Roses in May!

On Monday, 17th May, I had to go to the pharmacy to get my repeat prescription. I went by a route that I hadn’t been along in a couple of months when in the distance I saw something that looked pinkish/orangish. Incredulously I said to myself (well there was nobody else I could talk to!), “Surely they can’t be roses? In the middle of May???” But they were!!! And here’s proof:
I’ve never ever seen roses blooming in a garden in the middle of May before! The thing is also if you look at the flowers some are going over & are almost finished which indicates they must have been open for a least a week when I took these photos!!!
Has anybody seen roses flowering in the middle of May in a garden before?

You're in good company then, Sandygirl, you'll find it has happened to many people!
It's strange that after such a hard winter that roses should be blooming so soon!
When I still lived at home, back at the beginning of the 70s, I tried everything to try to get at least one flower by the time the Chelsea Flower Show came around at the end of May. I never got a flower before the end of the 1st week of June, if then! Yet I was very, very surprised to see that roses flowered before Chelsea in people's gardens when I returned to the UK after 19 years in Spain! You never, ever saw roses in gardens in May in the 70s! At least not here where I live. Perhaps it wasn't so rare in warmer, more sheltered areas of the country. I don't know.

PD, you have mistaken your months - it was April not May! Check out BeyondSpace - Meteorology.

May is very, very unlikely to go down as the warmest month. Unless we have a couple of weeks with temps in the range of 25C!
Treesandthings, I'd very much like to see a photo of your rose!
I've also seen the odd rose still open here at Christmas, but not this last Christmas!

No not last year - it was too cold. Most years my fuchsias are in flower until nearly Christmas but not last year for them either. I've found one with buds. I didn't realise it had any :o)

I've been along & seen your picture, it's a nice looking rose. Is it a new introduction?
Today I've seen many more roses open in different gardens. Almost every rose bush now has buds about to show colour on it. I have some miniature roses on my balcony & they have buds well advanced on them. :-) I also have a shrub rose, Fred Loads, which has semi double bright orange red blooms in big clusters. That shows no sign of buds for the moment. :-(

Hmm, no roses yet just buds covered in greenflies - aargh!
Actually, I was exagerating for effect there as there is one climber where you cannot see the buds for flies, but its neighbour and all the other rose bushes of whatever variety are free of the little devils. Is it a coincidence that this is the rose which gets so badly attacked by black spot that by the time I have taken off affected leaves, halfway through the season it is bald but still gamely flowering?
Have not seen any roses in bloom round here yet though.

lovely roses to balacony, everything seems to have been forced with cold winter then lovely spring ;o))

Felinfan, practically ALL the rose buses & climbers around here are in bloom! I have buds on my shrub rose "Fred Loads" on my balcony as well as on my miniature roses that live permanently on the balcony railing all year round.
I have been surprised by the great quantity of roses that have opened since the middle of May!

Nice pic Balcony the roses are early. We have one that has just some small buds on at the moment.

I don't think you live far from me but here many roses are already coming to an end! :-( There are still many more to come & with the cooler weather back for a time they should last longer.

Looking forward to seeing a new dark red rose flowering that our son and daughter bought us last week for our anniversary :-)
