Daylily Blog

Here is my day lily journal – all the day-lilies that have bloomed in my garden last year and I hope to see again this year. Though I’ve lost many nice plants, day-lilies never fail to return even after the harshest of winters.
Grape Magic
Tiger Lily
Happy Returns
Frosted Vintage Ruffles
Stella D’oro
Bonanza
Crimson Pirate
And the cardinal is willing to wait around for the day-lilies too; so long as I keep his bird feeder full. (sorry about my neighbor’s messy back yard.)
New Daylilies
These day-lilies I planted last fall, but never actually seen them in bloom. I got them at “bargain basement” prices at a garden centre that was trying to liquidate its leftover stock. I started snapping up bare roots like nobody’s business. Here’s what the label said.
Pandora’s Box
Wouldn’t these be fantastic?
Pardon Me
Here’s another winner I’m looking forward to seeing in my garden.
Primal Scream
This, by far, is the largest day-lily I’ve purchased. Flowers measure over 6 inches across. Enormous blazing orange blooms with red & yellow undertones. Very appropriately named.
Well, that’s it for now. The blahs of winter are starting to wane. I hope you’re looking forward to getting out there in the dirt as I am. Happy Gardening!

Thanks Siris - Spring can't get here soon enough. The cardinal is a looker isn't he. I love when he comes to visit.

Now that proves what a smashing bird that is, I had to go back for a second look as the background hadn't registered with me..
Paul you have got me green with envy here, I didn't have any Daylilies before I joined Goy, now I have a few but you just made my wishlist grow yet again, they are gorgeous, I'm adding to my favs then I know what to look out for, thankyou for naming them as well....

Thanks Lin, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Before, I didn't realize how many I had because they bloom at different times and are widely scattered over my property. That cardinal has been a regular visitor for a couple years. He has a mate that is never far behind. They are one of the few species that mate for life. He's a pretty attentive daddy.

Thanks Julia & Steragram. It's getting very close to that time Julia. I'm going to plant my beets and carrots this week. They are cold crops and taste so much better when grown in cooler weather.
Steragram - I'm really looking forward to Pandora's Box. It's gotten many rave reviews online. Should be a winner.

I loved looking at your pictures, what a beautiful selection of lilies; and what would I give for a Cardinal to visit my garden. Although I think he may be somewhat lost if he did!

Oh, you. You have got me beat again. I am not really a competitive gardener, but some of yours are fantastic. Of course, as usual the pcs themselves are so good. I like the Pirate and Primal Scream. I haven't seen either of them. Your colors are so wonderful. I cannot get the reds... I thought you had a smallish garden, how can you have all those lilies? I will try to blog mine if I haven't deleted them. Thanks for your time and the Blog!

Thank you so much.

That is a very nice collection Bathgate. I cannot grow daylilies because you know who love them. They only like flowers and leave the leaves alone. I do have several varieties.... left by original owners of the house....and I keep them as a ground cover under my mature viburnums. They spread nicely.
"Your" cardinal is pretty special.

Thanks Klahanie: I'm sorry about the dear eating your daylilies. I enjoy all the different colors and styles - they bloom all summer long with little or no care at all. I think your crocosmias would be good companions so I planted some along side them. Looking forward to seeing them together. That cardinal is quite brilliant. He's a very welcomed visitor.

What a super selection of lilies Paul. Thanks for sharing the photos with us. I have one lily, a very small lemon one in the front garden.

Thanks Linda, they are super easy to grow and so forgiving. They just keep multiplying. I started off with just a yellow one myself.

Thank you. I'm glad you like them. I can't decide which one I like best, but when "Primal Scream" opens up, it's wow, get out of town!! :)
