14 Loch Broom Day Out

Loch Broom
Tuesday was Moongrowers birthday so we took a day out to Loch Broom on the west coast of Scotland. After visiting a private garden by Ullapool we went into the village for coffee and a cake and a look round the harbour.
A couple of miles to the east of Ullapool is Lechmelm Garden. This is a 12 acre arboretum that was laid out in the 1870’s then allowed to go to waste in the mid 1900’s before being restored by the current owners. It is now open to the public from April to September. Whilst the gardens contain a range of trees and shrubs it is the Rhododendrons that appeal at this time of year.
A grouping of Rhodoendron, Peiris and Berberis is typical of the garden
Rhododendron orbicular
The garden is densly planted and distant views are difficult to find.
Rhododendron loderi ‘King George’ is a fine specimen
Look at the size of the blooms on ‘King George’!
Rhododendron oreotrephes is a fine example of one of the larger rhodos

It has been a hard day so far and we still have the Corrieshalloch Gorge to walk round, so I thought a rest would come in useful.

Goodness, that takes me back. I've been to that very harbour - about 20 years ago, whilst visiting Scotland for the first time. Lovely photographs.

I am pleased that this brings back memories for some of you. Let me see, 20 years ago - the road from Inverness would possibly still have been mostly single track and it would have taken us about three hours to get to Ullapool rather than the hour and a half that it does now. Herring fishing would have still been good and so the Eastern European 'Klondikers' (fish factory ships) would be anchored in Loch Broom. Mackerel would have been a by-catch that no one wanted so the fishermen would give you as many as you wanted for free - we took a carrier bag down to the pier with us. Times change.

It was a really lovely pressie for both of us... and talking to a friend last night we discovered we know the person who worked on renovating the garden in the 1980s. Looking forward to seeing him again and asking lots of questions.
