Fab blog as always.

Thank you for the kind comments ..this the beauty of inheriting a truly neglected garden all the birds think they own it ! They ve had years to establish there own patch and honestly when sit by the pond after a few minutes they behave like not there. ( or should that be not all there ? )

So Dottydaisy to answer your question they come to us and as you can see in photos literally bathe and eat by our feet.

Now is a good time to catch them as most get bolder with increasing competition to feed their young .The mistle thrush will almost pose for a fruit scone ..we ve decimated local stores for those past their sell by date .

Eventually you learn that many have favourite perches and routines so focus on a rock or branch they often use rather than chase them round the garden like I used to try and do !

Thats how they get those stunning shots of Kingfishers for example as they often return to the same perch ..

ah BB that was a fantastic blog, i really enjoyed it
xx

6 May, 2009

Thanks Eileen .. sorry about your magpies our rooks have their uses no magpies or jays here the little ones quite happy to feed alongside them and nest too - so rooks cant be that bad can they ..

As ever BB, perfect photos, punchy captions and I love the way you have created the pond with the birds in mind, they love it don't they - you have thought of everything.

7 May, 2009

Thankyou Dawn for your lovely comments. You know this pond is becoming so popular, that even the fledglings are congregating around it now. Best thing done in garden, and we get hours of pleasure watching the activity !

7 May, 2009

Thanks for that BB will have a go....

I was very happy "listening" to your conversation with your visitors. i have tried to take photos of our few birds who come to feed on the foods which I supply but never have I been succesful in getting a clear picture. I will take your advice on board and just sit and wait with camera in hand as I watch the fish lazily swimming round. We do get birds coming for a dip but like the fish that "got away" I haven't any proof yet. Can I say "Watch this space".

ca you tell me name of bird with spots on wing tips and red skull cap? We spotted a couple in our front garden and didn't recognize them. Thanks will be very grateful. Sue

8 May, 2009

Hi Grannysue well at least with digital cameras it doesnt really matter how many goes you have ..I remember once tyring to get a shot of a Puffin and obviously needed him to turn sideways to get a shot of that colourful beak.. two rolls of film later I got one decent shot !

As regards your bird with a red skull cap the two I know of that may fit your description are a Linnet and Lesser Redpoll ..both small birds about goldfinch size . A Redpoll has a black bib under its beak although shy and elusive both are reported to be widespread .

Hope this may help if you have any further details about size or overall colour might be able to narrow down further.

super blog bonkersbon, what a pleasure your garden must be with all the comings and goings

8 May, 2009

Dear Bonkersbon
Thanks for that info much appreciated. I have looked on line and came up with the conclusion that it was a Goldfinch but as the two birds only stayed a couple of minutes I didn't get a clear shot on camera. We live on a main road and a bus came past and scared them off. We never see many birds as we only have a small town garden so usually only get the usual few faithfulls.

9 May, 2009

Oh right Sue - sorry when you said skull cap I was thinking on top of their heads , theres a pic of a goldfinch on this blog does it look like what you saw ?

9 May, 2009

Another great blog BB. Your humour is just as I like. I've done quite a few 'alternative' holiday albums over the years with captions so may have to start again when the new 'Lumix' arrives!
