On May Day Monday,we decided to have a day out here, along with hundreds of others..but as it has such a vast parkland,it didn’t seem crowded.
The hall is a country park museum, with a collection of ceramics, glass and Old Master paintings. It also houses
the Regimental museum of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars,
Queen Mary’s Own and The Light Dragoons.Refurbished with help from The Heritage Lottery Fund,it shows the part played by the Regiment in many major battles, such as The Charge of The Light Brigade, and memorabilia dedicated to Lord Baden Powell.

As we have been here many times,we didn’t go into The Hall,as we knew the Rhododendrons would be out,so after a nice lunch at their cafe,we started our walk.We were not disappointed..

We then walked back towards the Hall,to look at this beautiful Wisteria, which is by the walled gardens, dating back to the 1760’s.It was in the process of being prepared for the summer planting,so nothing really much to see at the moment. There is an Annual event, celebrating the pear trees in september, which were first grown in the 18th century, and one of the greenhouses is home to the Cannon hall Vine, which was grown from a seed brought back from the Continent,by the original owner,in 1802.A cutting was exported to Australia, cult.ivated, and its descendants produce today’s fine Australian wines…cheers!

How would you like one of these in your garden. They were on display outside a little workshop,so if you want the Grasshopper,it was for sale at £ 250..!

And this was a mere £ 400.!

A view of the parkland, and the river,as we made our
way back.way back. There is also a working farm, and adventure playground, which is very popular with families, and school parties..and has been voted the best in the UK,a lovely farm shop and Deli shop too..so something for everyone here.

The White ‘blobs’ are actually Swans..Lol…and naming no names,I didn’t take this pic Lol.

Hope you enjoyed the walk..and one of the many nice things,Barnsley has to offer..despite a lot of negative publicity it gets…It is still part of a wonderful County..:o)

As you have probably noticed thats my idea of a grand day out Bloomer, I love to visit these places and this one looks a treat, those Rhodedendrons are gorgeous and the parkland with those views looks a beautiful place to spend a few hours relaxing..
They have sculptures like that at Burghley but way out of my bracket I`m afraid so I also admire and walk away..
Thanks Bloomer i enjoyed the walk......

Glad you enjoyed it,Lincslass..we go quite often. There is a nice little garden centre too,but I remained firm..:o)

Thank you Hywel..it is a lovely place, and there is nothing wrong with Barnsley,or its people...but the media sometimes portrays it differently..they obviously don't know much about the area..so you just put it down to ignorance...

I couldn`t make the day out myself Bloomer but I enjoyed sharing your treat. Makes me very envious when I see Wisteria like that I have a white one and a pink one - well thats what it said on the labels - but neither of them have flowered, still only been waiting about 3yrs.

Will tell my youngest about this place as she is going to start work in a special school in Barnsley in September, she would love that park.

Oh,Dido,if only we had known..that would have been lovely to meet up.:o)
Thanks 6d.it is very popular at any time of year, and hopefully,we will go again, sometime in the summer, when all the bedding is in flower.
Thank you,Annella..I liked the Butterfly too..it must take a long time to make something like that,so I suppose that reflects in the price...If ever I come into money..there I go,dreaming again .Lol.
Glad you enjoyed it,Stroller..The pic didn't do it justice,as the light was so bright,so it looks a bit wishy washy..but still lovely..:o)
Your daughter will probably visit there,Olive oil,as lots of schools visit, especially children and adults with special needs .We shared a table in the cafe at lunchtime, with some older adults, with learning difficulties, and their carers, and they were really enjoying their day out..we had a good few laughs with them..:o)
Thanks Mariek,it is a lovely view from the Hall..and there is a lovely walk on the riverside too...what was wrong with your spelling,Mariek..it looked fine to me..did you edit it later? ..Lol.

Yes,that would be nice..I am ready as far as looking forward to the holiday, but am just starting to wonder what to pack!..I hate that bit..always take more than we need, don't we? such as'just in case' clothes,! Going to check 10day weather forecast this weekend..but I don't take it as gospel..I have got most of my plants in,but just in case I don't get the rest planted out,,my next door neighbour has offered to look after them for me..so that's one thing I was worried about..bless her :o)

What? Another beautiful stately home in Barnsely area! You are so right Bloomer! Barnsley gets an awful bad press and yet there it is in your pics and Mums of Wentworth Castle. Beautiful! We used to go on Boxing Day to see the hunt at Wentworth village and have a walk and it was lovely! I've not been in the actual town (well not within memorey anyway!), but the people of that part of Yorkshire are lovely, and whenever I hear a Barnsley, or any Yorkshire accent (there are lots of them in Carnoustie actually, loads of incomers from N.England here, including me of course!) I always want to chat to the person...that accent, it makes me feel like I'm home for some reason, and any lady with a S.Yorkshire accent immediately puts me at my ease! Funny isn't it, how an accent can affect us so?

12 May, 2011

I agree,Karen..and although we are in West Yorkshire, all areas have their own distinct accent...and Barnsley,South Yorkshire ,is different from ours..I love all the dialects we have, and all over the country too..Someone local has written a book, about them,to preserve for the future,as the younger generation don't use it much anymore..but the older ones do..such a shame, but that's how it is..I am like you,I recognise the S.Yorkshire accent as well.especially if we are on holiday..so its usually a
conversation starter .:o)We have been to Wentworth, but not to the Castle..great garden centre there.! Sounds like another visit will be forthcoming..I didn't know your mum had got pics of it,I must have missed them..so will take a look...Thank you for your nice comment..:o)

12 May, 2011

You're welcome Bloomer....San, isn't that just the way of it with hols? Still, the effects of the rest will have stayed with you.

12 May, 2011

thats true karen but wish i was still in that sunshine i feel cold back home lol

12 May, 2011

San, it has been cold here the last few days because of the wind. It's sunny and back to how it normally is during May. Good side to that is spring continues on for longer, but I agree, I don't take kindly to having to wear bedsocks again!!

13 May, 2011

Brr.its quite chilly here tonight too..got the fire on..!

13 May, 2011
