16 Bird Feeders

Whilst many people have now stopped their winter feeding of birds we continue into the summer so that the parents have food for themselves and their babies. This serves also us well because the feeders are outside the sitting room window. One of the feeders is a wire cage that holds ball of fat ( I was told off on another Forum for phrasing that differently, lol). Yesterday a Great Spotted Woodpecker found the feeder and has since been visiting regularly. Today we have a starling feeding a baby cuckoo. The cuckoo is sitting on a branch about six feet from the feeder and the starling is darting backwards and forwards being very busy. The balls of fat are disappearing rapidly but the entertainment value is worth the 50-60 pence a day that it costs.

Hee hee i too put ' balls of fat' out for the birds and the starlings make me laugh trying to hang on to the feeder that they are in, how great to see a cuckoo! never seen one in the wild, they get huge too don't they?

Sewingkilla the cuckoo was already bigger than the poor starling - which looked totally frazzled as it dashed back and forth between the feeder and the lazy lump. Then it suddenly flew off and left the greedy object which also flew away after a few minutes. We will try to get a pix of woody but with the double glazing are not likely to be successful... now he is a beauty

The feeder I have (and yes I'm continuing to feed the birds also) has openings for eight birds and at times all the spots are taken and there are several birds nearby waiting their turn. It's fun to watch them, especially when they are flirting with each other.lol

I am always amazed at the number of folk who feed the birds in winter and then, at the time when they are feeding babies, cut off supplies...

I feed the birds all through the year, to encourage them in to my garden they eat aphids, they wont get rid of all your aphids Blue Jays, Sparrows, Black Bird, Wrens, they feed on cutworm. Plant garlic next to a rose tree, bush and that prevents greenfly. Ants incourage aphids.

I,m feeding still and love to watch the birds, its amazing how many get used to us being in the garden and come to ignore us. I purchased my food when Bobg put the info on Goy a few weeks ago and the birds love it..........Morgana thanks for tip on garlic....

I feed summer also...but I have to limit to the weekends when I'm home. Gilli's flying pigs have came my way and I had to fill the feeders twice this weekend. Saturday they emptied in 8 hours. On Sunday they emptied in 5 hours.(I'm sure it's due to feeding babies)

I am pleased that so many of us are still feeding the birds. Ours are consuming three or four fat balls a day plus peanuts.

I ordered myself a new bird table off t'internet last night. Mine, although a lovely design, is really old and tatty.
New one has a solar light in the top, cages (if needed) a water tray, some hanging things for seeds and nuts and a planter at the bottom too. Not only will it look better in the garden but the birds'll think they've got an early chrissy pressie. :o)

Enjoyed all the stories about visiting birds. I too have to go into garden first thing to make sure our fish and birds are catered for. We don't get many birds because we are 'home' to about 6 cats ( Not ours, they belong to flats next door who only have paving so come to use our garden as toilet!) I do like cats but wish they would find somewhere else to go as I am so afraid for the ground feeders. Their favourite food (birds not cats) apart from the suet food is raisins. I feel sure they would come and knock hard on door if they could. I also get through a large quantity of fat balls. Sue

When we first moved in back in September, the birds were the first ones to welcome us with their song and antics. I immediately put up feeders and have enjoyed many hours since watching the crazy ways of the sparrows, starlings, finches, crows, wing collared doves, magpies, tits, dunnock....oh, and the 3 squirrels that visit the squirrel feeder I put on the garage!
We are trying to encourage more wildlife to the garden and I intend to pop a smallish pond behind the greenhouse in a week or so. Photo's to follow.
I stopped putting the 'balls de la fat' out but you've made me think now Bulbaholic....

One day last week I counted 15 sparrows on two of our bird feeders. The RSPB and other bodies tell us that there is a decline in the number of house sparrows - not in our garden I'm glad to say :-)

Same here MG. We also had a pair mated and had babies up in our guttering/roof a few weeks ago.
We get similar numbers on our feeders, when the crows aren't lurking, and they're funny little things to watch when they squabble over the seeds!!
Just keep doing our bit, eh MG!

We actually stopped feeding fat balls at the time we went on holiday but bought an extra peanut feeder. These now attract just the occaisional blue tit or siskin but, as Mg says, a huge number of house sparrows.
When I was a kid we used to think of spuggies as being common but it seems that they are now to be treasured.

Yes, good idea to continue providing food for the birds in the garden. At my back garden feeders, I'm currently enjoying watching adult sparrows feeding fledgling sparrows.
The fat and the balls seem much appreciated. ;o)
