The Northern Cardinal

The bright red male northern cardinal, with its conspicuous crest, is one of the most recognizable birds in North America. It is found abundantly through virtually all of the eastern United States in a variety of habitats, including suburban gardens.

The male Northern Cardinal is perhaps responsible for getting more people to open up a field guide than any other bird.

It is interesting to note that while the male is caring for his family his bright red color will change to a duller shade of brown and his appearance will be more like that of his female counterpart. This transformation of color occurs as a camouflage helping him to fulfill his duties as a dedicated parent.

They remind me of my summers spent in New England. They are so different looking to any birds we have here in the UK. Not having much luck with birds at the moment, beheaded blackbird chick found, then pigeon nest fell out of tree and now got magpies raiding bluetit nest. There's more drama in my garden then on the telly!!

wow, they are amazing colours aren't they.
and you have the blue bird too across there.
does it have a nice song too? I do hope so, it would be a shame if it just chirped.
