A visit to a local iris nursery on 2nd June 2012

This nursery is only 4 miles from my home . It has a fabulous display garden but they only look good for 2-3 weeks a year when the irises are in flower (usually late May /early June depending on the weather)
There are literally hundreds of varieties and are all well labelled.
These are just a few of my favourites
I took over a hundred photos and they’re on my flickr photostream here with more information

What a fantastic sight Alan.....Iris are one of my favourite flowers, but as you say they don't last that long...it is great to see them en masse like this.

Yes. I spent a wonderful hour there today. It was a bit overwhelming. Normally I spend quite a bit of time getting my photos of plants just right but there were so many today I just snapped away!

They are such beautiful complex flowers Anchor. Sadly no room in our garden for them. There is amazing variety of colour and such perfect colours.

Thanks, Anchorman, for those lovely photos!
I love Irises, whether they be the tiny, bulbous ones that flower before winter is over, those that live on the edge of ponds & rivers or these real "show-offs" the German or Bearded Iris!
On Gerry's allotment we have 4 different plants flowering this year for the first time. We have several white ones as well as the purple one that has flowered every year I've worked on his allotment. I took a few photos of them last week but I really must get a close up of the individual flowers before they are over.

They really are spectacular in flower en masse. But I hate it when the foliage becomes brown and tatty - they look such an eyesore then. I can never make up my mind whether I love them or hate them. Thanks for posting the wonderful photos though

I know what you mean. irises are one of those plants that are fabulous for a week or two and then dull for 50 weeks!
I have a few in my garden but I tend to prefer evergreen very long flowering season perennials as they give such good value

After clearing up Iris roots in my sister in law's garden for several years, and resetting a few back......why punish myself? I used to ask, as I lugged the surplus into the car. So lovely ....but so much bother. If I didn't put some back there would be hints about taking them for my own garden!!!! As if....I agree Anchor nice long flowering Heleniums and penstemons for me.

Just looked at your Flickr pics. Pink iris P1010082 is to die for!
This place is in my diary for a visit next year. Reminds me of a holiday in France a few years ago at the height of the iris season - they were everywhere, absolutely stunning displays.

They're only in flower for 2-3 weeks so best to contact them first so as to avoid disappointment

Yep. Early May I start to look out for irises in gardens as I'm going to work. There's a particularly nice patch of very pale blue ones on the New Walk, near to Leicester Railway Station, that comes up year after year. I love the fact that the flowers are not long lasting - it makes them even more special.

I love Bearded Iris, does this nursery do open days in season, and if so what are they called please?
