Glorious Petunias!

What a lovely display balcony

You had some real beauties there! Love that red with the dark centre.has it been a good year for them? I've always avoided them because of our climate but this year I ventured and am thrilled with the result. Did you raise them from seed?

They have kept looking colourful all season for you. They make a lively display.
Mine always go leggy.

Good old Petunias. I think you can't go wrong with them
(Except when the slugs eat them) & they go on & on as long as they get a bit of sun. You have got a lovely display.

No, Stera, I didn't grow them from seed - on the one hand I have no space on the balcony to grow many seedlings & on the other, though I've tried once or twice I've had no luck getting them to germinate. Yet last year I noticed several plants flowering from self-sown plants around places the council gardeners planted out Petunias last year!

Good for you for giving them a try this year! This is my first year for about 5 or 6, the past few years I've had Begonias. I think modern varieties of Petunias are much more weather resistant nowadays. I remember 50 years ago a brief shower would ruin them for the summer. They would cling to the leaves & turn grey with Botrytis! 😞

Hywel, as Petunias form their flowers at the tips of the stems, like Fuchsia, to flower continuously they have to grow longer continuously! Even so the more modern varieties are much more bushier than 50 years ago as well as being more rain resistant.

Petunias are great plants for the summer, aren't they Feverfew? I hadn't grown them for some years & I was getting a bit fed up with Begonias - I think I had them growing on the balcony railings 3 years in a row! Even a good thing can become tiring after a time! Thanks for your compliment, too!

Drc726 WOW! Indeed! I got the idea of all white Petunias from seeing them outside of Wilcos on a display trolley! They looked so good together I thought I would make a "bold statement"! (Been watching too many gardening programmes I think! 😂 😂 😂)
