Not a gardening blog, but I have included some flowers, trees, and scenery along the way..:o)
A few weeks ago,it was Russell’s birthday,so we all decided to take him on a surprise day out ,on The Keighley ,(pronounded,Keithley)Worth Valley Railway,or KWVR ,as it is known.. He used to be a Fireman on the steam trains, till Dr Beeching ,in his wisdom ??,decided to close most of them down.It was our Grandson’s first experience too.
We joined the Vintage train at Ingrow station, where there are two wonderful museums, housing Historic carriages, beautifully restored, and many TV and cinema productions have been featured from this museum.
Our train, for the interest of any enthusiasts,is a
957(BR 52044).a former Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway class25,which were known as “Ironclads”,after the Battleships being built ,when it was introduced in 1876.
Withdrawn from service in 1959,it came here in 1965,and starred in the film " The Railway Children" as The Green Dragon .It was restored to full working order in 2001,for the first time in 25 years, after a £150,000 overhaul.
So sit back, and enjoy a ride in a wooden bodied carriage ,on the outward journey as far as Howarth, home of the Bronte Family, where we got off,and caught a different train to other stations, along the route. We could hop on and off as often as we wished..so we did!
Here we are,in the lovely old ticket office,
Now,how did they know he was coming ?
Remember this?
Here it comes..a lovely sound, and so many memories of going on holiday, and the excitement of the train appearing..even though it was only as far as Blackpool..!
All aboard..we had a carriage to ourselves, and there are no corridors on this one..you will notice,we knew our place..
The old suitcase..so heavy to carry,..no easy wheelie ones then !
Thomas was very apprehensive at first, but soon got over the noise and all the steam..:o)
through some pretty scenery towards Howarth..
We got off at Howarth,to have a browse around the station, and wait for another train to take us back to look around the two wonderful museums,on Ingrow Station.
We decided against walking up the very steep hill to Howarth itself, with a pushchair in tow,but we have been many times before..so,with a cheery wave from the Train driver, and Fireman,we watched ,as it made its way back..I can’t imagine Russell in the uniform, and how he used to shovel all that coal !!
Howarth Station..
Time to catch another steam train back now,a more modern train, with tables,..and licensed :o)..cheers!
erm,excuse me young man,you have your own juice..that is Daddy’s !!
Grandad and his shadow :o)
A wonderful day out,and as you can see,Russ enjoyed his birthday treat..a good pub meal on the way home, and a nice end to the day..
.and so did Thomas..with his “Thomas the Tank Engine” Flag…:o))

Thanks Louise, glad it brought back memories for you..you should move back ! Love this blog, Sandra, but what was Virol? ... A tonic of some sort I guess? ... Thomas looks so happy ... though a little unsure of the ale! ... I used to love seeing the steam trains going under the footbridge at the station ... when all the smoke would hide the bridge for a few seconds! ... Daft memory to have .... say nowt! ... lol!
31 Aug, 2011
That was wonderful Sandra. I'm pleased to see you all enjoying, and especially Thomas. It's nice for kids to see the old steam trains. They're enchanting :o)
I remember going to Howarth years ago when I stayed with my cousin who then lived in Keithley. It's beautiful round there.
I remember that aswell Shirley. It isn't daft at all - just brings back happy memories :o) I used to stand on the bridge and get engulfed in the smoke - now that IS daft :O
31 Aug, 2011
Thank you,Shirley..I never tasted Virol, but had heard of it..sounds like a tonic, doesn't it ? probably for the upper class who could afford it..! we had goose grease for a bad chest, digusting red sage tea..and Fennings fever cure..and you probably never heard or had those either..Aren't you glad, you are a lot younger?? :o)Don't be fooled by the 'Ale ' look..he was awaiting his chance to dip his finger in! :o)..eeh,bah gum,lass...tha's talking Yorkshire talk..( say nowt ? ) it's catching, tha knows ! LOl.
31 Aug, 2011
Lol, Hywel! ... Occasionally the Pullman train passes through ... the one where each carriage has a name ... always fancied a trip somewhere on it! ... :o)))
Sandra, a neighbour of Mums met a lad from Skipton, down South, many moons ago ... went on to marry him and raise a family oop North ... when she rings to ask after Mum she always talks about her parlour ... that'll be Paula then ... lol!
31 Aug, 2011
Thank you,Hywel,so glad you enjoyed it..it's nice to do something different for a change..We all seem to have great memories of steam trains, don't we..but it was our childhood,so we remember the things we loved..and try to forget the not so good times..I used to love the smoke too..and we were covered in black sooty bits, weren't we ?
Mind you, living amongst the mills,it was the norm for us ! Lol...Keighley,is a good base for lots of places,as so near the Yorkshire Dales..so mostly we pass through,on the way there..
31 Aug, 2011
HaHa,Shirley..tha's right there..I will think of that if I ever meet a 'Parlour.'..oops Paula !.There is a trip on a Steamer advertised here at the moment...to go to Scarborough on it..we kept wondering about it..but think its when we might be going somewhere..shame really..
31 Aug, 2011
Is it the paddle steamer 'Waverley', Sandra? ... I have seen that sailing off Worthing to Brighton ... a sight to behold ... :o)))
31 Aug, 2011
No,Shirley ,its a Steam train..no water involved..well,there is the steam ! Lol...sorry,I should have made it clear..my fault..Sounds really good though..:o)
31 Aug, 2011
Another senior moment from me ... now I'm laughing at the thought of a huge paddle steamer sailing through Yorkshire countryside ... lol! ... Off to make a coffee ... need caffeine I think! :o)))))
31 Aug, 2011
To be honest,Shirley,I thought you were winding me up..but as I promised earlier to try and be a good girl today..I didn't retaliate,in my normal way..!! Lol.Go and get your coffee,girl..and NOT decaff..you need something !:o)))
31 Aug, 2011
Glad you had a lovely day Bloomer and Thomas is a beautiful little boy...:>)
31 Aug, 2011
Thank you,Moti,it was great...We are both watching our special little boys growing up fast, aren't we ?
Something new every day :o)
31 Aug, 2011
Steamer - lol - I thought it was a ship aswell, like Shirley did :o)
The Balmoral sails from Swansea to Ilfracombe. I went on it once years ago.
We haven't got trains near here :o((
3 Sep, 2011
Sorry,Hywel..I should have written the correct name.Lol.
I can just imagine a Steamer (ship) going across country to Scarborough..I've never been lucky enough to go on one, sounds nice.I saw the one Shirley was talking about on TV,the other night...lovely..:o)
3 Sep, 2011
Great minds think alike, Hywel! ... :o)))
3 Sep, 2011
Now you are extracting the Michael,Shirley..and not a reference to your OH either..:o)).I will let you off, after all the hassle I have given you lately !! Lol.
3 Sep, 2011

3 Sep, 2011
Have fun . . . . :o)))
3 Sep, 2011
We did, till 8.30..and all tucked up in his travel cot..out like a light..has a bit of a cough though,so we gave him some honey and Glycerine..so,hope he sleeps through..for our sakes as well!
3 Sep, 2011
Oh dear, I hope he feels better soon ... and trust you don't have a restless night! . . . . .
3 Sep, 2011
He has had it a few days now,but not as chesty as he was..so he will be ok..He is fine in himself, and still eating well,so just one of those things..they just take their own time,to clear up..doesn't matter if he wakes us up,we don't have to get up for work..I feel a nod coming on,sometime tomorrow afternoon !
3 Sep, 2011
Nothing new there then! ... :o)))))
3 Sep, 2011
Very true,Shirley..if we aren't going out,I enjoy my power nap,as I prefer to call it,after lunch..just half an hour, and I'm fit to face the world again..they just aren't always ready for me ! :o)))
I think there is only you,me and Pixi,on here tonight !
something we said?? Lol.
3 Sep, 2011
