Why didn’t I think of taking a pic before ? Duh !
Hope it is the right one,I remember making these too..a good recipe for children to try..and Adults.! I think I might
make some again..ah,Nostalgia :o))..As there were no Fan ovens then,I imagine it would be about 150 degrees,equivalent..Enjoy ! :o)))
PS..you will probably need two baking sheets for this amount,as if I remember rightly, they do spread out a bit.

Look at the state of my book ! very well used and front cover, long gone….I have had it about 30 years, and my mum before me,for as long as I can remember..

I was given a 'Be-Ro' book by an old friend, its brown & cream, in pounds & ounces And pounds & pence, 21st edition but sadly no date, my current copy is all colour and 39th edition!

13 Sep, 2011

I have a feeling that mine had a blue and cream cover,Pam.Wish I still had the price and date on it.
I also have a McDougal's paper back cookery book,( remember that flour ?) that belonged to my late Aunt..but I have never used recipes from it.I must seek it out..it's packed away in a box somewhere, and that is intact..Not as well used as mine, but she didn't do much,as I remember..

For all of you that have already seen this, and added it to your Favourites,I have just added a PS...saying that two baking sheets would be better,as they do spread out a bit..sorry for that, but you may not go back to look at it again..although it doesn't state it on the recipe..

13 Sep, 2011

far too sweet for me..but great blog

13 Sep, 2011

Well,everyone..I decided to do a test run,and made some after tea..and the camera can lie..!! They look really nice, but so small, and nowhere near as big as they look in the recipe book!I shall need at least 3 or 4 to eat with my cuppa..they don't spread much at all,and I followed the recipe exactly. If I make them, again,I shall make the balls bigger, and maybe about 15 instead of 20.. you are now forewarned, so you know what to expect...Shall I post a pic, before we eat them ?

13 Sep, 2011

Hmm Bloomer, are you leading us up the garden path with your sizes..I think you should sent a pic, then we shall see who's a bit of a piggy or if they are small. LOL

13 Sep, 2011

Not at all,Granny b..I tell it like it is..but I will show you how big they are..not much bigger than a50p piece! :o)
I will take one now..hang on a mo.!

13 Sep, 2011

Done...on pics! :o)

13 Sep, 2011

I used to make these when the family were chidren, they never had time to even get cold, now I`m hungry....

13 Sep, 2011

Shame you don't live nearer ,Linclass,I would bring you some..were yours small too,or did you just make less than the 20,it states, from the same amount of mixture?Maybe yours were from a different recipe book..

13 Sep, 2011

14 Sep, 2011

I hadn't any oats left..the birds ate it! so dipped mine in coconut..but oats is good!think that is the *C* Pixi meant !Lol....I can't believe the recipe book is selling for that..
Perumably in better condition than mine....I wouldn't be tempted though..sentimental value.:o)..might have a look at the" Mcdougall "lone though..not ever looked on these sites,so not sure how you go about it...

14 Sep, 2011

If you are interested in a book...just google it..Amazon is sure to be one of the first offering it, they are so easy to buy from, but I won't be paying £35! :-) Still don't get how adding c.......means oats Bloomer lol...Pixi where are? Just found the recipe book that we wrote in for cookery lessons when i was 11 !!
the recipe for melting moments is similar

2½ oz lard
1½ oz margarine
3 oz caster sugar
½ egg
5 oz self raising flour
Few drops vanilla essence
1 oz oats or coconut or cornflakes

Pre-heat the oven to gas 4/350 F
Beat the lard, margarine and sugar in a bowl until creamed
Beat in the egg and vanilla essence
Stir in the flour and mix thoroughly
Roll into balls about the size of walnuts
Place on a greased tray with enough room to spread
Sprinkle the oats/coconut/cornflakes onto the balls and put in the oven for 15 – 20 mins.
Take out and decorate with cherries when cool
Makes 12 - 15

14 Sep, 2011

OK, where do I find half a chicken to lay half an egg? Glad I didn't bother to keep my old school 'Domestic Science' book! Does Soused Herrings float anyone's boat? Yuk! Not that I'm against fish - love it! But Soused Herrings!!!!!!!!!

14 Sep, 2011

Oh that BeRo book - I still have mine, and somewhere I think I still have my mother's. I don't think anybody would give even 50p for them as they have seen a lot of life. Our kids used to like the coffee kisses too. (So did I...)
