Warkworth Flower Show - Part one

Saturday 22 August…….a long awaited day…..Warkworth Flower Show…their 150th year….its held in the beautiful grounds of Warkworth Castle which is owned by Engish Heritage.

8.30am We left the house with the car carefully packed with goodies…

We arrive at the showground, prepare exhibits and “suss out” the competition in the dahlia class which I entered 3 vases. In the first pic are mine….the red shades…….

The other entries are – 2 vases of annuals – each a distinct kind i.e. Ageratum (was supposed to be sunflowers but they had gone over! and Sweetpeas “Mamma Mia”.. Second place for this.

Next another entry for annuals, Cosmos – Second place for this.

Then I put in two vases of mixed herbaceous perennials. One with the lilies in I got third place. The orange shades with dahlies was not placed.

After setting up we went home and I tried to do some potting up in the greenhouse; however I couldn’t settle and 12.15pm saw me setting off for the showground…..I forgot to add before, we had a beautiful warm sunny day….so I walked……..I made a beeline for the dahlias to find that one of my vases….the one with two peachy/yellow blooms (Amber Festival) and one red bloom (Karenglen) was awarded a third place in the class….I was delighted! The competition is pretty strong here for dahlias and one particular person has won everything in sight for years….I don’t know why he bothers to bring the two cups back every year…..he just has to take them home again!!!….so it was quite a coup to “pinch” a placing off him….lol

I’ve taken pics of quite a few first places, flowers and veg……but thats for another time!

Wowee Alice, you must be chuffed to bits, well done :)))))

I think your displays are beautiful and my favourites are the pink themed ones.

What a good feeling pinching that cup from the usual winner ;)

I am so pleased you got a place, hope you get to 1st next year, but like I said last time there is alway the one who always seems to keep winning which I find suspisous, it reminds me like be housed by the council, its as if you have to work your way up, or who you know, I have watched programs in the past about shows, and I don't think I am far wrong , they have their favorites.

all your hard work paid off AA :)))))

I know what you mean Morgana....was just discussing with hubby.....A NDS exhibitor who has been helping me said that one of the vases in a class was very poor and he would have left it at home...and it got a first.!!!!

Yes indeed Grindle :))))))) have to start thinking about next year now....lol

24 Aug, 2009

LOL and are you sticking with the Dahlias, or trying your hand at something else next year?

24 Aug, 2009

Sticking with the dahlias...only just got started......actually it really depends on whether I get that allotment!! cos it has not been an ideal situation this year having so many pots and standing them among other plants (in some instances on top of other plants!!) goodness knows what they will look like when I take the pots out.....I dread to think what I will find..........lots of squashed plants probably......:))

Well done Alice yes a real coup for you and what a beautiful setting.

Many years since been but guess the castle not changed much .. and no before anyone asks Knights were not still jousting when last went !

Amble marina , Alnmouth lovely by the estuary with the links when visited Alnwick Castle just removing the old glasshouses from the walled garden only seen pics of cascade ..anyone with a passion for fishing would love Hardys in Alnwick.

Beautiful area and oh those beaches ..

Ah...so you know us well!!!...you must come and see us some time!!! You are not far away......

26 Aug, 2009

Yes Alice a fascinating area steeped in history which really deserves to be known for far more than flaming Harry Potter ! That said suppose it helped restore the gardens at Alnwick Castle ...

My favourite story is that of John Paul Jones who during the American Wars of Independence ( thank god they won as cant imagine what it would cost our welfare system! )
single handedly launched an attack against us ..sailed all the way from US to attack small communities on our east coast.

and the rest they say...is history!!!

As regards HP and The Garden.....no...whatever money was made from filming at The Castle.....was for The Castle. The Alnwick Garden itself was a vision of The Duchess of Northumberland and the funding came from One North East and other bodies. by public and private donations.....The Duke himself is not a gardener! he only makes an appearance in the garden itself on formal occasions. He has a sweater, given to him by the Duchess, and a quote on the back says "don't talk to me about the bloody garden!"....lol
