What is this life if full of care ..

We have no time to stand and stare?

No time to stand beneath the boughs ,
And stare as long as sheep and cows . Leisure by WH Davies.

Had to travel to Middlesborough last Monday – no direct route so may as well take the scenic option across North York Moors . Driving through this daily often forget what beauty we have on our doorstep ..we really are so lucky so hope Ok to share with you .

Passed Whitby Abbey ..raining hard on moor tops with a sea fret clouds began to part as we approached ..

the lovely fishing village of Staithes.

Tranquil now but high tides and winter storms and the tiny RNLI lifeboat ..when we remember those who have served and fallen also poignant to reflect on those who volunteer to save others putting themselves at great risk.

So picturesque wherever you point your camera seems to capture a nice scene so forgive me if I got a little carried away ..

You can probably imagine what this would look like in the height of summer ..Staithes is also on the Cleveland Way so popular with walkers too .

A young James Cook served his apprenticeship here before moving to Whitby .. Staithes could claim to know him before he got famous ..

The inscription above door says Captain Cooks cottage ..poetic license perhaps as so many things named after him including local hospital .

In fact on his first expedition to Australia named Botany Bay after finding many different species of plants ..those with latin name Banksii named after Joseph Banks the Botanist who accompanied him.

Promised Jane lunch ..so called at the Cod and Lobster over looking the harbour..

Prawn sandwiches £6
Cod and chips £10 – and the law mushy peas of course ..illegal to serve without them here ..
Lobster £25 ..gulp

Perhaps a little harsh as we are talking huge portions straight from sea to plate..the sandwiches are bagettes about a foot long !

then a real bonus ..closed Mondays ! That ll be snap again then .. phew that was close .. could feel moths begin to panic in wallet ! ..again.

Time to go …

With special thanks and gratitude to those who serve and raise funds for RNLI. For those in peril on the sea …

We headed home across Fylingdale moor as sun was setting ..

For Morgana and Bornagain who asked to see a few more pics ..

beautiful--I am very fond of the area and the photo's are very good
I understand the folk 'down south' don't eat mushy peas! don't know what the're missing!

17 Nov, 2009

Good blog BB, enjoyed the trip, lovely photos, food sounded good....fish and chips straight from the sea....but you can keep the mushy peas! Yukly.....!!

17 Nov, 2009

Oh yes we do eat mushy peas down here - well I do - but then I was born in the North so maybe that's why.
Lovely photographs BB.

17 Nov, 2009

I love the blog very nice scenery and town, very interesting

17 Nov, 2009

Reduced to tears, BB. No matter HOW long I live in Scotland I will NEVER forget my roots! I AM A TYKE!!!!!

I remember traversing Fylingdales Moor on my way to beautiful Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay, years and years ago......I remember picking up a VERY big pebble on the sands at RHB and taking it home with me ( and it's still on our doorstep, 27 years later! )....I remember buying my 'Trumwin' bat ( see my Hallowe'en blog ) at Whitby Abbey back in the early 2000's....I remember.....I remember....

Mushy peas.....a staple of my old Yorkshire life.....honestly, I could practically LIVE on these! Soak them right, boil them right, season and sweeten them right......food of the Gods!!!

Thank you so much, BB, for making me wonder ( not for the first time ) why I ever left my beloved Yorkshire.

17 Nov, 2009

~we have mushy peas too!you never forget your roots Brenda!

17 Nov, 2009

Thank you .. cant stand mushy peas ? Pg couldnt eat fish and chips without them..
Aw Bscott what part of Yorkshire ? You may recall the giant Golfballs on Fylingdales the early warning station these now been removed.

Think of yourself as doing missionary work .. a great many Scots live here used to have weeks holidays here when factories closed.

17 Nov, 2009

Another masterpiece BB. (Make sure he takes you back next week Jane .. those moths deserve to be freed !! lol) Mushy peas are very much on the menu in Brum too ! Wonderful, wonderful blog :~)))

17 Nov, 2009

Beautiful photo's BB,you keep tugging at the old heart strings of us exiled tykes !! Still have fish, chips 'n' mushy peas on a Friday ! We were in Whitby last summer and just had to climb the steps to the church and abbey, makes you wonder where your legs went lol. You had some very atmospheric weather on your trip, makes for lovely pics :)
Bscott you sound like my sister, moved to Scotland with her husband but can't break the pangs of homesickness for Yorkshire :(

17 Nov, 2009

Never, NEVER, Aster!!!
BB .....Leeds, born, bred and buttered!

STILL in tears!

Lovely blog BB...what a beautiful place. The village is very picturesque....the views thru' & out to sea are stunning!
What did poor Jane get for her promised lunch then? A bag of chips on the harbour wall?!! LOL!!
3 cheers for mushy peas...I love 'em!!!

17 Nov, 2009

All Mushy Pea lovers apply to me for ultimate Yorkshire receipt!!!!!!!

BB, this was a FAB blog...in breaking my heart, you have made me realise that I am still alive!

( The golfballs, gone???? )

17 Nov, 2009

Wow....Bonkers.....What an amazing set of photo's. Thanks for the wander around Staithes too, it looks really lovely. Sorry poor Jane didnt get her Lobster though, you got off light there.........Lol Thanks for sharing you day out with us.......

17 Nov, 2009

Aw poor Bscott ! We did have some gorgeous fish and chips sitting by Arbroath harbour, though it was cold so probably made them taste better lol. Nothin wrong with that Fluff :))

17 Nov, 2009

Now, the Fish And Chip Supper ( why on earth do the Scots ( bless ) call it a 'Supper' no matter what time of day you buy it??? ) can be a reasonable experience in Scotland , BUT ( and truly, believe me, it pains me to say it ) it's not a patch on the fish and chips ( scraps, mushy peas and a breadcake, ta, and loads of rattle and squirt ) that you get in Yorkshire!

Or 'got'......PLEASE tell me, someone....ANYONE....that they're still the nectar-and-ambrosia I remember from the long-ago days when chips WERE chips ( 3d a bag ) and fish was haddock ( 6d or a 1/- 'special' )!

Deep-fried Mars Bar, anyone?

17 Nov, 2009

Wonderful scenery Bonkersbon and a lovely picturesque like you said your self, thank you for uploading and shareing such a pretty place and those lovely moors but I did nt realise Captain Hook came from Balamory lol hehe, no joking apart seriously, where you state the little fishing village with the water inlet going at the side of the houses, it reminds me of Boscastle. I make my own mushy peas taste far better soak with soda tablet, cook and add sugar.

17 Nov, 2009

Aw yum scrum Aster! We do that at Weymouth...they taste sooo much better outside! ;~))

17 Nov, 2009

Do you remember fish cakes Bscott ? Two thick slices of potato with a piece of fish fillet inside and coated in batter. Not all mushed up together in a little pat.
Oh yes,the free scraps mmm :) Sorry BB :0

17 Nov, 2009

Great blog as usual Bonkers. Brings fond memories of Whitby as a relative of mine lives there. Oh yes he's still there, not dead but undead! I visit him once in a while for a meal. You've never tasted real red wine like it.

17 Nov, 2009

They still sell them Aster had to bring some back for my x boyfriends mother as she came from Yorkshire too. My youngest daughter use to work part time in a fish and chips shop up in Bradford.

17 Nov, 2009

Mmm can feel another visit coming on :)

17 Nov, 2009

Does your relative have large canines Toto ? I second your sentiments on the RNLI BB and always pop in to buy bits n bobs from their stations when passing.

17 Nov, 2009

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS...Aster,,,the humble ( PROPER ) fish-cake!!!!! Exactly as you say ( sorry, BB, sorry....but we must regress....).

The other month ( idiot that I am ) I was in a so-called fish and chip shop up here ( sorry, Scotland, NOT your fault ) and I saw. on the menu board the legend 'Fish Cake'.....and being a fool, and sentimental, and homesick,I ordered one.)

Yuk, ick, spit.....it was NOT a fishcake...it was some noxious concoction of mush which went straight in the bin after one sad bite!

We lived in Holmfirth ( 'Last of the Summer Wine' country ) for 7 years, and our local fish and chip shops referred to scraps as 'crozzles'......ever come across that before, Aster? We never had.

SORRY, again, BB......it's still a great blog!

17 Nov, 2009

Never heard of crozzles ! Maybe fishcakes should be called Yorkshire fish cakes then we'd know what we were getting lol

17 Nov, 2009

Aw Bscott they still as good though sorry the price has moved on a bit ...no worries I didnt put this under a gardening blog so you chat away ..x

Yes they have removed those big round radar domes ..Leeds a great city always friendly except when parking ..is it Stoakies in Arbroath Fluff ?

Was never allowed to eat in the street Mother thought it would show us up .. yes we often offended those on our posh council estate ..

Bit of a stretch Morgana he actually worked in a grocers in Staithes .. wasnt till moving to Whitby that got a real taste for the sea but why spoil a good story with something as trivial as facts ..

17 Nov, 2009

Fair point, Aster!

Apologies, BB....you may rest assured that the Yorkshire Fish-Cake and Mushy Pea Obsessionals have now Left The Building.....for the present!

;-)

17 Nov, 2009

It might be Arbroath 'smokies' BB,they smoke herring I think, didn't try any though !

17 Nov, 2009

So you come from Huddersfield then Bscott you will know Castle hill then he he lovely area .

We all have to start some where in life and I think it makes it more interesting. Lovely story about him I would nt of known that so I find it interesting to know more of his back ground.

17 Nov, 2009

Yes some very beautiful, rugged scenery Ray. Nice blog and pics!

17 Nov, 2009

Pee ess....cossed int the post, BB.

If I send you my postal address, will you send me a fishcake and scraps in a well-sealed jiffy-bag????

Apparently the BEST fish and chips up this way are those from the ( Inver )Bervie Chipper......

17 Nov, 2009

Thats it thanks .. Aster .Sorry Toto just picked up your comment .. Marie will be very interested to hear that ..

OMG Bscott well they d be good whilst wrapped but in the post ? Surely with all those great fishing ports you must get some decent fish ?

17 Nov, 2009

Beautiful scenery. Sometimes it pays to stand and stare. We'd miss a lot if we didn't

17 Nov, 2009

Truly outnumbered on the mushy peas....but then I am a Southener who has migrated away.....Was moving to Yorkshire once but Hubby's job changed their mind on that one so never made it. Who knows, I may have developed a liking for them had I lived there.....!

17 Nov, 2009

Fish cake reciepe for Bscot http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/517551

17 Nov, 2009

Thanks Hywel ..only outnumbered Pg cos they so good ...the same as serving roast beef without yorkshire puddings never known anyone try it but sure theres a bylaw somewhere that would insist on a public flogging at the very least ..

17 Nov, 2009

What can I say, Bb? Such lovely photos. You live in a very beautiful area. Thanks for sharing it with us! :-))))) xx

17 Nov, 2009

Interesting that you should mention a deep fried mars bar Bscot. I was told that it was 'invented' in Inverbervie, near Aberdeen. However a fish and chip shop in Stonehaven claims it was the first with this delight. I'll stick with mushy peas.

17 Nov, 2009

Thanks Spritz ..very lucky the sea very important to us and love the way the coast changes from here down to chalk cliffs ..always found it hard to comprehend our climate change over millions of years and how dinosaurs strolled here but a walk along this coast brings all that to life.

17 Nov, 2009

Lovely blog like being on holiday are mushy peas like processed which I used to love as a child.

18 Nov, 2009

Ooer...well, it's now 3.30 in the morning ( oh dear ) and what's a girl to do, except wait for 5.30 ( work ) and scoot around GoY!

BB, yes, there are some great fish landed here, but it's what they DO with it that disappoints. There ARE some good fish and chip shops but...but...ah well, never mind....nostalgia's not what it used to be!

Morgana...thanks for the fishcake receipts, will have a look-see....oooo! Brian Turner! I've watched it, now THAT'S a proper fishcake!!!

Ginellie....yep, Inverbervie v. Stonehaven re. the deep fried Mars Bar. Nope, I've certainly not tried one ( they do deep fried Bounty Bars as well....disgusting...no wonder Scotland's the heart attack capital of Europe! )..like you, I'll stick with the home made mushy peas!

Denise....no, processed peas are different ( they've been processed! ). Mushy peas ( the tinned ones are horrible, don't even bother! ) are made by soaking the dried peas overnight with a bicarb. tablet, then rinsing lots and lots in cold water the next day and bringing to the boil, simmering for an hour or however long it takes for them to 'mush', adding salt and sugar, and a knob of butter, when they're done. Magic! Apparently they're quite 'the thing' in some of the posher London restaurants nowadays ( bet they cost a wee bit more, though...and they won't be as good by the time chef has finished mucking about with his little additions! )

I'm going, now....3.40 a.m., almost time for breakfast!

;-)

18 Nov, 2009

18 Nov, 2009

What a wonderful Place think i pack my own lunch/Dinner if we ever visit mind :)

18 Nov, 2009

Hi Bonkers, that was a real treat mate - thanks. Got my mouth watering thinking about the fish and chips at The Magpie in Whitby - well worth getting in the queue ! I've spent one week in June for the past 14 years staying in the Levisham/Newtondale area and I love it. One of my favourite places is Helmsley Walled Garden - do you ever go there ? - magical (and the homemade cakes mmmmnnnnn). North Yorkshire is a truly wonderful place.

18 Nov, 2009

Oh you are awful its soup and ryvita for my lunch!

18 Nov, 2009

18 Nov, 2009

great blog ray/jane, lovely scenery there, bet it a bit bleak in bad winter storms so close to water, but beautifull, dont care what anyone says think we in the north have the best villages and countryside, like stepping back in time :o))

18 Nov, 2009

Thanks Jacque ..sounds a bit pricey but huge portions so much cheaper if you share ..the more the merrier ..

Thats a lovely spot you got to MW along North York Moors Railway line ..theres no road to Newtondale as I recall so its this or walking .

Dunscombe Park is a great spot at Helmsley and those beautiful ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. You must know the area well .

Thanks Mavis ..is it pease pudding for you ?

Hi PP yes agree Robin Hoods Bay feels more commercial Staithes still very much a working village .Jane very jealous you managed to eat there ..

Thanks Clarice ..bet you make a great hotpot .

Yes Sandra roads can be closed by snow drifts and in the 1970s a breakwater was added around the harbour as the sea would pound directly on to the houses.Agree Sandra many think its freezing here and of course can get raw at times but on a nice day its beautiful and in winter you can walk for miles and hardly see a soul ..

Sorry Bscott cant find Morganas fishcakes .. someone eaten them all ?

18 Nov, 2009

Your welcome Bscott, I knew which ones as my daughter use to work in a chippy in Yorshire lol.

18 Nov, 2009

20 Nov, 2009

We did the same journey last year but without camera. So nice to see it all again. AND we do like mushy peas and we are southerners!

20 Nov, 2009

Hello BB, Black country folk love mushy peas and faggots, and while I`m on the subject I think it was Sue who refered to me as a YAM< YAM,, for which I forgive her. Coming from Halesowen in the Black Country were actually refered to as "Tata (as in Potato) Bellies". Going back to your travels the photos are great as is the info. As you say we have unsung heroes in the volunteers who risk their lives at all times during the year, and it makes me made when the lottery fund was refused to the lifeboat men on the grounds that the number of lives saved was small.

21 Nov, 2009

I'm with you on that one Stroller. They make some crazy decisions don't they ? Thank you for forgiving me ! So sorry, but I didn't realise that different parts of the Black Country have different 'names' ! From now on I shall address you by your proper one ... Tata Belly. Lol :~)))

21 Nov, 2009

Lol Sue you do make me laugh

21 Nov, 2009

My husband's got this thing about 'faggot and pea batches'......he's from Cov.

21 Nov, 2009

Hi BB Lovely photos and Blog Thanks !

23 Nov, 2009

Excellent blog BB and as usual outstanding photographs, I have never been to this part of the country.....perhaps one of these days.
As for southerners not liking MUSHY peas, myth I can assure you, used to live in the West Midlands and faggots and mushy peas (homemade ones as well) were a treat.

25 Nov, 2009

Thanks Sueb ..

Aye DD but bet you cant buy them with your fish and chips ..think each area has its own pockets of beauty even the most industrial of areas .

This area ony a few miles from Middlesborough but is it what most people think of near Teeside ?

25 Nov, 2009

We have them here in the south with our fish and chips very popular in our local chippie.

27 Nov, 2009

Fantastic views and such a picturesque fishing village. :o)

Sandra x

30 Nov, 2009

Really DD? Amazing never seen them on my visits south anyone else get mushy peas in the South ?

Thanks Sandra some lovely spots in Berks think most counties have gems although we re spoilt as North Yorkshire so big ..our biggest county I think.

30 Nov, 2009

Lovely poem and photos: thanks for great photos of your corner outside of time. Is there a tidal river there that was out at that time? Always wondered who Banksii was, so thanks for the lead on Joseph.
Is this why sentimental folks are called "mushy"?!

4 Dec, 2009

Thanks Orgratis , the river is one of many small streams that flow off the moors from the River Esk which joins the sea at Whitby. So too small to be tidal , although tide out from sea cliffs too steep to wash tidal water upstream.

In the 1970s sea defences were added as waves would crash directly onto houses and some were washed away.

Yes think so as mushy means soft and we certainly sentimental about our peas - think it would cause an outcry to serve fish and chips without them here. Would be like your Turkey without cranberry sauce ?

5 Dec, 2009

Or your beef without Yorkshire puddings ! :~))

5 Dec, 2009

Or a tall glass without Pimms Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha :~)

5 Dec, 2009

Going American posh now ...... ??? lol ;~)))

5 Dec, 2009

5 Dec, 2009

I've said it before and I'll say it again - it's a real education logging on to this site ! Thankyou Sue Lol ;~))
