Nice Surprise

I noticed these tiny white flowers on my pond today, so exciting, never seen them before so naturally I googled.

They’re from my elodea canadensis which I’ve had for years, but never seen any flowers before, never knew they flowered.

The next pic is of my house leek flowers. I bought them from a specialist grower on line . Again, very excited to see flowers emerging ….. not so excited now though. Is it me? I wish they’d never bothered lol. What do you think?

Need a little beauty now. This is Fire and Ice, notice how there’s not one slug bite, it’s raised and touches no other plant. It’s neighbour has made many a slug happy:-)

Hot isn’t it, got hose out yesterday evening, watered everything, everywhere. One am this morning ….massive storm, went on for ever…. typical!:-) Not watering today. Suppose I may water pots and baskets… :-)

That's interesting I have seen that small white flower in large pods on estates visited in the past but never associated it with Elodea. Hosta is lovely

Thanks Bjs, I risked life and limb to see what they were attached to, amazing:-)

Well that is a surprise for you and very nice too, I have seen it whilst visiting some grand old places but never in our smaller ponds, as to the houseleeks I have many in my collection, I never think the flowers are anything spectacular, in truth some are downright ugly Ba.. I have tried everything this year as regards my hostas, yours is beautiful, at first I thought I was successful but soon as we did get some rain they got munched, I'm drenching the ones in my stumpery with garlic solution, ones in my pots I've refreshed the slug gone wool pellets but they are at the front of my house, cannot use that anywhere in the back garden as the dogs will go mad to get at it...

Never seen these pond flowers before, you must have the magic touch. I must admit I`m not an admirer of the house leek flowers much prefer them in the rosette form.
My hostas have all been munched some worse than others but to be honest other than offering a few slug pellets its just been a case of them getting on with it, now looking at yours I wish I had made more effort.

Agree with Stroller about the house leek flowers, but what a beautiful Hosta!

Thanks all, Most of my hostas are not too badly munched, but I have frogs and newts and they must earn their keep. None without a nibble though bar this one:-)

Gosh, I have never expected elodea canadensis to flower, what a lovely surprise .... I shall be watching mine more closely now. Do you thin yours annually, I wonder if that gives it too much to regenerate to have the inclination to flower? What a beautiful hosta too, I love it. Mine are in a pot circled with copper tape, so far this year the slugs have found it easier to make their way into the kitchen than into that pot :-) Like you I am not a fan of the house leeks' flowers but love their neat rosettes, although I am content that they are happy enough to make the effort. Yours look superb in that pot.

Pretty flowers bornagain! Like their sporadic sprouting too! I've a small fish pond, one lily plant..it has 2 flowers and a bud ready to open.

Ps. I've quite a few house leeks. Flowers are ok..depends on the variety I think.
Pics all look nice!

Thanks Xela, I do nothing with the elodea, just like it to spread. I don't worry about duckweed or blanket weed, they haven't been a problem lately and I have read they're good for wild life too:-)

Hi Kate, beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder with house leek flowers:-)

I see that you have Lemnoideae ( duckweed) in your pond. This plant has the smallest flower and the smallest fruit in the plant kingdom. By comparison the little white flowers seen are gargantuan in size to the duckweed’s 3mm flower.

Yes Loosestrife, strangely though there is much less duckweed than last year and the blanket weed seems to have almost vanished without any interference from me. Don't think I would have noticed the duckweed flowers:-)

I have just done my weekly skim of our pond for duckweed and debris that has drifted in there ( the odd bird feather and one or two dog toys as well as errant leaves from the rest of the garden ) and agree, definitely less duckweed than in previous years and I haven't needed to twizzle a stick for blanket weed either. Is this down to global warming too or much munching by the goldfish I wonder?

Could be any of the above, but I haven't any fish in mine, just frogs and newts:-)
