cuttings before going into the Compost...I did notice, that it had fell out just, my instinct, made me look...I picked up the babe gently & put it back into the nest...
I noticed the Robins came back...Male & Female with food in their beaks, so must be feeding them again...Fingers crossed...

Such a great Blog Pp..You must have been delighted to have then nesting in your Haven...I am delighted, but will be glad to see them get bigger so they, can safely fly away from Predators & other dangers, to face their Adult life ...: ))

16 May, 2012

Wow Ba your little Robins are living dangerously, hope the one that fell out of the nest will be okay, sometimes the parents will reject them if they know that humans have had contact, but seeing both parents are still feeding yours it looks as though they will be okay. I loved having the Robins but I was a litlle concerned that the Magpie may have got them when they fledged as it was around in the garden and I havent seen any of the babies or their parents in the garden since;0( Its bad enough worrying about your own family without the additional worry over someone elses isnt it lol

17 May, 2012

I agree Pp..I am on tenderhooks, keep listening for the
pot falling over again...I have an idea, it was the cat
that caused it to fall...If i did not get there when i did, i believe there would be no Babies now...What a terrible thought Pp...:((

17 May, 2012

Fingers crossed all will go well ;0)

17 May, 2012

Lovely blog Carole.

26 Apr, 2014

Lovely to see this again. My daughter Boo, alias Rebecca, put up a little bird house a few months ago and has blue tits in it now! I've had mine up for a few years a not one interested client:-( I did everything recommended in the bird books, correct position etc ...maybe they didn't like the look of the landlord:-))

27 Apr, 2014

Thanks Alan thought it may interest you ;0)

Hi B,A. Pleased you enjoyed a second visit [no sign of anying there this year] I have also a number of bird boxe around the garden, I have had Blue Tits nesting in the past but not seen any takers this year to date!

27 Apr, 2014
