Not just plants here...

Last Sunday,we called in at a little privately owned garden centre, very high up in the Pennines, above Holmfirth. We have had a lot of things from here over the years, and seen it progress from weekend sales only, and mainly summer bedding..if they grow well here, they will grow anywhere..and they do !Anyway,I thought you would like to see what they have ,besides plants, and the beautiful surroundings..For a start, these two little beauties..they are awaiting names in a competition for children..aren’t they just gorgeous?

This pond has been the home for two Black Swans, for a long time..and now they have babies…

There are many species of ducks that migrate here, too, and some of them, call it home now..
Right, after having a coffee overlooking the pond,it was time to move on.
This is the cash desk! no need for anything fancy here..always been the same..

and this is what they do best!..Most of these are orders for miles around,..Pubs,Hotels,etc,and of course, people like you and me..lots for sale as well..I’m glad I don’t have to prick out,all those bedding plants! Every plant has either a pink or yellow label,to denote whether it is a trailing or upright one..and every kind you can think of,and colour..pretty good eh?

This is a smaller area of shrubs ,etc, but is expanding yearly..and another lovely view ..

hope you enjoyed your tour ,and it didn’t cost you anything..see how much I saved you! :o)

Such lovely pics Bloomer, the black swans are beautiful. Is that the 'Last of the summer wine' Holmfirth?

Looks like my kind of garden centre :-) I've learnt something from your blog, black swan signets are grey just like their white cousins..

Ohhhhh...Bloomer....sweetie shop!! It's just like the best pic'n'mix, how on earth did you choose anything? It's really inspirational for colour combinations, fab place, and a wee cuppa as well, just great! Love the swans, I haven't seen a black swan in real life yet, must get out more... ;0)

Thanks Michaella..you would have had a field day..certainly a place for Plantaholics :o)

Cheers Annella..aren't the Swans gorgeous ? Yes,it is 'Summer Wine'country..we used to recognise a lot of the places where they filmed..its only 20 minutes by car from us..

glad you enjoyed it Karen, thank you..I can vouch for the coffee..and all the other goodies I won't mention ! Lol.

Thanks Kfunsters..the Cygnets are quite big now,but just as adorable..One of the Black Swans went missing a while ago.and the owner was frantic..it was in the local paper, and they asked the public to watch out for it..It then turned up all by itself, but no one could fathom out why it went,as it had never done it before...must have had a tiff with its mate..but looks like they made up ! :o)

Everything you could ever need for the garden,Pam..and home made food as well!..and there is another lovely garden centre with a tearoom and Restaurant,,about 5 minutes walk away !..we are very well catered for in them thar hills! Lol.

Are you still drooling, libet? so you should :o).I didn't buy anything, can you believe..but its early days,so when we come back from holiday next week..will probably go again..almost certain,in fact..glad you liked it,I could just sit and watch those Swans and babies all day..:o)

Bloomer that is a fabulous place, all those plants and the pond area is great, I`d be there for hours, I cannot resist ducks and swans, the only place I`ve ever seen the black ones are at Papworth Hospital a few years back.
Smashing photo`s, thanks for sharing even though you`ve made me envious.( Sigh )

Thank you,Lincslass..it is a picturesque place..and the Swans are so graceful..the nest they built is huge,at the side of the pond..they have been there for as long as I remember..so they must live to a good age..

13 May, 2011

What a well organised place and so many plants etc. I bet you found lots of plants to take home, didn't you ?

Happy gardening.

13 May, 2011

Thanks Mariek..I found lots of lovely plants..but didn't buy any..!I will probably be going after our holiday..if there are any left!

13 May, 2011

What a lovely place to go plant shopping, Sandra, with views like that. The Black swans are so serene, I've only ever seen them at Wildfowl & Wetlands reserves and love seeing them with their young. Your willpower is still going strong as no plants bought! : o )

13 May, 2011

Thanks Shirley..Glad you noticed how strong willed I was..Don't think it will last, when we get back.!
how are the Echinops doing? mine have grown well again..Your Malva's and Osmanthus are doing great..:o)

14 May, 2011

They're ready to be planted out now, Sandra, two of them seem to be surging ahead of the others! Glad the Malva and Osmanthus are thriving. I'm going to put my two Osmanthus in the front gravel garden, close to the wall, as I've seen the loveliest one growing up against a garden wall along Mum's road. It's the same South facing aspect, so they should grow well. Quite chilly down here, clouds in the blue sky but still no rain. A light shower is forecast for 4 o'clock but I'll believe it when I see it ... lol!

14 May, 2011

Oh my god, if I am allowed to say that, where is this place Bloomer, I want to go to it, ask Russel to send me directions please, it looks fab.

14 May, 2011

That's good,Shirley..they will really thrive when you plant them out..they are very hardy,so no problem..My Osmanthus is south facing too.so looking forward to it growing even better then :o)We have had some heavy showers today, still very windy, but at least there are sunny intervals..good growing weather, but glad I staked my delphiniums, and a few others,as I have been caught out before, with the strong wind blowing them down...don't you just hate that, when they are ready for flowering?Hope you get your shower..:o)

14 May, 2011

Yes you are allowed,Yorkshire..Lol..So,you don't trust me to give you directions then ?..:o).you are very wise, although i am usually the navigator..when I am in the car..but Russell is much better at explaining..It is at a place called Totties, between Holmfirth and New Mill,if you know the area, but I will ask him when he gets home.and will send you a PM...you will love it there..

14 May, 2011

Great, wish it was near me. On second thoughts I don't , cos I would have to dig up my lawn !! Nowhere left to plant now.

14 May, 2011

Lol,Cinders,I know the feeling..:o)

14 May, 2011

I love these kind of garden centres....unpretentious and lovely surrounds....not all sanitized and commercially "in your face"...and a tea room overlooking a pond just completes the enjoyment.

I can imagine you are looking forward to your next visit after your holidays...you have shown restraint on this trip for sure...lol

15 May, 2011

I know what you mean,Jacquie..and not selling everything but the kitchen sink..just Gardening stuff. He started off just doing bedding plants for the summer,at weekends,as he had previously worked at one of our big Engineering companies..He was made redundant,a long time ago, along with hundreds of others, and this was his opportunity to use his redundancy money,so this is the result of all his hard work..Well deserved too,and nice he was able to follow his love of Gardening. How lovely,to do what you love best....:o)

15 May, 2011

:) A nice place to visit with such wonderful views, and a coffe shop. I wouldn't like to do all that repoting etc lol.

16 May, 2011
